Chapter 287: I Told You So
At Convel Society.
"Ugh..."
Raine groaned as she sat up from her bed. Waking up feeling rather nauseous, she didn’t know what was happening to her as she held her head in her hand.
"What the hell..." she swayed from where she sat, her stomach feeling queasy as if she was having a hangover. "We didn’t... drink last night, right?"
As if hearing her, Nathan sat up behind her. Having also just woken up, the worry and confusion on his face were evident as he answered her question. "We had a bit of wine, but that’s it."
"Huh..."
Somehow, Raine didn’t know whether or not to believe him. They could get rather crazy whenever they were alone, and she wouldn’t put it past themselves that they’d get absolutely hammered before going at it like rabbits. And that was to add to the fact that there was the usual soreness in her core...
"You okay?"
"I’ll be fine," Raine mumbled, forcing herself to stand up despite her stomach fighting her every step of the way. "I’m sure this’ll pass."
"Even if we drank last night, aren’t you immune to poisons anyway?"
Raine stopped at that. "Huh... Maybe this is something else then..."
As if to add to his words, she suddenly felt her stomach churn as her face went green. At that point, she already knew that her throwaway line had some merit to it.
"BLEUGH-"
"Raine?!"
Pre-emptively, she hurriedly got up from bed and ran inside the bathroom. From there, she proceeded to let out whatever it was that she ate from last night.
"U-Ughh... BLEUGH!!"
"What’s wrong?"
Raine didn’t notice when Nathan had arrived behind her, but she appreciated his presence as she felt him rub her back as she continued vomiting.
"I-I don’t know," Raine weakly muttered. "I feel sick to the stomach for some reason... It’s like... it’s like it’s going upside down.... BLEUGH!!"
She couldn’t even finish her thoughts as she let out yet another portion of last night’s dinner. She felt miserable, and there was no telling what was wrong with her if she wasn’t actually hung over.
"This won’t do... Let’s get you to the hospital right now!" Nathan worriedly said.
"Wha- H-Hey!"
He didn’t even wait for Raine to reply as he quickly scooped her up in his arms. She wanted to at least try and protest, but her nausea sapped her of her strength as she simply coiled her arms around his neck in an effort to keep herself from falling off.
"We’re not taking any chances, Raine," Nathan firmly stated, refusing to give her even a shred of a leg to stand on as he carried her to the nearest car. "If this is something we don’t know, then at least we’ll know as soon as we get there."
"Y-you’re not even making any sense- BLEUGH-"
"Raine?!"
Her eyes wide, she forced what little amount of stomach acid she had left in her system back down her throat. There was no way that she’d ever vomit inside a car. Not if she could help it.
"F-Fine," she relented, her breaths coming out as pants as she weakly strapped her seatbelt on. "Take me to a doctor..."
Finally getting her approval, Nathan tensed up as he focused on getting them on the road. The quick pace that they were setting almost made her want to throw up again, but she miraculously managed to keep her guts from spilling out by the time they got to the hospital.
"We’re gonna have you looked at, okay?" Nathan worriedly reassured her as he stopped the car. "You’re gonna get better."
"Nathan, you’re overreacting-Wha!"
Once more, Raine didn’t even manage to put up a fight as she felt herself getting carried into the emergency room. Looking up at Nathan’s face, he could see the panic setting in even as he talked his way to the front of the line.
"Please! She’s-"
"Y-You’re being rude," Raine pouted despite her nausea still making her face green. "W-We can wait like everybody else..."
"But-"
"Nathan," she insisted, somehow managing to make her stare even more terrifying than usual. "We’re waiting."
Torn, Nathan looked back up to the nurse he was just borderline harassing. With a hesitant sigh, he finally backed down.
"We’ll wait for our turn then," he mumbled out, almost petulantly like a child who lost.
"Don’t worry, sir. We’ll be able to look at your wife shortly after."
"Wha-"
"You hear that?" Raine weakly teased out. "Your ’wife’ will be looked at soon enough. Stop overreacting."
Raine barely managed to chuckle as she watched Nathan’s face fall in defeat. "Thank you."
Turning away from the nurse, he carried her all the way to the nearest empty bed and laid her there. And it wasn’t even long before a doctor eventually came to look at her.
"See? You’ve barely managed to put me down..." Raine teased out.
"What seems to be the problem?" the doctor asked.
"She suddenly felt dizzy and threw up this morning," Nathan told the doctor about her symptoms. "She’s never had a hangover before, so this is something new."
"I see," the doctor nodded. He then turned to Raine and asked, "Are you two sexually active?"
"Wha-"
"Y-Yes..." Raine promptly replied, her mind already having pieced together what’s wrong with her the moment the doctor asked her the question.
"We’ll run a few tests then," the doctor smiled. "I’m sure you’re wife will be fine soon enough."
"Wait-"
"Thank you," Raine smiled, having felt the prick of the needle pierce her skin to draw her blood. "Take your time... Don’t get it wrong..."
"Of course, miss."
And with that, Raine couldn’t help but smile as the medical staff left her bedside. All the while, Nathan seemed to be at a loss for words as he silently fumed.
"They didn’t even think there’s anything wrong with you," he grumbled, his panic still evident in his tone.
"You’re just not thinking straight, Nathan," she weakly laughed. "Take a deep breath and think..."
Heeding her advice, she could only roll her eyes as the dawning realization finally showed itself in his expression.
"So... Wait... You think?"
"We’ll find out soon enough," she scoffed.
A few minutes passed, and sure enough, the tests came out positive.
"Congratulations," the doctor smiled. "Your wife is pregnant."
Despite the smiles, the one on Raine’s face was the smuggest as she turned to Nathan and said, "See? I told you so."
