Chapter 359: How Things Unfolded (2)
Ava’s eyes widened as she gasped, "Marcus?"
"Yes, Ava. It’s me," Marcus cried, holding Ava in his arms. "I’ve been looking all over the world for you..."
Despite almost melting with relief, Ava still managed to weakly push against him as she cried. "Marcus, my baby... Save my baby, please. My...."
Before Ava was able to finish her words, her head lolled back as she lost consciousness. As if snapping out of a trance, Marcus immediately yelled at his men as he held Ava’s unconscious body. He then looked at the crying baby in her arms and held her before letting his men move Ava.
Spurred by his orders, Marcus’s men instantly carried Ava’s body onto a stretcher while the man himself carried Raine in his arms. "You look exactly like your mother," he whispered almost lovingly. "Don’t worry, my child. You and your mother will be safe now. I’ll take care of the two of you."
Looking at the scene, their mother had obviously failed to tell Marcus about baby Mara being taken away. It was no wonder then why her Father Marcus wasn’t aware that she had a twin.
From there, Nathan shifted the vision to Lark’s past. The scene started with Lark having encountered a werewolf while searching the forest for more fruits for Ava. He had managed to escape, but unfortunately, he got bitten, causing him to lose consciousness while his body mutated.
"Ava... Oh, God... What’s happening to me?" Lark cried as he tried to fight the mutation ravaging his body. "Please don’t do this to me now... My wife needs me..."
Desperately, he tried to move and walk his way back to Ava. Unfortunately, he hesitated when he started feeling like he was losing himself in the process. This was what was happening to him when their Mother got worried to start looking for Lark.
Once more, the world shifted as Nathan directed the vision to where Marcus was carrying Raine on their way to the helicopter. They were just about to board when a loud howling was heard from the nearby tree line.
"Dad..." Raine gasped, recognizing their father who had arrived in his wolfman form.
Lark growled hard when he saw that his wife and baby would be taken away from him. In that instant, he attacked them. He was still obviously not in his rational self, but he could still recognize his wife and the baby crying in Marcus’s arms.
Seeing the threat, Marcus quickly gave baby Raine to one of his men, ordering him to bring her inside the helicopter that instant. All the while, Lark killed everyone who came in between him and Marcus. Soon enough, Lark was upon him, and just as the werewolf was about to attack him... Ava suddenly appeared, using her body to shield Marcus as she screamed, "Please don’t! He’s my brother, Lark!"
Unfortunately, it was too late for Lark to stop as his sharp claws pierced through Ava’s heart without him even knowing. Without so much as a breath passing, she died in that instant. Blinking, he pulled out Ava’s heart, the organ still beating on his palm as a reminder.
A beat passed before Lark’s loud howl filled the island. His body trembled as he started shifting back into his human form. The sky burst out in loud thunder, then a bolt of lightning suddenly struck him...
"Oh God... Please stop... I can’t watch this anymore," Raine cried out, gasping for breath.
In that instant, Nathan stopped the vision and broke his hand loose from Raine and Mara. The four of them were panting, the vision taking a toll on all of them...
"Raine..." Nathan whispered, trying to comfort his wife. But just as he stood up, he suddenly felt nauseous. He swayed for a solid second, still trying to keep himself together before he finally fell to the floor.
"Nathan!" Raine gasped in worry beside him.
"I’m fine... I just need some sleep," Nathan murmured with a smile. "I just... consumed too much energy...."
Nathan then completely lost consciousness. Without a word, Lark quickly carried Nathan on his back with Mara’s help. Raine sighed deeply as she looked at her husband. It was the first time that Nathan had tried doing that; showing them all a vision of the past simultaneously to make sure that they wouldn’t miss any single detail that could lead them to make room for any misunderstanding.
"Will he be alright?" Mara asked.
At her twin’s question, Raine stood up from the side of the bed and led Mara to sit with their father on the couch inside their bedroom.
"He’ll be fine. He just needs some rest since he’s exhausted," she reassured. "He’ll be awake soon."
"That’s good then," Mara sighed in relief.
"I will look after him if you have other things to do..." Lark worded out, taking them out of their musings.
Things to do? Ah, right... Just a while ago, their father had heard her promise to Mara that she would give her a tour inside their territory to better familiarize her twin with her new home. The Moon Clan as a whole was already aware of Mara’s existence and intentions to live with them, so Raine was also sure that their people would be excited to meet her in person... Not to mention her Moonlight Squad, who she was sure was already waiting anxiously.
Raine smiled at her father. "Alright, Dad. We won’t take long," she gratefully replied. "Please take good care of your Son-in-law."
The latter simply nodded, and Raine quickly grabbed Mara’s hand as she led her twin outside their bedroom. Reaching the living room, she couldn’t help but shake her head when she saw Lyne waiting for them.
"Oh my..." Lyne gasped as she looked at Mara.
Being caught before they were ready, Raine decided that she might as well do the pleasantries and proudly introduce Mara to Lyne. From there, Levi and Mia suddenly popped out too, both of them eager to see their Boss’s twin.
"Boss! How does it feel to have a twin?" Mia curiously asked.
"I feel great, of course," Raine smiled. She then excitedly added, "She’s special too, and has even more abilities than I do. I mean, she can differentiate a mutant and a human with just one look!"
All eyes widened at Mara, with the latter simply giving them a timid smile for all the attention she was being given.
"Oh, that’s great! Maybe Mara can replace you on the hunt while you’re on leave, Boss," Levi excitedly suggested. "She’s a good fighter too since she trained with the military under Keira’s husband!"
Raine’s face dimmed as she firmly stated, "No, that’s too dangerous. Besides, I don’t want Mara getting involved in our operations with the mutants. I want her to have a normal life."
With Raine’s statement, everyone became quiet... She then smiled and held Mara’s hand as she said, "Since Lyne is here, why don’t you all come with us while I tour Mara around the place? Might as well show you some of the ropes, so to speak."
"You two want to join? I’ll treat you to a good snack like old times," Raine told Levi and Mia. Raine pulled Mara as she walked ahead with her hand on hers only to halt when Mara suddenly spoke...
"I want to do it... Do something meaningful. I want to hunt those monsters sister because I believe that there’s a purpose why I have these abilities..."
