The Vampire King's Possession
Chapter 143. Greedy

Chapter 143: 143. Greedy

It has been thirty minutes, Damon heard a loud voice say between his nap. He slowly raised his head up and stood to his feet. "Shall we?" He said and took off.

He kept his eyes peeled and his ears to the ground as they stepped into the Nolands. He could feel that he wasn’t the only agitated. He couldn’t blame them. A night like this has probably never been imagined.

The moon shone brightly in the sky as Damon raced through the drylands. It was always ironic how No lands was in the middle of prosperous lands, yet it was this dry. It was almost as if it was cursed.

Damon heard an unusual sound but he didn’t slow down. Whatever it was, he intended to outrun it. He didn’t have any time to fight. Mauve life depended on him and this was a task the King had entrusted him with, he intended to do it properly.

Damon concluded that the sound was a product of his imagination as nothing came out of it and they got to the bother of Nolands without incident. The first thing they were greeted with was wildflowers. One couldn’t see that in the Nolands.

"I think, it’s best you three stay here," Damon said as they crossed into human territory. "You can hide in the nearby cave in the day."

"Why?" One of them complained.

Damon sighed, he hated that he had to explain something like this. "Five vampires strutting into the human territory without prior warning would be sure to give them ideas. Besides, they don’t take kindly to us and we are not trying to frighten them."

"Okay," the guard said, "But we expect to be here nightfall."

Damon shrugged and started walking away as Zane followed behind him. They walked further into the human territory until dawn.

"We have to find a place to lodge, the sun will be out soon."

That wasn’t the only reason, once more human come out to start their day, it will be unbearable to walk around with either condemning stares or frightened stares. None of them them bothered him but he Zane had experienced it.

"Good," Zane replied.

Damon saw and inn and approached it. He pushed open the short doors and short old woman appeared in his view. She peered at him with bad eyesight and a scrunched up nose.

"Vampires," she whispered. "What do you want?" She asked darkly.

"A dark room," Damon said without hesitation.

"Five gold coins," she said and stretched out her hand squinting at him.

Damon blinked, he knew a room shouldn’t even cost a silver coin, yet she wanted five gold coins from him. "That’s too much." He said.

"If you don’t like my services, you can go. If I am going to let the devils into my inn, I might as well get my money’s worth. You can always look elsewhere," she said with a smirk.

Zane glared down at the woman condescendingly but he didn’t say or do anything.

Damon put his hand in his pocket and brought out a handful of gold coins. The woman’s eyes gleamed as she accepted.

"It wasn’t a myth. One, two..." she counted under her breath. She smirked and looked up at them after she was done with her counting. "This will get you lodging and meals".

"Come with me," she said and led them behind the counter.

A dark path appeared and she picked the lamp that hung on the wall. At the end of the path was a door. She stood to the side and gestured for them to go in.

"This is a cellar," Damon said with an unimpressed look in his eyes.

"You said you wanted a dark room. There is no room darker than this one," she said mischievously.

"I need to send a letter to the castle." He said and stared hard at her.

"I am an innkeeper, not a mailboy," she said with a sneer.

"You’ll be paid handsomely," Damon responded.

Her face immediately brightened up, "I am sure I can find someone who can deliver your letter."

"Not by post," Damon said. "I need a response today."

The woman blinked, "The Castle is miles away. The only one person with a carrier pigeon that is linked with the castle is the merchant and he only attends to aristocrats." The woman cried.

"I am sure he can make an exception," Damon said and pulled out another handle of coins. "This is merely half."

"This isn’t nearly enough to pay for the carrier pigeon, let alone to bribe the merchant!"

Damon tried to not let his disgust show on his face. With every conversation, she was getting greedier. He wasn’t complaining, the greedy ones were easy to handle.

"Hmm, I guess I will try to take my business elsewhere." He mumbled and made to take the coins away from her.

She immediately moved her hand away, "You said this is half, right?"

Damon nodded.

"Give me half of the other half and I’ll guarantee that you’ll get your letter sent." Her brown teeth stuck out weirdly as she tried to negotiate with you.

"Of course," he smiled and pulled out more coins.

She chuckled and accepted it. "You will get your response."

"I don’t need to tell you that if you don’t, you will regret it."

"Of course, of course, I am not one to go against business partners."

Damon tried not to cringe at the word. He put his hand to his pocket and pulled out the letter. He warily eyed the woman and on a second thought pulled out an emerald.

"If I get a response, I’ll give you this gem."

Damon thought the woman’s eyes would pop in front of him. "Of course, of course. The letter!" She yelled in a mechanic voice.

He handed it to her and she zoomed out of his sight. He could not comprehend how a woman her age had that energy.

"Was that a good idea?" Zane asked with a haughty expression on his face.
