The Vampire King's Possession -
Chapter 146. Finding a Physician
Chapter 146: 146. Finding a Physician
Soft footsteps and whispering could be heard but the sounds were too low for Damon to understand the words. The door opened and the old woman’s voice said, "Go in then." She sounded scared.
"I-I can’t," a male voice said, he sounded even more scared. "You said vampires are in there. Why did you let them in the inn in the first place?"
"Shush, it’s too late to ask questions now."
"Don’t push me," he cried as he tumbled forward. He grabbed onto the wall to avoid rolling down the stairs.
Damon stood to his feet and walked closer. He stood at the foot of the stairs and looked up. He frowned, if this was the physician he was very young.
"Are you the physician?" He asked immediately.
"No, I am not a..."
"Shush!" The old woman yelled. "He is, he just says that to avoid working in the Lord’s house but he is the one we all go to treat whatever problems and his treatment have never failed us. You can ask around." She said with a nasty smile.
Damon peered at the young man and he looked away. "What’s your name?"
"Jean," he said and touched the bridge of his nose which has gone red for some reason.
"Come closer," Damon said.
"I-I am not sure that is a good idea."
He was still speaking when Damon appeared in front of him and Jean looked like he was about to pass out. He brought his hands closer to his chest and closed his eyes.
"The patient was badly wounded by a paler..."
Jean’s eyes flew open and held his hand to his mouth as a loud gasp escaped. He shook his head vigorously. "That’s bad."
"Some treatment has been administered," Damon continued, ignoring his reaction. "However, no herbs were used and the patient is in severe pain. We don’t have anything for the pain.
At the end of his words, Jean looked absolutely horrified. "W-what kind of treatment was used?"
"I don’t know," Damon said with a bent head.
Damon didn’t have a clue, he didn’t even know how badly she was injured. All he just told the physician was the exact words Lord Kieran had told him. He didn’t know more than that.
"How long ago was the patient injured?"
"Almost twenty hours ago," Damon said. At least, he knew this much. He could remember when her scream resounded in the forest.
Jean mumbled an inaudible word under his breath. "Was the patient bitten?" He asked.
Damon shook his head, "I don’t think so."
"Where is the patient now?" He asked.
"The Vampire Regions," Damon said with a blank expression and watched all the newly acquired color immediately fade from the physician’s face.
Jean shook his head vehemently. "I don’t think I am the right physician for this. You can try the next town."
"You don’t get a say," Damon said stiffly. "We leave by sunset. Get whatever you need ready. If you need to buy anything, let me know."
"No, no, no! There is no way I can travel to the Vampire Region."
Damon frowned, "If you are worried about your safety. I can guarantee that no harm will come to you."
"That’s not the only thing I am worried about. There is no way I can follow two strange vampires."
"You will be paid handsomely for your services. If you treat her properly, I am sure our king will reward you."
Jean froze and Damon could literally see the wheels in his head turn. Jean’s face lit up like a candle when he figured it out.
"The princess?" He asked with horror.
Damon squinted his eyes. For a supposedly good physician, Jean was surprisingly slow.
"Surely, the physicians at the Royal Castle will be of better help and moreover the Lord of this town has physicians who had schooled under the best physicians and know all the knowledge about herbal medicine."
"So do you, Jean! Stop selling yourself short." The old woman stepped forward. "Irrespective of what he looks like, he does have some Aristocrat blood in him." She said with pride. "He only fell this low because he decided to marry my beautiful granddaughter and um how much exactly would he be paid?"
"Bertha!" Jean yelled. "Does everything have to be about money with you?"
"This will help you, I don’t know if Anna has told you but..." Bertha paused and looked around, Bringing her voice down a few notches she said, "She is with child. I know how you feel about living in the inn while raising your child."
Jean went rigid and twisted his fingers, "Why didn’t she tell me?"
Damon frowned as he listened, he didn’t think the young woman who came was pregnant. Unless the fetus was still too young to have its own heartbeat.
"You know why and don’t tell her I told you, she would be angry with me." Her heart was beating a little too fast as spoke.
Damon didn’t care for this, he was only letting this discussion happen because he still had at least two hours before sunset. He couldn’t move from this place until then.
"How long do I have to stay in the Vampire Region?" He asked.
Damon studied his face, "Not long." He lied. He knew unless she was completely healed, the King wasn’t going to let Jean go.
He prayed for both their sakes that Jean knew what to do or it will be both their heads on a plate. He could try the Lord’s house but he knew unless he wanted to break in, he probably won’t be allowed through the gates.
"Okay, but I’d like to be paid something before I venture on this trip with you."
"No," Damon said without blinking. "You are coming with me whether you like it or not. You’ll only be paid after you’ve done your part."
"But..." Bertha started to say.
"Bertha," he said slowly. "You are most certain he can treat the princess."
She nodded, vigorously.
He smirked and showed her the emerald. Her face lightened up and he put it in his pocket. "He will return with it and more of course."
