Chapter 293: Starting to Care

Meanwhile, as Lyne dropped by at their princess’s private residence, she went on to grab a few more of her own things from her room, seeing as she would be staying in the Convel Society for a tad longer to monitor the situation there on their Boss Raine’s behalf. Making sure to grab a few of what she considered her essentials, she then promptly lock her door only to be surprised to see that Boris was leaning by the wall not far from her room.

"Finished?" he asked with a smile. "I came here to pick you up... if that’s alright with you, of course."

Taken off-guard, Lyne simply nodded, not even bothering to argue when Boris asked to carry her luggage. Silently, they made their way to the car, the awkward tension between them only growing more awkward the longer they sat side by side inside the vehicle. And as the car began moving forward, the stifling quiet seemed to stretch on for far longer than it should’ve. Lyne was naturally quiet, sure, but that didn’t mean that she didn’t want to have a good conversation with Boris.

The stalemate in silence continued until finally, as Lyne expected, Boris came and broke the dumb quiet that saturated the atmosphere.

"Looks like everyone will be very busy in the following days," Boris casually made small talk, occasionally sneaking glances at her as he spoke. "That’s not to mention our leaders’ wedding that’s about to happen in just two days’ time..."

"Right. It’ll be a very busy few days ahead," Lyne promptly agreed. "Your trial will commence tomorrow as well. Are you nervous?"

Boris shrugged. "Not really. We’ve long planned for this already," he sighed. "And besides, we’ve already gathered enough evidence in my favor to clear my name. Unfortunately, it’s not enough to bring Danos down along the way."

Lyne spared a blink as she caught Boris letting out another sigh. It wasn’t the first time she had noticed him doing such a thing. Lately, he had been sighing as often as he could for some reason.

"What’s wrong?" Lyne couldn’t help but ask. "I mean, what’s with the constant sighing?"

"Oh, that? It’s nothing," Boris waved her off before letting out another sigh. "It’s just that I was hoping that we can spend a bit more time together. But apparently, the trials will take place throughout the day, maybe even a couple of days if it got down to it."

Lyne chuckled at his exasperation. "Hey, it’s not like we can’t eat dinner together, Boris," she pointed out. "I mean, we can still be together by then."

She was a boring person, and she actually enjoyed Boris’s company enough that she didn’t see any harm in them having dinner together. Having him around balanced out the blandness in her life, she found, and she wouldn’t mind being with him if only for a few moments.

Boris stared at her and murmured, "Are you sure?"

Lyne nodded with a smile before turning her head back to the road. She didn’t need to- "Boris!"

At her warning, Boris was quick to step on the brakes before quickly stretching his arm in front of her, making sure that she wouldn’t hit anything from the sudden deceleration. With his quick thinking, the car came to a stop, the seatbelts doing their job as they got rocked in their seats. All the while, the small dog that strayed into the road was left unharmed, slowly trotting away like nothing even happened.

It was only a good thing that there were no cars behind them.

"Are you alright?" Boris worriedly asked.

"Y-Your hand..." she weakly murmured, her face going red at their current position.

It was only then that Boris realized that his hand was currently on one of her breasts.

Quickly, Boris moved his hand out of the way, murmuring out an apology with an awkward smile. "I-I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to- I promise I would never do that on purpose!"

Even as he apologized, Lyne was practically burning from embarrassment with how much he was trying to apologize. Turning to him with a frown, she hissed, "What?"

Somehow, she felt offended enough that she unknowingly looked at her breasts. Sure, she was well aware of the fact that she wasn’t blessed with huge tracts of land in her chest, but hers weren’t even that bad.

"I mean, not that I don’t want to touch and hold your breasts right now, but this time is really an accident..." Boris explained further. He probably picked up on her reaction based on how much she stared at her chest with snapped eyebrows

"Stop it already," she whispered out, her tone taking on a bit of calm as she kept her gaze on her window instead. "Let’s just go."

Letting out a small breath, Lyne decided that she was done with his shenanigans. She felt so weird for some reason, but she couldn’t explain exactly why that was the case.

Soon enough, the car moved forward, and once again, there was another layer of silence between them. And like before, it was broken by the same man after a good while of peace.

"Are you still mad?" Boris suddenly asked.

"I’m not mad, just embarrassed..." Lyne confessed, followed by a sigh. She then added, "I bet you’re already running out of patience with me, Boris. I’m sorry if I’m being naturally stiff."

"I’ll never run out of patience for you, Lyne. You’re my mate, and I’ll wait for you no matter how long it might take for you to accept me," Boris wholeheartedly replied, his determination oozing out in spades. "Also, I won’t stop trying to make Danos pay for the crimes he committed against your father. With the King’s help, we’ll definitely bring him down soon enough."

A beat passed, and Lyne finally turned her head to him as she said, "There’s no need to push things through, Boris. Don’t do anything that might cause any harm to your prospects of going back to the Convel Society." She shrugged as she insisted, "Besides, I’m not in a hurry... Taking revenge will actually not bring my father back to life, and that the living is much more important than the dead. So promise me that you won’t do anything reckless while you’re back at the Convel Society."

At her words, a beat passed before Boris moved the car to the side of the road, stopping their journey for a while.

"Why are we stopping?" Lyne asked.

Instead of replying, Boris gently grabbed her hand and held them firmly, gently squeezing them in between his own. The longer it held, the more she couldn’t deny that the simple gesture was giving her an electrifying feeling in her nerves. Boris’s touch had an effect on her body, and she was liking the warm feeling of his hands sandwiching hers in between them.

"I promise that I’ll work hard, and I will definitely not do anything reckless, Lyne," Boris sincerely spoke out. "I’m honestly just happy right now since I can feel that somehow, you’re starting to care for me. Am I right?"

Lyne was caught off guard by that direct line of questioning. She gulped, her throat drying up as she was rendered speechless. Meanwhile, Boris had a roguish smile on his face as he gently raised one hand, gently kissing it in the knuckles before finally letting it go.

"I’ll take your silence as a yes, Lyne," Boris enthusiastically stated before he stepped on the gas, driving their car back on the road once more.

Blinkingly, Lyne straightened her back as she bit her inner cheek. Boris was right... She was starting to care for him, and she wondered when it even started.
