Chapter 322: The New King
With Boris’s trial all set and done, Nathan had one less obstacle left in the face of his inevitable abdication. Of course, everyone in the know was shocked at the revelation of Danos’s crimes and inevitable fate, but time still moved forward.
Boris himself was currently making preparations to retake his position as the Alpha of his own pack, and he as king was still hard at work laying down the groundwork for his departure.
And yes, that also meant that the Elders back at the Convel Society were still hard at work trying to oust him before he was ready.
"Just because one of us had been revealed to be doing heinous crimes right beneath our noses doesn’t mean that the rest of us will keep quiet!"
Nathan couldn’t help but sigh as he found himself back on the proverbial hot seat, the Elders around him getting on his case as he once again had to attend yet another emergency meeting regarding his choice for a wife and queen.
"And for the last time, I refuse to divorce my wife," Nathan rolled his eyes as he insisted on his case. "There’s nothing that will change my mind on that matter."
"Then why are we even here discussing this in the first place?" an Elder cried out in outrage. "If our King refuses to divorce him then he should abdicate the throne immediately!"
Nathan shook his head in annoyance. He really didn’t mind, but he still wanted to do a bit more cleaning in regard to all the paperwork and leftover problems that Danos’s disappearance had caused. Sure, he could dump it all on Aspen if he wanted to, but that was just bad form as a responsible ruler.
He needed to buy some time. Even a week would do for his purposes.
"Should I really, Elder Lucio?" Nathan pointedly questioned. "Has there been any evidence that my being married to Raine had hampered the Society’s goals and objectives?"
"The fact that you’re even fighting us on this is more than enough proof that you’ve been compromised," the Elder in question scoffed. "The King of the Convel Society should put the Society first above all else! You’re being selfish, using our resources for your own benefit without any shame whatsoever!"
Nathan fought the urge to laugh at the accusation. It was true, after all. Just because he still cared about all the things he was about to leave behind for Aspen didn’t mean that he wouldn’t try and skim some resources out from under them, especially if Raine would clearly benefit from his actions.
"And where is your proof of this?" Nathan coolly rebutted. "I don’t see anything of the sort being passed along, so I’ll take that as a conjecture to oust me from the throne."
The King flashed a small smirk at the offending Elder, taking a bit of pleasure from the old man’s troubles as he effectively stalled for time. Really, Elder Lucio had been pushing hard to have him get a divorce, possibly at the behest of his daughter Sasha who just so happened to be standing behind the old man. She probably thought that she could still get a shot at marrying him. Not that it would even happen, but Nathan could give kudos to the half-baked plot.
"That’s irrelevant!" another Elder shouted out. "You being the king to both the Moon Clan and the Convel Society will clearly split your attention. The inevitable conflict of interest that will arise will devastate both groups if that’s what you’re even worried about."
Nathan raised an eyebrow. Someone that was actually making some sense? Now that was a rarity.
"While that is true, I can assure you that there won’t be any problems in that regard," Nathan smiled. "I’m more than capable of-"
"You’re just covering yourself right now!" Elder Lucio yelled out after composing himself. "That bitch you call a wife clearly has you by the balls if you’re defending her so hard!"
The room turned cold as the Elder’s words slowly sank into Nathan’s mind. Just like that, all thoughts of stalling went out the window. Truly, trying to hold onto a group that he would leave in less than a week anyway was clearly no longer worth it.
"Is that so?" Nathan coolly responded. "So I have no choice but to either get a divorce or leave the Society entirely?"
"T-That’s right!" the Elders cheered. "So, have you finally seen reason?"
"Oh, I’ve seen reason alright," Nathan scoffed as he stood up. "As of this day, I will be abdicating the throne to the Convel Society."
The silence that followed was deafening. Seeing his opportunity to speak unopposed, he added, "Aspen shall take my place as your new King. In truth, I was planning on leaving in a few days anyway. I want to focus on the Moon Clan, and you all gave me the perfect excuse to leave sooner rather than later." He let out another scoff as he moved, "Now if you’ll excuse me..."
And with that, Nathan promptly left the room, slamming the door behind him just before the Elders could start yammering away in outrage. And sure enough, just as the door closed, the old coots began screaming and yelling behind him, their muffled shouts making him laugh as he felt like a free man.
Somehow, he even swore that he heard a woman fainting behind him.
"My King!"
Nathan turned to his side, noticing that Decan had been waiting for him with Aspen outside the room this whole time.
"I assume that you both heard that?" Nathan asked.
"We sure did," Decan chuckled, his hand already on Aspen’s shoulder as he congratulated him. "And Aspen here is already up to the task. Isn’t that right?"
"I-I’ll do my best," the new king bowed to him. "I’ll make sure to uphold your standards."
"You’ll do great, Aspen," Nathan chuckled. "Now go in there and pacify your new subjects."
Nodding, Nathan watched as the new king strutted back into the room he just left. Immediately, the noise inside quieted down, surely due to Aspen taking control of the situation as he heard shouting ensue behind the door.
"What’re you going to do now?" Decan asked.
"Now? I have some apologizing to do," Nathan sighed. "So if you’ll excuse me, I have a plane to catch."
