Chapter 332: You’re Safe
Chapter 332: You’re Safe
Another morning came, and Raine thanked her senses that she stopped herself from going too overboard last night that she could afford to wake up early. It would be a challenging day for them all, seeing as they were assuming that Balon would make a move to kidnap Cali by any means starting today. Reluctantly, Raine had to go back next door to personally stay with the potential victim.
Getting up, she quietly left Nathan in his deep slumber before making her way down to the kitchen. There, she saw her father preparing breakfast.
"Good morning, Dad!"
"Good morning. I’ll cook some omelets for you," her dad informed her.
"Hmm... I don’t think I’ll be joining you guys for breakfast today," Raine chuckled. "Starting today, I have to stick to Cali like glue. I’ll be going now, so please tell Nathan that I’m just next door if he looks for me."
Her father simply nodded, and Raine turned around to walk out of the house and directly to Rui’s house. Going inside like she owned the place, she immediately requested a cup of coffee once she saw Rui staring at her.
Shrugging, Rui handed her the coffee mug. "Careful, it’s still hot," he advised. "Geez, can you at least inform us next time whenever you leave or come back? You’re like a mushroom, disappearing and just popping up as you pleased!"
Raine only chuckled at the man before turning to walk straight into Rui’s room. With her cup of coffee in hand, she decided to check on Cali.
"Had a good sleep?" Raine asked the moment Cali opened her eyes.
"What are you doing here?" Cali mumbled, blushing at Raine’s sudden appearance.
"Checking on you," Raine casually replied while sipping on her coffee, sitting comfortably on the couch inside the room. "Rui’s preparing breakfast downstairs. Why don’t you go and get ready for school?"
"You’re creepy," Cali complained as she stood up. "How can you just barge your way in here unannounced?"
"Well... That’s my expertise, barging in unannounced," Raine chuckled. "Anyway, I’m afraid we’ll have to move to the next level. Today’s the day of the hunt, and I have to make sure that you’re completely safe."
"Is that why you were gone last night?" Cali asked, her face turning pale in thought.
Raine only nodded. Well, she would’ve loved to enlighten Cali and tell her that she was busy being eaten out by her husband, but she decided that it was too inappropriate to say such things aloud.
"I think Rui deserves to know about this," Cali pointed out.
"Yeah, you’re right, him knowing about this wouldn’t change a thing. The outcome will still be the same. Whether you stay here or go out, nothing will happen," Raine stressed out. "In the end, Edward will still manage to take you, and the only solution we do have is to let him take you before tracking him down that very instant."
If they didn’t do that, Balon would definitely get a pardon like before when they caught him without any evidence of him disobeying the underworld’s laws. The man was very good at cleaning up his dirt, and Raine won’t be able to eliminate him without enough proof of his crimes. Yes, that was how things worked in Mirage... They couldn’t simply kill any mutant whenever they felt like it because if they could... Balon would’ve been dead ages ago.
"Are you sure nothing will happen to me?" Cali nervously whispered out.
Raine put her mug on the table and stood up to walk towards Cali. Holding onto her shoulders, she gave her a reassuring smile. "Nothing will happen to you, Cali. I promise you that," she insisted with a warm smile. "You’re under our protection now. Rui wouldn’t even know that you’re gone when it happens. You’ll be back with him on the same night you get abducted."
Seeing Cali nod, Raine felt grateful that the former trusted her enough like this. Maybe it was because Yera told her about how she had saved the older woman’s life before.
After a few more instructions to Cali, they had breakfast. Afterwards, Raine had a serious conversation with Rui and Xander. She reiterated that they couldn’t mobilize the police because technically, there was no evidence that they could use against Edward.
Hearing this, Rui was clearly uneasy. "How about we go back to Country D?" he suggested.
"He’ll still follow," Raine rebutted. "Right now, everyone believes that he simply dropped out. But we all know that he’s just around the corner, lurking, waiting for an opportunity to do the deed."
"What can I do to help?" Rui asked.
"Nothing... Just stay by her side in every possible way," Raine replied. "I’ll make sure that nothing happens to her during this operation, Rui. Don’t worry."
"Can’t they just stay here at home then?" Xander suggested. "It’ll be safer that way..."
Everyone agreed, and lunch was promptly laid out. From there, everything turned out normal until...
"Where’s Cali?" Rui hysterically burst out when he realized that Cali wasn’t in the bathroom where she was supposed to be taking a bath.
"Calm down... Everything is under control," Raine soothed as she took control of the situation. "You all wait here."
Taking that as her cue, she then walked out of the house and went inside the car where Nathan and her father Lark were already waiting for her. Engaging their tracking devices, they hit the road while following Cali’s location on the map.
"Boss, we’ve already surrounded the place," Dan reported just as soon as Raine arrived at Balon’s den.
"Good," Raine nodded.
"You promised you won’t fight," Nathan reminded her just as Raine was about to barge her way inside the abandoned building.
Raine rolled her eyes. "Aren’t you by my side anyway? Both you and Dad will be with me, so what’s the worst that could possibly happen to me?" she annoyingly asked. "From you two alone, I’m already well protected. Not to mention all my other men surrounding the perimeter."
"Tsk... Cali needs to see me," she reasoned out. "Imagine how traumatized she is right now. She needs to see me so that she’ll calm down and feel safer."
With a sigh, Nathan conceded. "Fine. Just stick with us, alright?"
"Yeah yeah..." Raine scoffed. "Now hurry up before that Balon can touch a single strand on her."
At her command, they all began to make their move. Hitting the record, she watched as Balon talked trash to Cali inside the room. A few seconds of footage later, they already got more than what they needed on video; enough evidence to kill the monster maniacally describing every little thing he was planning to do to Cali.
Without wasting any moment, her men barged in, her father and Nathan immediately fighting Balon while Cali’s eyes darted to her. Moving in close, Raine smiled at her and whispered, "You’re safe now."
It was the last thing Cali heard before she finally lost consciousness.
Nodding, Raine signaled for one of his men to pick up Cali as she watched her father Lark pin Balon down. Their eyes met, and Raine’s eyes glowed red.
"You!!!" Balon exclaimed.
Raine had a wide smile as she said, "Yup, no one else but me. The Bloody-eyed Hunter."
With that, Balon cursed, knowing that there was no way he would escape his doom from his captors.
