Chapter 333: Too Weird
After all was said and done, Raine had Cali immediately brought to a hospital where she would be taken care of. She also let Nathan handle Balon while giving her father clean-up duty.
Currently, she was in the hospital lobby, sitting on a chair when she received a call from Mia.
"Boss, Janus is back," Mia reported.
Hearing the news, Raine could only let out a sigh of relief. She was honestly worried about Cali and what she had witnessed. The poor woman had seen Balon shifting into his wolf-man form, and it was a horrendous sight to see. It would be nice if she could delete that ugly part from Cali’s memory completely.
Still on the call, Raine let out another long deep sigh as she stood up. Finally, the case was closed, and now that Nathan had also wrapped things up with the Convel Society, they would finally have a lot of free time together with her father. And once she also got to know and meet her twin sister, they’d be free to spend their time with one another as a family.
"Boss, about Sasha, are we going to proceed as planned?" Mia asked through the phone. "I’ve gathered enough evidence pinning her to crimes. We can eliminate her from this alone. After all, the Convel Society isn’t exempted from our jurisdiction as hunters."
Oh right, she had almost forgotten about that plan of hers to bring the bjtch down. "Put it on hold. Let’s see if she’ll be good and keep from making any drastic moves against me now that Nathan has already abdicated the throne," she instructed.
"This will only go in circles if I killed her now. Lucio, her father, won’t stay idle. Right now, I only want peace. I’m with child, so it’s better for me to stay still... Maybe once my baby is out then maybe I’ll deal with it, Mia. For now, my baby’s safety is my top priority. It’ll already be hard for me to fight in my condition, let alone try to open that can of worms while I’m pregnant."
"Alright then, Boss. I agree with you on this one," Mia audibly nodded. "Anyway, I’ll forward this to Aspen instead so that he can do whatever he sees is fit with it. Who knows? What if Aspen gets himself a woman and Sasha decided to do something about it because of her obsession to become Queen? That’ll be their problem, not ours."
"Yes, please do that," Raine slightly chuckled. "Also, I’ll talk to Chad and the Mirage Council about this. Let their teams be more involved in future operations."
The Earth and the Sun Clans had their own squads to deal with underworld creatures just like hers. It was just that those Squads weren’t as good as hers, which made her more efficient as they picked up the slack from the other clans.
Well, it was given since she had a big part in why they were the best. She had angel blood in her veins, and that was on top of having special powers that could tell the difference between a mutant from a human.
"I’ll be ending this call now, Mia. See you soon," Raine said before ending the call. Standing up from her chair, she then walked towards Cali’s room. On the way there, she pondered, "I wonder if Mara has the same special abilities as I do..."
Arriving at the door, Raine was about to enter the room when she paused, hearing Cali and Ruis’s conversation seeping through the door.
"Rui, if anything bad happens to me... I want you to continue moving forward..." Cali insisted with a firm voice. "I’ll be happy if you moved on to find another love for your life..."
"Let’s not talk about all that rubbish," Rui insisted. "All that’s important now is that you’re safe..."
"I would like to talk to Candice," Cali sighed. "I’m not sure if I was hallucinating, but I saw Edward turn into something... something so scary... He’s not human, Rui..."
Again, Raine breathed out a long deep sigh. This was why the memory-loss powder was very important to their every hunt. Having heard enough, she immediately opened the door and stepped inside.
"You were hallucinating," Raine nonchalantly commented. "You see, Edward, injected something in your body when he abducted you. It’s some kind of drug that can make you hallucinate..."
With a wide smile, she explained it all away in a way that would sound mundane. She also had a paper bag full of sweets that she handed over to Rui. She was a good actress, so hopefully, these two lovebirds would buy whatever it was that she said.
"How are you?" Raine asked Cali with a wink, turning the conversation away from the monster that she saw.
"I’m better now... Thank you for rescuing me," Cali replied with a smile. "I heard your voice before I totally lost consciousness, so I knew it was you."
"I told you, I won’t let anything happen to you, or else Rui here would hunt me down to the ends of the earth," Raine snorted. "You see, he threatened me big time back then..." She scoffed, recalling just how the man did indeed threaten her if the operation that she proposed ended up with Cali getting hurt.
"As if I’ll ever get scared of him though," Raine added with a chuckle.
A lull in the conversation allowed the nurse that just arrived to remove the dextrose from Cali’s IV drip.
"Are you finally leaving us alone then?" Rui whispered with a grin to Raine.
Raine lifted her brows as she said, "Is that how you’ll thank me then?"
Rui laughed and reiterated, "Well, you can stay with us for as long as you want, but on the condition that you’ll sleep in your own room from now on." He raised a finger as he added, "Also, don’t be too clingy with Cali."
Raine’s face twitched as she playfully mumbled, "Maybe you’d prefer if I was the one being clingier to you then, huh?"
"Youuu..." Rui scorned, but Raine only sniggered at him before she walked over to Cali’s bed.
"You’ll have a lot of explaining to do later," Rui pointed out. "I still find everything too weird, especially with how Edward managed to abduct Cali as if it was nothing. There were no break-outs, and even the CCTV footage showed no signs of him breaking in and entering the house at all..."
Raine rolled her eyes and murmured, "If I opened my mouth and tell you everything, then this case will no longer be called confidential."
She shook her head, "Geez... Isn’t it enough for you that Cali’s safe and that there’s no more danger lurking around her? Don’t think too much about things that no longer matter. Just spend some time enjoying your second chance with Cali like this, yeah?"
"Raine is right," Cali chuckled from her bed. "Let’s not make her head hurt even further."
Dropping her smile, Raine then squinted her eyes at Rui as she threatened, "If you start asking unnecessary things again, don’t blame me if I snatch Cali’s attention away from you." She huffed for a bit as she scoffed, "You see, I like Cali, and I feel like the two of us will get along well like real sisters... maybe even more if I’m feeling it."
"Fine, fine. No more questions," Rui pouted. "So you better not cling too much to her now..." he snorted, making Raine and Cali chuckle at his reaction.
