Chapter 323: Get To Know Him
Chapter 323: Get To Know Him
Getting on the first flight he could possibly get to Country A, Nathan practically sped through all of the arrangements he needed to give the Convel Society away to Aspen. As much as he said that he was abdicating immediately, he still couldn’t help but at least brief his replacement about the things that needed his immediate attention such as logistics and other pressing matters. But as soon as he was done, he jumped on the nearest private jet he could commission and fly right on over to his waiting mate.
Unfortunately, his arrival had gone off to a rocky start...
"Please, Raine?" Nathan pleaded, almost begging his wife as he stood by the doorway of their current home. "Can you please forgive me?"
He had arrived in front of the house where Raine and her father had been staying for some time now. In fact, almost an hour had already passed, but his wife was still standing by the doorway, barring his entry as she crossed her arms underneath her chest.
"I still haven’t forgiven you," Raine pouted, her lips pursed as she avoided looking at him directly. "You even distracted me from what I’m about to do today. I’m already late as it is."
Nathan winced. Sure enough, she currently had a few bags beside her feet containing some of her stuff to go. He wanted so badly to compliment her for her taste, but her prior experience with doing so just a few minutes ago told him that trying to break her composure through sweetness wasn’t going to work like it usually did.
"Can I at least do something to earn your forgiveness then?" Nathan asked, already running out of options in trying to placate his irate wife. "Maybe I can drive you to work? Treat you out on a date?"
He almost cheered to himself when he saw her cheeks blush at his words. However, his joy was short-lived as she rebuffed him. "I can drive myself to work just fine. And you can do those things you said after I’ve forgiven you."
"What should I do then?" Nathan pleaded. "Come on, my sweet vixen. Can I at least make it up to you?"
Thankfully, those words seemed to have their desired effect as Raine finally looked him in the eyes for the first time since he arrived. "How about this... Why don’t you spend some time with Father while I’m out with Rui and Cali next door?" she offered, his longing gaze telling him that she missed him just as much as he did her. "Get to know him enough, and maybe I’ll finally forgive you."
"I can do that," Nathan quickly nodded. "Where is he?"
"He’s in the house," Raine pointed out, her hands already holding up her bags as she made for the sidewalk. "Anyway, I’m not sure when I will be back..."
And with that, Nathan could only watch as Raine walked further and further away from him. Just when he thought that they could finally spend some time together, his own miscalculation had wrenched that away from them both.
"Well, at least I’m already here," Nathan sighed in small victories. "I’ll just have to make it up to her by doing as she asked."
With his resolve rising, Nathan finally stepped foot inside the house, leaving his bags by the stairwell as he looked for Raine’s father. Making his way to the kitchen, it was there that he saw Lark. The man simply stood there, seemingly busy staring at various ingredients and kitchen appliances before he turned his gaze toward him.
"Greetings," Nathan awkwardly greeted, making his way further into the kitchen. "Are you busy?"
"Not at the moment," Lark coldly replied, his eyes dead to the world. "Can I help you?"
Nathan blinked. Suddenly, the task he had been given seemed harder than he thought it would be. After all, how was he supposed to connect with someone that didn’t have any emotions?
"Not at the moment," Nathan pensively replied, his mind whirring as he tried to think of various icebreakers he could use. "Although, were you planning on cooking something?"
"Indeed," Lark nodded. "I was trying to find a way to make a dish that Raine had been requesting for a while now."
"I see..."
Nathan nodded as his eyes quickly ran through the ingredients available. From there, he surmised that Raine wanted ramen of all things. He didn’t think she particularly craved such a dish before, but maybe her pregnancy was affecting her taste buds.
Still, he could work with this. "Shall I help you then?"
"If you insist," Lark passively nodded.
Inserting himself into the kitchen, Nathan did what he did best whenever he was trying to cook. Taking some of the wheat flour and turning it into a dough, Lark was quick to pick up the pace as they worked in tandem for something that Raine wanted to eat. He worked on the noodles, while the older man focused more on the broth along with the meat and vegetables that would go into the bowl.
Silently, they worked in tandem, and somehow, Nathan could feel that he was getting closer to Raine’s father the more they worked together like this. There was a connection to be had for those that cooked together, and by the end of their session, they were working like a well-oiled machine in the kitchen.
"That should do it," Nathan nodded as both of them stared at the finished product, two bowls of hot ramen now serving as a reward for their efforts. "We can always just reheat the broth, and we can leave some of the noodles uncooked for when Raine comes back."
Sitting down, Nathan began eating his portion. Slurping on the noodles, he nodded at a job well done before he noticed that Lark wasn’t eating. "What’s wrong?" Lark didn’t respond, leaving the initiative to speak back to him as he insisted, "Go ahead and eat. We’ve earned it."
Only then did Raine’s father eat. Seeing him slurp on the broth, Nathan smiled as he noticed the slightest hint of the man’s eyebrow raising at the taste. He supposed that was the most he’d get from the man for now as they ate. Either way, he had clearly made some progress with Raine’s request.
"Let’s make sure Raine gets the love and care she deserves," Nathan chuckled at Lark. "I’m sure we can do that just fine, right?"
