Chapter 334: My Luna
Chapter 334: My Luna
Boris sighed as he found himself being swamped with work as the newly reestablished Alpha of the Night Crawler pack. The days after the trial had been hectic, but after all was said and done, he got his former position back, and with it, came the power and the responsibilities that he once held before he was exiled in the first place.
Unfortunately, being the Alpha meant that the responsibilities he now held were magnified tenfold. And with it, came the paperwork.
"Ugh..." Boris groaned into his desk, mountains upon mountains of paperwork stacked against him despite his constant efforts at keeping them at bay. "I’ll run out of ink on my pen at this rate... Why in the hell is everything so cluttered anyway?"
He knew exactly what the answer to that question was. With his return as the Alpha came a massive reorganization of ranks with the Pack. Of course, he had to at least see everything that came and went within his jurisdiction, and with it, came the debilitating amount of reports that he had to read and sign on.
"I should’ve said no," he jokingly lamented as he kept on working. "I could’ve just worked directly under Aspen, but no... I said yes..."
Still, despite all of his complaints, Boris knew that he wouldn’t have it any other way. This was his rightful position, after all. Even if it was work that he didn’t necessarily miss, it was his responsibility either way.
That, and the higher position meant that he had more to give Lyne in his attempts to woo her.
That was the one shining light keeping him going against the hell that was paperwork. The fact that Lyne gave him a chance was something he didn’t want to squander. Sure, he was so busy these days that he could barely try and see her whenever they had the time, but what little time they did get was some of the best moments of his life.
Unfortunately, those good times will inevitably have to come to an end.
As of now, Lyne was already preparing to leave the Society in favor of going back to the Moon Clan. Of course, Boris didn’t really want it to happen, but he was afraid of pushing things too far with her.
Despite truly trying her best, it was clear that she still held up some of her guard while talking to him. Or at least, that was what it looked like to him. Worse, their limited time together had, well, limited his attempts at softening her up. Sure, Lyne was reciprocating, but it wasn’t enough. He wanted her by his side no matter what.
Standing up, Boris prepared himself for the last surprise he had in store for her before she left. Ignoring the call of work, he made his way to her room.
"Lyne?"
With a knock, the door opened, revealing a rather prepared Lyne waiting for him behind her door. Looking past her shoulder, he could see that she had already packed up her things, only waiting now for the signal for her to return to her home.
"Boris?" she greeted him with her usual faint smile. "Is there something wrong?"
"Well, you’re going back to the Moon Clan, right?" he began, mounting up the courage for him to speak.
"Yes," Lyne nodded. "With the situation in the Convel Society finally stabilizing, my supervising duties here are no longer needed."
Boris felt a pang hit his heart with how nonchalantly she just said that she was leaving. Still, he kept himself in check as he replied, "I see. Well, how about I give you a tour of the Night Crawler Pack?"
Lyne blinked. "Are you sure? Don’t you have a lot of work to do?"
"They can wait for now," Boris insisted. "You’re leaving, so I want to at least have a bit more time with you."
"This is a date then," Lyne pointed out.
"I guess you can say that," he chuckled as he scratched the back of his head.
"Okay then."
With a nod and a smile, Lyne stepped forward and allowed him to give her a tour of his part of the Convel Society. Each pack had its own section in the territory, and the Night Crawler pack was no exception as Boris gave her the overview of the entire area. He even allowed her into some of the places that would usually be off-limits to outsiders, which surprisingly ended with Lyne scolding him for not doing his job properly.
All in all, it was a successful run, and by the end, they were both full of smiles as Boris took her to a more populous spot in his territory. Seeing this many people around them, Lyne visibly tensed, making him regret what he was about to do.
Unfortunately for him, his mouth was far faster than his brain could stop it.
"Lyne, this could all be yours too if you just became my Luna."
And just like that, all eyes were on them. Everyone had heard what he just said, and Boris wouldn’t be able to take his words back.
"Boris?"
He gulped, cursing his instincts for pushing through despite his fears. Still, he had gone this far. He might as well go all the way. He did plan for this, right?
"Lyne, I know this might be a bit sudden, and it might even sound weird coming from me, but..." He took a deep breath and pulled out a box from his left-hand pocket. Kneeling, he gave her his best hopeful smile as he asked. "Will you marry me?"
The silence was deafening. This was the equivalent of him declaring to the pack that she was going to be their Luna. All of them were staring at him, most probably cheering him on despite his attention being focused solely on Lyne.
After a few moments, she spoke. "I... Can I think about this?"
His heart sank, but only for a little. It wasn’t a no, so there was still a chance!
"O-Of course!" he nodded as he quickly stood up and stashed the box back into his pocket, his worry making him speak at the speed of light. "There’s no need for a rush! And-"
He froze as he felt a soft peck landing on his cheek. Looking at her, the blush on her face almost made him melt.
"Don’t worry," she insisted, her voice wavering slightly. "It’s just... I won’t say yes, but not no either... Not yet, at least... So keep that box warm while I think things through..."
