Chapter 101. Something’s Not Right

Chapter 101: 101. Something’s Not Right

Jael held her closer as they spoke, his forehead etched with worry. He doubted she was aware of it, her voice sounded fine but occasionally, she would shiver and he knew it wasn’t because she was cold.

This was his fault, if he hadn’t left the castle he would have known as soon as Seraphino stepped onto this floor, he wouldn’t have had a chance to walk into her room let alone put his hands on her.

He wanted to rip the maniac’s jaw out, his fangs weren’t nearly enough. He couldn’t help but think about what would have happened if he had been a minute late.

"What are you thinking about?" Her voice broke through his thoughts.

"Nothing specifically," he replied and ran his fingers through her hair

"You went quiet," she mumbled.

"I’d rather listen to you talk."

She buried her face in my side, "I don’t have anything else to say."

He wished she had a proper reaction that would have been easier to deal with than this. He could recall how terrified she had been when he pulled her to himself.

"How do you feel?" He asked.

"I am fine," she repeated.

"Does your hand hurt?"

She shakes her head, "No."

"Not even a little?"

"It does sting a little, nothing significant."

Leaving her alone wouldn’t be ideal, he had known immediately. That’s why he had canceled out on joining them for the second meal but he couldn’t stay with her for too long.

Two soft knocks drew his attention to the door. She stiffened instantly and her heartbeat spiked.

"It’s Mill," he said and she immediately relaxed.

"How do you know?" She asked, raising her head to look at him. Her voice sounded normal, if he hadn’t gotten the slight smell of fear, he would have believed she was alright.

"I can tell. Come in," he called out.

"That doesn’t say anything." She muttered.

"Sire," Mill called as she walked in. She bowed slightly before she approached the bed. "I was told you would have your second meal here."

"Yes, Mill."

"Is Mauve, alright?" Her voice sounded worried.

"Yeah, I am. It’s just a scratch."

Mill frowned, "I am glad you aren’t hurt..." She looked as if she was about to say more but immediately ceased her words as she saw Jael’s face.

"Get me, Erick," he ordered.

"Yes, Sire. Is there anything specific you would like to eat?"

"No," Jael said stiffly. "Mauve?"

She shook her head, "I am fine."

Jael winced at the phrase. He could tell she was not, not with the way her body shook occasionally and how she clung to him.

"Alright," Mill bowed and left the room.

"You don’t have to skip eating with your guests for me." She said, before lying back on his chest.

Jael frowned, "It has been decided. There is no need to change it now."

"Okay," she mumbled.

A loud knock and she jerked. Jael swore under his breath. Erick couldn’t be quieter.

"I will be right back," he said and sat upright.

"Oh, um okay."

She moved off his chest so he could stand up. Her eyes darted from side to side and she held her hand to her chest, her other hand covering her injured hand.

Jael was hesitant as he walked away but this was a conversation he did not need her to hear. He walked toward the door, held the handle, and turned back to look at her.

She was still in the awkward pose and was looking at him. She smiled as their eyes met and Jael walked out of the door.

"You called for me," Erick said as soon as he saw Jael.

"Yes, I have a task for you."

"I am all ears."

"Before that. Where is his bastard?" He asked.

"In the confines of his room. Danag refuses to let him leave and he will have the second meal there."

Jael squinted, he didn’t want to know. The fact that he couldn’t do more was pissing him off. Seraphino knew this and knowing the maniac he would follow every restriction put on him.

"I see."

"The task, Sire."

"I need you to write a letter for Mauve."

"Huh?" Erick looked like his eyes were going to pop. "Why me? Anybody else can do this."

"Not only that. I need you to spend as much time as you can with her, I don’t want her to be alone and I can’t be there. Mill is also quite busy." Jael continued ignoring Erick’s complaints.

"Huh? Not only do I have to cater to her whims, but I also have to babysit her too. Danag would do a better job."

"Danag is too busy," Jael said without hesitation.

"Damon."

"I am pretty sure you write better than Damon," Jael said with a smirk.

"That’s not a compliment, your Grace."

"Really? You would rather Damon write better than you."

"No but to hear you say it sounds insulting."

"Can I count on you?" Jael said with a serious expression.

"Yes, sire," Erick said with a sigh.

He wasn’t pleased about this but Jael knew there was no way he would back out of an order. Erick was a firecracker but if there was one thing he was good at was doing his best at whatever task he was given.

Also, there was the fact that he was also a Lord. It wouldn’t be disrespectful if he went against another Lord.

"Another thing, watch her closely. Let me know as soon as something is amiss. She is not acting right."

"What does that mean?" He frowned.

"I don’t know but I don’t think leaving by herself is advisable."

Erick squinted his eyes but he simply nodded. Jael could see that he would rather do anything else but he was glad Erick wasn’t fighting this.

"Be here an hour after the second meal and do not leave until Mill shows up. That’s an order and not a word about this to Mauve."

"Won’t she be suspicious when I don’t leave after writing the letter?" He asked with a frown.

"Stall as much as you can."

Erick looked displeased, it was pretty obvious, he would rather not do this but Jael didn’t want have to change who keeps her company after the letter. She would know something was up and he did what her wary.

He sighed and touched the bridge of his nose. "Yes, Sire. Anything else."

"That’s all, Erick. You are dismissed."

Erick bowed and walked away. Jael wasted no time in returning to the room. Mauve was lying on her side and she was folding in a ball.

She sat upright as soon as she saw him walk in. She was smiling. He couldn’t comprehend how she could smile in this situation.

"Was that Erick?" She asked.

"Yeah," he said softly. His eyes never left her. "I told him to help you write the letter."

"Thank you," she mumbled. "I wouldn’t have been able to write it myself until my hand heals and I want to send it out as soon as possible.

"I figured."

He got to the side of the bed and sat down. "Are you sure you are fine?" He asked again. He hated reminding her of what had happened.

"Yes," she said. "Stop worrying." She clapped her hands together. "That reminds me, the plants. Did anybody water them?"

"Mack would have but I could ask him."

She vigorously shook her head. "You don’t have to, I am sure they will survive a few days without water."

She still had her hands on her chest and was subconsciously rubbing the back of her palm. He tucked a hair behind her hand and she leaned into his hand.

"Come in," he called out before Mill could knock. He could sense her behind the door.

"I still can’t fathom how you can do this."

He ruffled her hair. "Don’t worry about it."

"Hey!" She called out and stopped his hand.

"Sire," Mill bowed as she walked in with the tray. She walked briskly and placed the tray on the bedside table.

"Thank you, Mill," Mauve said.

"Is there anything thing else you need?" She asked.

"That’s all Mill." Jael said. "Mauve would let you know if she needs anything."

Mill bowed again and left the room. Mauve watched Mill leave the room while he kept his gaze on her.

"Are you hungry?"

Mauve sighed, "I am famished."

Jael picked up the tray and placed it on the bed. "I am sure."

"You know," she mumbled keeping her eyes down. "It has been a while since we did this."

Jael raised a brow, "Did what?"

She pouted but still refused to look at him. He frowned wondering what this was about.

"Ate alone. You know, just the two of us.

"Would you prefer that?" He asked.

"Sometimes," she mumbled.

"I will see what I can do," he said.

She raised her head to look at him. "Really?" She asked with a bright smile.

"Yeah, now eat up."
