Chapter 326: Simply Logical

"A call?"

Raine was still busy with her own preparations when her phone suddenly rang. She didn’t know how or why it was ringing, especially since she was pretty sure she wasn’t expecting any sort of news from anyone, but she might as well check and see what was making her phone buzz in her back pocket.

"Dad? What’s wrong?" Raine quizically asked upon seeing the caller ID on her screen. A tinge of worry blooming in her chest, she answered the call. "Hello?"

"Hello, Raine. When would you be coming home?" her father asked his tone still as soulless as ever despite her progress. "Would it be fine for you to eat dinner here at home?"

Raine was taken aback. She was pretty sure her father wasn’t capable of asking for this. Did Nathan ask him to do this?

"Did Nathan put you up to this?" Raine asked.

"...Would it be fine for you to eat dinner here at home?"

Hearing her father repeat the same sentence, she already knew that her husband had indeed made him try and get her to come back home. Still, she wouldn’t fault him for trying. She was actually missing him fierce now, with her pride being the only thing holding her back from just jumping for joy and nuzzling her face all over her mate’s chest.

’This is such a pain...’ she inwardly sighed.

In the span of a few seconds, Raine had to decide whether or not she wanted to indulge Nathan’s attempts of placating her. On one hand, she really didn’t want to back down from her position. She had established that she wouldn’t forgive him that easily, and it had barely been over a day since it all happened. Then again, on the other hand, he had obviously gotten along well with her father. The fact that Nathan had co-opted her father into calling her was a clear sign that they’d spent some decent time together already. And for them to invite her back for dinner?

Truth be told, she was already excited just thinking about it.

"I’ll see what I can do," Raine neutrally responded. "I might be back later tonight for dinner though, but again, I’ll see if I can afford to leave here."

"Thank you, Raine," Lark responded, almost too robotically as if he was reading something. "Nathan and I will look forward to your return."

"Yeah," Raine couldn’t help but smile. "I’ll see you later then."

Cutting the call, she knew that she had pretty much already confirmed that she was coming back. And why shouldn’t she? If her father deemed Nathan good enough to help him like this, then maybe her husband had already finished her challenge.

"And if he was already done, then maybe I can actually forgive him..."

Well, that last part could probably use some work, but she was more than ready to just jump him and have some much-needed time with her husband. God knows that she needed some pampering in her life right now, what with the stuff she was about to do to complete her mission.

"What do I wear though," she wondered aloud. "Maybe something decent for other activities?"

One thing was for sure, Raine would try and take advantage of the situation she was just given.

Nathan let out a sigh of relief as Lark finished up the call. He wasn’t even sure if it was going to work, what with Raine’s father sounding far too obvious in reading his script. Nevertheless, he was grateful that the man even entertained his plan, much less even participate in it.

"It is done," Lark nodded. "She will be coming home later."

"Great," Nathan almost cheered. "We should get to work in preparing her a feast then. Heat up some of the broth and get some other things brewing."

"Agreed."

And with that, the two men set off to work. Nathan couldn’t help but feel excited about his mate’s return. Thankfully, Lark agreed to his plan after he had explained himself to him. He didn’t think that his words would work, but his heartfelt desire to reconcile with Raine must’ve reached the man despite his current state.

"Why did you agree to my plan, by the way?" Nathan absently asked, his hands already hard at work in preparing for dinner.

Lark gave him a brief look before returning to his work. With a neutral tone, he replied, "You stressed that you are my son-in-law and that we should strive to have a good relationship with one another for Raine’s sake. Seeing as my daughter is your wife, I can agree with the logic you proposed."

Nathan couldn’t help but chuckle. "That sounds pretty detached there."

"It is simply logical," Lark insisted, his knife already doing work on a slew of vegetables. "And you are his husband, meaning that she, as your wife, should also have a good relationship with you for the sake of the marriage."

The former king of the Convel Society almost felt his sweat drop at the clinical dissection of his father-in-law’s reasoning. It sounded far too detached, even though he knew that deep inside, the man still cared for his daughter.

"You really care about her, huh..."

"Her happiness is my utmost mission," Lark explained, his hands moving to prepare the stove. "If Raine is having problems with her marriage, then it is my duty to try and rectify the situation."

Nathan was about to laugh when he felt the faintest hint of a malicious aura rolling off the man. But just as quickly as it came, it vanished in the blink of an eye. Still, despite that, he quickly got the memo that the man had just given him.

"I promise I’ll do my best, sir," Nathan smiled.

Lark didn’t respond, but the fact that he kept on working meant that he probably approved of what Nathan just said. Perhaps this surprise he had cooking up for Raine would be a successful one. He just had to make it count. And maybe... just maybe... he’d finally at least get a hug from his beautiful wife.
