The Vampire King's Possession -
Chapter 142. Disoriented
Chapter 142: 142. Disoriented
Jael opened the door to see Mill standing outside. She had her hand to her chest and worried expression on her face.
"Sire!" She cried as soon as she saw him. Danag stood next to her. "I heard what happened." She looked on the verge of tears.
She must have followed Danag, Jael had not even thought to ask for her. It was a good thing that she was here.
"Mill," he said softly. He didn’t have anything else to say to her.
"I am sure she will be fine. Mauve is stronger than she looks."
"Join us for the second meal," he said instead.
"Thank you, Sire but I don’t think I have any appetite."
"I see," he said. He should probably thank her for coming but he didn’t.
"I brought your clothes," Danag mumbled.
"Drop them in the room." He ordered and started to walk away.
"Yes, Sire." Danag said with a bow and Mill repeated his action.
He stopped suddenly and turn around. "On a second thought, give me a shirt. This feels like a chain wrapped around my torso."
"Yes, Sire." Danag said and he rummage through the bag. He pulled out a silk shirt and Jael squinted his eyes.
He took off the old shirt and handed it to Danag. He took the new on and put it on but not before seeing the horrified look on Mill’s face. She must have seen the bandage.
He walked away as soon as the dress was over his head. Now, that he thought about it. He couldn’t remember the last time he had gotten this beaten up. It was at least half a century ago, Mill wasn’t even born then and it was a certain vampire’s fault.
He walked down the path and unconsciously slowed when he got to the room Mauve was in. The door suddenly flew open and Kieran appeared.
"Your Grace!" He called, he sounded genuinely shocked.
"How is she?" He asked robotically.
"Same old. Are you going for the second meal?"
Jael nodded without saying anything. It wasn’t that he was hungry, he just didn’t like the idea of having to stay in that room with his thoughts. He started walking and Kieran followed after him.
"Me too."
"Sire, My Lord." Walter said as soon as they walked into the dining room.
Jael blinked at the old vampire, it’s been over thirty decades since he last saw him. "Walter," he said.
"Sire," he bent lower. "I am so happy you have graced us with your presence after so many years, I wish there were terrible circumstances tied to it."
Jael shrugged, "I apologize for not visiting as often as I used to. It must have been lonely here."
"It wasn’t so bad, Lord Kieran kept me company unlike a certain master. Please, my Lords have a seat. Don’t let a servant like me keep you standing."
Jael walked toward the table without hesitation, he sat down and his food was immediately served. Only he and Kieran sat at the table. Jael ignored this.
The sight of the food, made his stomach twist but he forced himself to try to eat. He did need the nutrients. The second meal was sad and gloomy and neither of them tried to make the atmosphere any better.
Now that Kieran was seated, he could see how tired the vampire really was. He had bags under his eyes and his eyes looked more deathly that normal. For a second Jael wondered if his eyes looked the same way. They did feel heavy even though he wasn’t feeling sleepy.
"Any progress?" Jael suddenly asked.
"I don’t think this is the sort of conversation you have over meals."
"I think I can stomach anything at this point." He said and mechanically brought a spoon to his lips.
"No, that’s why I can’t believe you were attacked by two Palers. We haven’t been able to find one around these paths."
"Is that so?" Jael said absentmindedly.
"Sire," Kieran called with a horrified expression on his face. "I don’t think that’s a good idea."
"Whatever do you mean?" Jael turned to look at Kieran with feigned confusion.
"You don’t have to hunt for Palers yourself."
Jael frowned, "Why not?" He asked.
"Danag and the guards are more than enough for that." Kieran said with a low tone.
"I see," Jael said and resumed eating.
Kieran stared at him oddly but he kept mum.
Jael pushed his plate away and stood up from the table.
"Where to, Sire?" Kieran suddenly asked.
Jael slowly turned around to look at him. "Nowhere important. I’d like to get some air outside the castle."
Kieran could only nod, he couldn’t exactly say Jael couldn’t go. With how gloomy he looked, it would be best if he did step outside.
He had known from the moment he saw her at the rooftop that she was important to Jael but he had underestimated just how much.
He has known Jael for most part of his life and this was the second time he had seen Jael this disoriented. The first time was after his parents’ death.
The guards opened the door and let Jael out of the dining while Kieran finished the rest of his food. He was exhausted physically and could use some shut eye.
Finding a Paler was more of a hassle that he thought, he still couldn’t believe they had been attacked by Palers simultaneously. There was no record of them banding up to attack and he has read every book there was to read about it.
Kieran stood to his feet as he ended his meal and made his way out of the castle. "Where did his grace head to?" He asked the guard.
"Out the front door," he said.
Kieran walked out of the building and felt cold, he knew Jael wasn’t anywhere in the estate. He shouldn’t have let him go but he didn’t think Jael would do something so stupid.
"Danag!" He yelled as he walked into the house.
The color drained from his face when he saw the servant. Jael did go out to hunt, alone.
