Chapter 321: Not a Pretty Sight

Boris was grinning madly as Danos finally blew a gasket. The bastard was paling, his breaths coming out in pants as he stood up from his seat. Danos’s desperate flailing had even made the audience murmur amongst themselves, his behavior clearly exhibiting just how suspicious his claims were.

"The prosecution will be seated!" the judge bellowed out, his gavel thudding against the table in front of him. "Damnable evidence has been presented. If the prosecution has no way of proving these allegations false, then the court will have no choice but to dismiss Elder Danos’s allegations made against defendant Boris."

"Is... is this it?" Boris couldn’t help but ask.

"Not yet," Nathan whispered beside him. "Keep you cool. He’s making unforced errors."

"But I didn’t do any of the sort!" Danos insisted once more, his throat practically bulging with veins as he screamed. "T-Those documents are obviously forged!"

As if on cue, one of Boris’s lawyers presented the judge with a hard copy of one of the many documents they had as evidence. Boris smirked in satisfaction as he saw Dano’s eyes follow the papers, his distraught look saying everything that he was thinking as he visibly gulped.

This was it. He was a dead man walking.

"Oh... Oh my..." the judge gasped, his fingers almost shaking. "W-Why... Baillif!"

Boris grinned as the court’s executor walked into the room. This was it. They had one.

"Based on the defense’s evidence, there is no chance in the world that would make Danos retain his credibility," the judge bellowed out in obvious anger. "Even if these papers are falls, there are simply too many of them to ignore. I move that the trial against Boris be suspended until these allegations against Danos are cleared up-"

"No! There’s no way that-"

"Silence!" the judge righteously yelled at Danos. "You will be held in contempt of court if you throw out more baseless attacks against the defendant!"

Boris crossed his arms as he gave Danos a piercing glare. Both him and the Elder crossed eyes for a brief second, the raw fear in the older man’s eyes making him chuckle maliciously at what was to come for his adversary.

As if responding to Boris’s provocation, Danos quickly turned to the judge and complained. "Y-You see?! This is all a trick! Boris is trying to trick you all into believing him!"

"He’s finished," Nathan scoffed. "Nobody questions the judge."

Sure enough, the judge had indeed not taken kindly to the Elder’s words. "Enough! Even if these allegations are false, it is clear that you are no longer credible enough to be a key-witness!"

"And that’s the end of this farce," Nathan chuckled. "This trial is over."

"Guards! Arrest this man for contempt of court!"

In a flash, a considerable number of men streamed into the courtroom, all of them converging towards Danos’s location as they moved to subdue him.

"N-No! It won’t end like this!"

"What the..."

Boris blinked as he watched Danos move. Almost as quickly as he had been discredited, the disgraced Elder moved to the stands, his arms wrapped around- "Lyne?!"

"S-Stay back!" Danos cried out, in his hands a hidden dagger he had pulled out from under his robes. "Let me go, or this girl gets it!"

"My King," Boris growled, his anger rising with each second that passed. "Do I really have to hold myself back?"

"Not yet," Nathan growled. "Not until the judge doles out his sentence for this."

Gritting his teeth, Boris gripped the sides of the table in front of him until they cracked. His eyes were glued solely onto his mate, his ears waiting impatiently for the old judge to finally do his job.

"No more!" the judge declared, anger turning into a rage as he stood up. "Clearly, this act has more than proven that the evidence levied out against you are true! I hereby sentence you to death!"

"Let’s go."

Without any prompting, Boris moved. Behind him, his king followed, acting as his backup as he quickly closed the distance between him and his mate.

"Boris?!" Lyne cried out, her arms visibly straining against the werewolf. "What’re you-"

"Lyne, duck!"

At his callout, his mate did as she was told. Danos, clearly caught off-guard, didn’t even have time to voice out his surprise as Boris’s fist impacted right at his skull.

"AGHHH!!!"

Danos flew right into the wall, a small crater forming where he landed from the force of the blow. Looking at his fist, Boris shook it clean, bits of the bastard’s blood still clinging to his skin as he clicked his tongue in disgust.

A terse silence blanketed the room, the authorities checking on Danos to see if he was still alive. Beside Boris, Lyne had stood by, her annoyed glare telling him that she was more furious than scared at what had just happened.

"Your honorable judge," the bailiff called out after having inspected Danos. "He’s dead..."

And just like that, an invisible tension had been lifted. Again, Boris found himself looking at his fist, wondering just how hard he had punched the bastard to instantly kill him.

"Truly?" Lyne whispered. "He’s dead."

"Indeed," the bailiff replied. "His skull had been shattered. It’s not a pretty sight."

"Defendant Boris, you have done well in executing this court’s will," the judge nodded. "For your efforts, as well as with the prosecution’s dissolution, I hereby declare you as a freeman."

Boris didn’t know what to say. Taking a deep breath, his eyes roamed towards Danos’s unmoving body before he scoffed. "Thank you, your Honor. And dare I say, good riddance to that man."

Before long, the trial had been wrapped up, and Boris stepped out of the courtroom with Lyne in tow, his chest feeling lighter than it had ever been in years.

"Thank you for saving me back there," Lyne breathed out. "I don’t know what I would’ve done if you hadn’t come in there."

"I’m sure you had it all figured out," Boris chuckled. "You don’t even look that shaken up from it."

"Perhaps," Lyne vaguely responded. "Still, this does mean that I’ll have to uphold my end of the bargain."

Boris blinked at her. "Truly?"

"Yes," Lyne nodded, the faint smile on her face complimenting her blush. "I’ll give it a try."
