Chapter 339: Live It to the Fullest

Mia sated gobsmack at her maybe fiance as the sandwich she was holding dropped daintily onto the floor. The impact of bread landing against the carpet almost sounded deafening even when compared to her rapidly beating heart. Seconds ticked by, her mind still trying to process what she had just heard as she blinked blankly at the glittering rock that her beloved was presenting to her.

"Uhm... Mia?"

...

...

"Mia?"

She blinked rapidly, her wits coming back to her in batches as she yelped out. "Y-Yes?!"

"Are... Are you okay?"

Mia didn’t know what to say. Sure, she expected this to happen, but she didn’t think it would be this soon! "O-Of course! Why wouldn’t I be fine?!"

Despite her answer, Levi still looked on worriedly at her. She didn’t think that what she said was wrong, but could he at least give her a few more seconds to gather her thoughts here!?

Swallowing the piece of leftover sandwich she still had in her mouth, Mia shook her head in an effort to compose herself. There was thinking to be done here, and she didn’t want to waste any more time acting like an idiotic schoolgirl.

’Right, he’s asking me to marry him... Well, why shouldn’t I accept? Didn’t I want this?’ she inwardly thought. ’Why am I even thinking about this? I should just say yes!’

In the span of five seconds, Mia went from flustered to confident as a wide grin spread over her face. Looking at Levi’s nervous look, she couldn’t help but giggle as she kneeled down to meet him on his level.

"M-Mia?"

"What do you think I’d say?" she chuckled, presenting her hand to him even as her heart hammered inside her chest. "Obviously, I’ll say-"

*WOOF!*

The one word that truly mattered remained unheard as Draki had suddenly made its presence known. She didn’t even notice how close the wolf already was. It even had the sandwich she dropped on the floor in between its teeth.

"D-Draki?" Levi stammered as the wolf decided that the space between the two of them was now the comfiest spot to lay down in. "Now isn’t the best time to be doing this."

"Oh just let him do what he wants," Mia shook her head in amusement. "Besides, it hadn’t ruined the moment, right?"

"W-What?"

"I was going to say yes," Mia casually stated, her blush contrasting the nonchalant tone she had just used. "And I was even thinking of us getting married right now."

Levi’s eyes widened. "R-right now?! Wouldn’t you want- Woah!"

Not letting Levi get his bearings back, Mia pulled him up with him before snatching the box right from his hands. Putting it on, she then grinned at him as she raised her hand to show the ring glimmering on her ring finger.

"Ooh... It even fits perfectly," Mia cooed. "When did you get my ring measurements?"

Levi was clearly flustered by the rapid onslaught of her advances. Scratching the back of his head, he admitted, "I kind of just snuck in and measured it while you were napping that one time."

"Sneaky," Mia nodded in approval. "Right! Let’s go to the registrar’s office and have us get married there!"

"What? Why?!" Levi asked, flabbergasted by her decision. "Wouldn’t you want a wedding? A ceremony?"

Laughing maniacally, Mia replied, "Who has time for all of that stuff? We only have so much time before we grow old and die, right?"

"W-Well, yes, but-"

"Then why waste time with all that pomp?" Mia asked, her grip on his arm tightening as she began pulling him along with her. "We’re not as important as Raine or Nathan anyway. We’ll be fine just throwing a wild party between friends afterwards!"

Not wasting any time, she then dragged Levi out with her from the control room all the way to the parking garage. Only then did Levi concede defeat as he fished out his car keys and drove them both all the way to the nearest registrar’s office.

"We’re really doing this, huh," Levi weakly chuckled as they stood in front of the office. "Right here and now?"

"Why? Having second thoughts?" Mia taunted.

"Of course not!" Levi proudly declared, having gathered his wits back to him on their way to the office. "I’ve planned for this for weeks, Mia. It’s just that I didn’t expect it to all happen this quickly."

"Well, you should know by now that I don’t like wasting time pussyfooting around stuff that we can always do immediately," Mia pointed out with a wag of her finger. "Why not do today what you can do tomorrow, right?"

She then chuckled as she watched her beloved sigh in resignation. "It’s just... Do you really want this?"

Mia let out a small smile as she took on a more serious tone. "Yes, Levi. I want this to happen. I want us to get married. I love you."

Her chest tightened from all the emotions that suddenly swelled within her. All of a sudden, her earlier bravado seemed to seep away from her as the gravity of the situation sank in. This was one of the reasons why she wanted to move quickly. It was so that she wouldn’t lose her nerve.

"Okay!"

Mia flinched as Levi yelled out. With a chuckle, she nodded. "Yeah! Let’s do this!"

Together, the two of them walked into the government office. On that day, they would walk in as a couple, but by the end of it all, they would be walking out of that building as husband and wife. They only lived once, right? So why not live it to the fullest? By the end of it, they will all be better off for it.

And then an idea struck Mia just as they were about to sign the dotted lines.

"Hey, do you think we can keep this from the others for as long as possible?" she mischievously asked.

"What for?" Levi asked. "Wait, you want to hide our marriage from our friends?"

"Only from the unobservant," Mia grinned. "We won’t deny it if someone asked, but wouldn’t it be fun to see the look on their faces if we somehow managed to hide this from them for at least an entire week?"
