Chapter 356: Messed up Origins
Raine was hoping that Mara already had enough knowledge about supernatural things even if it was through myths just so that it would be easier for her to explain things further. Fortunately, based on the reports, her twin had a very exceptional level of intelligence. Also, Keira had made sure that her sister knew how to protect herself, which meant that she was also well-trained in physical fighting.
Thinking about it, Raine found herself thinking of ways how to show her gratitude to Keira and her husband Zach, who was now currently the Field Marshall for Country D. They had provided her twin sister with everything she could ever need and even made sure that Mara was well prepared to face the outside world in all of its aspects.
At her question, Mara sighed. "I know everything about it, along with all the other creatures that came with knowing them," she replied. "The moment I learned how to read back when I was in the facility with big sister Keira, the first thing I did was to search for what I really am. I knew that I’m quite different from other normal people here, so..."
She gulped, letting out another sigh before she continued. "I mean, I grew up speaking and only knowing the language of the Moonshine Tribe. Living on their isolated island for twenty-three years, it was obvious to me that they weren’t humans, but were actually werewolves the whole time."
Raine did her best to stop herself from interrupting and correcting Mara with the fact that there were also mythical and supernatural creatures roaming around them. That they were all simply being discreet wearing disguises. Instead, she let Mara continue her narration and explanations. She would just have told her twin that they called those underworld creatures here mutants later.
"I’m honestly glad that Keira and her husband accidentally found that island," Mara weakly chuckled. "I can’t imagine myself still living with those monsters and becoming the chosen Luna and breedmate for their Alpha."
Raine bit her lower lip as she wondered how Mara would react once she found out about Nathan being a werewolf. A while ago, she had just called werewolves monsters, so she could only assume that those of the Moonshine Tribe were like those werewolves from the stone ages, acting as if civilization hadn’t reached their island yet.
"They’re scary. They’d kill anyone who’d come to their island and even eat their flesh," Mara murmured, shivering from the memory of it all. "I couldn’t bear to watch them do it with their monstrous appearance."
Raine sighed deeply before quickly pulling Mara into her embrace. She could feel how unhappy Mara was on that island. Based on the report she got, that isolated island and the Moonshine Tribe inhabiting said island were confirmed to be a tribe of werewolves. The tribe would constantly refuse any interactions with the outside world, and they were also quite hostile to outsiders to the point of killing people who landed or even tried to approach the island.
Raine frowned, recalling Nathan’s accounts about her father Lark getting infected and turning into a werewolf due to one of the tribesmen back when their father and mother had accidentally gotten themselves stuck on that island. That was when the tragic fate between their father and mother happened, including the arrival of her father Marcus at that time which only further complicated things.
Raine felt like her head would explode at the thought. ’I should really see how things unfolded in the past...’
Shaking the thought out of her head, she then looked at her sister Mara. With a reassuring smile, she said, "Keira and her husband were also lucky to have met you there, Mara. I heard you helped them, and fortunately, they were rescued by the military at just the right time..."
She warmly nodded, "Indeed, I’ll forever be grateful to those two for bringing you along with them at the right time."
Raine then lovingly stroked her twin’s back giving the latter some much-needed comfort.
After a while, Mara gently pushed her away. She then looked at her intently as she murmured, "Your husband..."
Raine blinked and asked, "What about Nathan?"
Mara bit her lower lip, and Raine could already sense the hesitation coming off her twin.
"I feel something in him... He’s different..."
Raine’s eyes sparked, her lips curling in excitement at the thought of Mara’s special powers. It looked like she could also identify the difference between a human and a mutant.
"Like what?" Raine pondered keenly.
"He’s different, but I believe he’s one of the good ones," Mara hesitantly explained. "I can see a white color in him..."
"A white color?" Raine asked with knitted brows. That was quite different from how she differentiated things. Her red eyes could see the true nature of a creature even if they were disguised as a human; very different from what her twin just displayed.
"I can see the colors in their aura. If it’s white, that means that that person isn’t dangerous... A good one..." Mara stated. "If it’s black, however, then evils loom over that person. Your husband is a werewolf, while also being a good one."
Raine’s eyes widened and she burst out, "So you can easily tell if someone is a human or not just by looking at them?"
Based on what she just heard, it looked as if Mara had a more powerful gift than hers. At her question, Mara simply nodded, and Raine couldn’t contain her excitement at the fact! She needed to stare into someone’s eyes to differentiate them, and yet Mara here could tell them apart just with one look!
"Oh, that’s so cool, Mara!" Raine excitedly cheered. "I guess I won’t need to think up ways to explain how mutants in our world exist now!"
"Mutants?" Mara murmured with a blink.
"Yes," Raine chuckled. "We just recently called non-human creatures mutants since most of them become like that because of either uncontrolled mutations and being infected. Meanwhile, we call the original creatures of their kind Exordiums..."
Mara simply nodded, and Raine straightened her back as she felt adrenaline rushing through her veins. "How about we talk about the truth now? Also, my real name isn’t Candice, but Raine Tai, now Raine Tai Yue," she giggled. "Ah, it’s actually complicated how that happens, but would you like to hear the details now?"
Mara’s eyes sparkled as she eagerly nodded. "Yes yes! I want to hear everything now, Sis!"
"Alright, it’ll be a long night then..." Raine chuckled with a smile. "Let’s start with the story of how our family came from the royalty of the three clans forming the Mirage group..."
Ah, she wasn’t fond of doing storytelling, but seeing the look of anticipation on her twin sister, she couldn’t help but get excited in sharing to her every detail of their messed up origins!
