Chapter 353: Vote For
Chapter 353: Vote For
"Did you two really have to hide the fact that you two were married from us?" Raine asked after a few seconds of, ironically, recalibrating herself. "Why?"
At her question, Levi immediately gestured to Mia, the latter quickly stepping forward as she giggled, "Well, I just thought it would be a neat prank to play with you all... assuming none of you caught on this early, unfortunately."
Raine didn’t know whether to laugh or to congratulate the newlywedded couple before her. Sure, they hid their marriage from them all for a laugh, but it was something that she could respect. Why, if she had the same idea, she probably would’ve suggested the same thing to Nathan.
"Fair play then," Raine shrugged. "Too bad Lyne and I caught you two in the act."
"That’s assuming you two wouldn’t play along for laughs," Mia slyly suggested. "It’s just the two of you that know right now, right?"
Raine looked at Lyne, her right-hand woman neutrally backing off with raised eyebrows. It would seem that the decision would fall to her then.
"Assuming that we do so, how are we going to be sure that we’ll get our fair share of reactions from the people you try to prank?" Raine negotiated with a smirk. "Lyne and I are fine with it, but we still have to get something out of it?"
"Wouldn’t the CCTV cameras be enough for it?" Mia bartered with skillful intent. "With Levi and I in charge of it all, we could save some of the footage and have it shipped to the two of you easily."
Raine chuckled as she turned to Lyne, her friend shaking her head as if in admonishment of their current banter. "Is there something on your mind, Lyne?"
"You’re all assuming that I’ll still be here to acquire potential footage," Lyne faintly smirked, giving Raine a knowing look before turning to look at the couple in the room. "Also, shouldn’t your marriage be made public just so nobody would question why you two might go on sudden leave together someday?"
Levi scoffed, "That’s what I tried to tell Mia before, but she said it’d be fine."
"You didn’t say any of the sort," Mia glared at her husband before letting out a sigh. "Then again, it might be for the best. We can always prank our friends outside the team." She then turned to Lyne with a questioning look. "Also, why wouldn’t you be here for it? Unless... Did you finally get along with Boris?"
At the mention of her mate, Lyne turned bright red once more even as her expression remained as cool and composed as always. "...Indeed. I’ll be leaving once... I don’t really know, actually."
"Shouldn’t that be one of the first things you should know?" Raine jokingly admonished her. She then patted her shoulder as she chuckled, "Anyway, at least it’ll give us some time to come up with your replacement. Also, you should get your retirement speech ready. We’ll have to announce all of this later."
"As if I’ll say that outright," Lyne scoffed. "Even if I’m not here with you, I’m still one call away to be right back where I’m needed. Boris will understand if I take a few leaves of absence on your behalf."
"Which means I’ll use them sparingly for his sake," Raine laughed out loud, as did Levi and Mia as they all shook their heads.
"Man, I already feel bad for Boris once you get a bit more into the married life, Lyne," Levi chuckled. "I’m sure you’ll have him whipped in a month."
"More like two weeks," Mia giggled. "Our friend here can be pretty intense once she gets comfortable."
"C-Can we all stop teasing me already?" Lyne blushed, her voice coming out as a whisper. "A-And on the topic of replacements, speaking from experience, I don’t think I can easily be replaced."
"Oh, I know that, Lyne," Raine nodded. "That’s why I’m already considering either of the two in front of us."
At the change in topic, a sense of responsibility settled between the four of them. This was an important matter, one that could possibly change how the Moonlight Squad operated.
"If I may, I don’t think I’m fit for the job," Mia voiced out.
"Explain," Raine crossed her arms in thought.
"For one, I don’t think I’m hard enough on people to be your right-hand man," Mia reasoned, pausing as she thought to herself.
Raine raised an eyebrow. "And?"
"..That’s it?" Mia weakly chuckled. "Seriously, it’s not just about the skill, it’s also about the mindset, and I don’t think I’m fit for it."
"Understandable," Lyne nodded. "My work is very much a high-pressure environment."
"Hey..." Raine scoffed, catching the subtle tease at her supposed high demands.
"Besides, if I have to choose between the two of you, I’d vote for Levi," Lyne continued, preventing Raine from coming up with a comeback. "He’s more than capable of doing what I do, as well as being loyal to the Boss."
"W-Wait, are you serious?" Levi asked.
"Hmm... Ignoring the subtle jab, I agree," Raine hummed in agreement. "And Wena’s already being trained to man the control room, correct?"
"Yep," Mia eagerly nodded. "She’s coming along just fine."
"Then it’s settled," Raine cheered with a clap. "Shall we call for a vote and call it a day?"
"Don’t I get a say in this?" Levi weakly whined.
Ignoring the man being voted on, the women in the room all raised their hands, and Levi was quickly designated as Lyne’s replacement as Raine’s right-hand man.
"I feel like I just got railroaded," Levi sighed.
"Too late. You’re gonna be Lyne’s replacement now," Raine chuckled at Levi. "And why are you even worried? You’re practically running the show whenever Lyne and I aren’t around, right?"
"Well, it’s just so sudden," Levi pondered aloud. "But I guess I really am the next best thing."
"I’m glad you see it then, Dear," Mia giggled as she gave her husband a reassuring hug. "Besides, being in charge builds character... among other things..."
"I see that you like your men with a bit more confidence," Lyne noted, having noticed Mia’s sultry tone.
"Don’t we all," Raine chuckled. "So, we’re all settled then? Have we forgotten anything?"
"None that I can remember," Lyne replied.
"Same here," Mia responded, and Levi nodded in agreement.
"If that’s all, then let’s go spread the good news to the rest of the team," Raine cheered, her fist raised in the air in celebration.
"Yeah!"
With a celebratory cheer, the four of them went ahead and gathered the entire Moonlight Squad. From there, they went along as planned and spread the good word regarding the changes coming for their squad.
All the while, Raine’s initial quest to find Draki laid forgotten. Not that the wolf minded, seeing as it was subtly tailing them all the entire time without them even noticing.
