The Vampire King's Possession
Chapter 144. The Response

Chapter 144: 144. The Response

"Was that a good idea?" Zane asked with a haughty expression on his face.

Damon shrugged, a good idea or not, he was going to get the letter sent. Considering the sun was out he needed someone else to move around in his stead.

Greedy humans were much easier to handle than the self-righteous ones. The ones who felt they were nothing but the spawn of the devil and shouldn’t roam around them.

He didn’t care for the lot of them and he could send them to meet their maker faster than they could say his name but there was the fact that he couldn’t use force because of the alliance.

Therefore, he avoided situations that would provoke him. Alone, humans were scaredy cats but as soon as they were in a group, they tended to act like they could take him on.

It was annoying to be dragged into a mess like that. He missed when they were properly feared and when he stepped into their territories humans fled at the sight of him.

The greedy ones, however, didn’t care for anything else. It was amusing to see their greed surpass their fears but whenever he ran into such, they always made his job easier.

"Was that a good idea?" Zane repeated when he didn’t respond.

Damon shrugged again, "Does it matter?" He asked. "As long as she gets it done, it doesn’t really matter how much I have to pay."

Mauve’s life was on the line and she was important to the King. Just because she was human didn’t mean he shouldn’t do his best.

Damon took a step forward and walked through the door. The smell of the cellar hit him and he flinched. It smelled like dirt, dampness, and a dead animal.

"Ugh!" Zane yelled. "This is nasty!"

Damon didn’t respond, he just took the stairs down. The space was cleaner than it smelt. The things stored in it were actually more organized than he expected.

"You really don’t expect us to spend the entire day here," Zane whined.

"You might want to get comfortable," Damon said and sat on the ground. He rested his back against the wall and bent his head.

"You are serious?" Zane sounded horrified.

Damon peeked an eye open, he was starting to get annoyed. If Zane was going to whine throughout, he didn’t have to tag along.

"You get a room if you want but don’t whine when you wake up with severe sunburns."

Zane scoffed and sat across from him. "It smells like I will get something worse in here."

Damon closed his eyes and bent his head again. By sunset, he would have to set off for the palace. He might make it before sunrise if he ran as fast as he could.

He doubted that, he hoped the King would send out the physician as soon as he read the letter that way he wouldn’t have to travel that far out.

Damon scrunched up his face and forced himself to clear his mind. He needed to get some rest, his body was tired and he still had a lot of work to do.

Damon shook as he heard the soft sound of a knock and then the door was thrown open. He stood to his feet even before his brain comprehended what was happening.

He looked up the stairs to see who it was as Zane blended into the darkness. It was a young woman holding a tray. She was taking the stairs a little too slowly and Damon wondered how she could see in the dark but with the way she struggled, he doubted she could see very well.

"What do you want?" He asked sternly.

"Ahhh!" She screamed and he could see her entire body shake. He was surprised she didn’t throw the food down at him.

"My-my grandmother said- said to bring you lunch." She froze at the top of the stairs blinking rapidly. Damon could tell she was trying to spot him.

He rushed up the stairs and took the tray from her. She gasped as she realized he was that close. The food smelt like porridge.

"You can leave," he ordered when she didn’t rush out.

She immediately snapped out of it and took a step back but she didn’t leave. Damon frowned as he watched her fight to say what she needed to say. The smell of fear was overwhelming.

"She- she said the- the letter- letter has been sent- sent and you should get- get a response soon."

As soon as the words left her lips, she fled and closed the door with a loud bang behind her. Damon turned around and walked back down. He placed the tray on the floor.

"Don’t tell me you plan to eat it!" Zane scolded.

"You don’t have to join me."

"Aren’t you worried it might be poisoned?"

Damon shrugged, "The worst that would give me is an upset stomach."

Zane didn’t eat and Damon finished the two bowls before he returned to sleep. He wasn’t sure he would be able to eat after sunset so he might as well do it now.

Damon heard loud footsteps stomping outside the door which was immediately followed by loud banging. The door opened and the old woman appeared holding a lamp.

"Your letter is here!" She announced, waving an envelope.

The words were barely out of her lips when Damon appeared in front of her. She screamed and fell backward, landing on her rear. Damon didn’t even care about her fall, he just pulled the envelope from her grasp.

"Not before the rest of the pay!" She screamed.

He put his arm in his pocket and tossed everything at her. She got to her feet and scrambled to catch them before they fell through the holes in the stairs.

Damon ripped the envelope open as he walked down the stairs. He pulled out the letter and flipped the seal off. All the color drained from his already pale face as he read the contents. He blinked rapidly as his eyes scanned through, disbelief was the only reason he kept reading.
