Chapter 296: Piggyback Ride

At Moon Clan Territory

Night came, and as Raine expected, Nathan was unable to come see her in person. He would simply have to make do with a quick video call with her in his free time, at which she tried her best to understand the situation.

Still, Nathan had promised that he would come home to Moon Clan early tomorrow since their wedding ceremony would be held at night.

Also, Lyne had sent her a report on Nathan’s whereabouts, seeing as she was also acting as his secretary while Aspen held the role of his assistant inside the Convel Society.

Even though Raine was inside the Moon Clan territory, she still kept herself busy in managing the family business, the Yue Group, by having business video call meetings with her directors.

After one such meeting had ended, Raine found herself sitting on the sofa where Draki was sitting and watching television. She lazily hugged the wolf, snuggling up to its fur as she murmured, "It’s only you and me now, Draki... Tell me, what should we do to kill this boredom? I’m so tired of sleeping already..."

Draki only let out a soft growl, making Raine sigh deeply as she replied, "Maybe I should just call off the wedding ceremony... Let’s just go away and leave Nathan without him knowing?"

She stared out at the balcony, the good weather outside giving her some kind of idea as to what to do with her life. Standing up, she told her wolf, "Come now, Draki. Why don’t you fetch father Lark? Let’s have a stroll and get some ice cream. I’ll be waiting outside..."

Draki howled in seeming reply before it quickly jumped off the sofa. Watching the overgrown dog leave, Raine couldn’t help but smile. She liked the wolf her daughter Aire gifted her. Draki was such a genius wolf sometimes, one who easily understood her even if it was only her whimpers. Her daughter had probably trained it well before she left them.

"Aren’t you great, my cutie?" she lovingly whispered to her unborn baby as she caressed her stomach. "I can’t wait to finally have you in my arms..."

Soon enough, Draki howled in return, and Raine bore a bright smile upon seeing her father walking toward her. As usual, he wore the same gloomy outfit with the hood on it, which was kind of repetitive for her taste. Raine would just love to shop for her father one of these days, but she was still unable to go out of their territory just yet.

Quickly hooking her arms around his, she smiled as she said, "Let’s have some ice cream at aunt Ester’s residence."

"I also want to buy you some nice new clothes instead of having you wear these boring hoodies," she mumbled as she removed the hood off his head. "You don’t need to hide your handsome face anymore."

Looking him in the eye, as usual, her father simply had a blank expression on his face, completely devoid of any kind of emotion.

"You look so young, Father. You probably stopped aging since the time you’ve been cursed," Raine postulated before she let out a small jest. "I bet I’ll look older than you in the coming years..."

Still, as much as she tried to hide it, her cheerful eyes clouded over with sadness at her father’s current state. Being devoid of all emotions was just too tragic. She should really make a move in helping her father break this curse, but unfortunately, getting a lead about it was way too difficult, especially when she didn’t even know where to start.

"Will you go to Country A with me?" Raine absently asked as the two of them walked outside the mansion’s vicinity. "I’m planning to leave the day after my wedding ceremony, and I want you to accompany me. But if you don’t want to, then I won’t force you, of course."

"I will come with you, Raine. I will protect you," he plainly answered.

Raine smiled. At least now, he was addressing her by name upon her request instead of using Princess all the time.

"Alright then. I’m sure we’ll have a lot of fun together," Raine excitedly murmured. "Let’s take advantage of that time to bond some more..."

The two continued walking. After some time though, Raine started regretting the fact that they even walked their way to Aunt Ester’s residence in the first place. It wasn’t far from the mansion since it was only a few blocks away, but she easily felt so tired that she had no choice but to stop midway.

Seeing her stop, Lark and Draki also stopped. Her father stared blankly at her as if waiting for her to speak.

"Ah, Father, you’re killing me here with that robotic aura of yours," Raine joked out. "Can you please turn around and kneel? Give this daughter of yours a piggyback ride?"

Chuckling, she even fluttered her eyelashes ever so tenderly at her father, who just plainly gave her a nonchalant look before he turned around and kneeled down in front of her.

"Goodness, how will you meet your other daughter while bearing that cold expression," Raine snorted before leaning onto her father and wrapping her arms around his neck, her legs clinging onto his waist the moment he got back on his feet.

Clinging onto him, Raine couldn’t help but lean her head onto his broad shoulder. Her father felt warm, and She let out a heavy breath as she murmured, "I’m not sure whether to introduce you just yet to Mara, Father. I’m sure she’ll be happy to know you’re alive, but introducing you to her with you like this will be a very difficult task to do." She sighed, "She will surely ask me a lot of questions that I myself am not even ready to answer. So... what do you think we should do, Father?"

"I will do whatever you say, Raine," her Father plainly answered, making Raine heave out another frustrated sigh.

She closed her eyes and murmured, "Why don’t you help me find an answer for your curse, Father? Can you do that?"

"I will try my best," Lark answered.

Raine opened her eyes. "Next time, let’s play fun games, Father," she suggested. "Let’s do stuff a normal father and daughter pair would do. What do you say? Or am I too old for it now? Then again, are we too old to have a father and daughter moment that I’ve been deprived of since I was a child?"

Growing up, she had a set goal in her mind ever since she had the need to do so. So much so that she was unable to have the freedom to enjoy her life as a normal child. It was no wonder then that she had some kind of twisted mind. Thankfully, she was making some progress with her self-imposed rehabilitation, and she wanted to make full use of it. Wasn’t she just lucky to still have the men she cared for in her life up to this point; her mate... soon to be husband, and her biological father?

"What flavor of ice cream would you want, Father?" Raine asked with a giggle. "You see, aunt Ester has different ones inside her fridge, and we might get to have a good selection to choose from."

Apparently, her aunt Ester loved ice cream of different flavors so much that the older woman never ran out of stock inside her fridge.

"I will have what you give," Lark coolly replied.

Raine rolled her eyes at his response. "Ah, this is way harder than I thought it’d be..." she scoffed with a pout.
