The Untamed: Game of Hearts -
Chapter 286: No ifs… No buts…
Chapter 286: No ifs... No buts...
"Talk to me about what?" Davin interrupted with a smile, even though he had already heard what they were talking about from a distance because of his enhanced hearing as a vampire.
Raising an eyebrow, he looked at the girl named Luna. She was pretty and quite interesting to boot... And yet those innocent icy blue eyes of her lacked vibrance... devoid of any emotions for a young lady like her. Strange...
Luna was about to open her mouth to speak when her father suddenly stood up from his chair and burst out, "Lark?!"
Davin sighed as he quietly watched the touching scene before him. Even though he was a vampire, that didn’t mean that he didn’t have any humanity left in him. He still felt touched at seeing the reunion between the two brothers. It was a pity to think that only King Arvin was crying while Randall stood before him like an unfeeling post. The latter wasn’t even hugging his brother back.
"You should know that he’s no longer the brother you used to know," Davin reminded. "He was cursed..."
Being a good host, Ester quickly guided King Arvin and his brother to sit beside one another. Davin then sat opposite them. All eyes were on him, waiting for him to further explain the situation.
"Ava is a fallen angel that Prince Lark accidentally killed. His curse is to live life as an immortal, unable to remember his own self and the people he loves and cares for," Davin explained, making King Arvin gasp as he sobbed even more. "Unable to love... Not without the woman dying on him... That’s the curse..."
"Have you at least found out why Lark’s twins got separated?" King Arvin weakly inquired.
"Not yet, but Nathan was able to see how the youngest twin, Raine, was left with her mother. That was when the now-deceased Marcus got a hold of her," Davin answered at length.
"Lark was about to kill Marcus at the time, but Ava unexpectedly covered for the former using her own body... That was how Lark accidentally killed his wife, the fallen angel. And because Ava protected Marcus, with the curse within him starting, Lark only followed Marcus’s words and no one else. Since then, he lived his life as Randall, Marcus’s right-hand man from the shadows. It was like he was bound to stay with Marcus till death finally pulled them apart..."
"Oh God... My brother. My poor brother Lark..." King Arvin lamented. "Is there a way to lift this curse?"
Davin heaved out a long deep sigh as he murmured, "We’re not sure, but we’ll look into this, especially since King Nathan’s wife is also involved. "Also, please do be more patient. There are currently a lot of pressing matters we need to wrap up first, including matters within the Convel Society."
"I understand. We’ll try our best from our end to look into it," King Arvin stated as he wiped away the tears from his eyes. He thought he was already over it, but the elder just couldn’t help himself as he burst into tears at seeing how his brother was acting like a statue, devoid of any emotion whatsoever.
It was a heartbreaking scene to behold that it took them a while to calm down. An hour had almost passed before they finally started to have dinner.
Sitting in front of his plate, Davin was silent as he simply observed and listened to the casual talk from the elders. He was also aware of how Luna would occasionally sneak glances at him every once in a while.
Soon enough, the dinner was over, but his grandmother, together with Randall and King Arvin continued talking in regards with Randall and the twins. It was yet another matter once it came to the man’s daughters, Raine and Mara.
"Uhm... Excuse me..." Davin looked up once he heard Luna’s voice. Standing in front of him, she asked, "Can we talk somewhere?"
Davin looked at the elders, noting that they were still too busy for them to even notice if they were absent. Standing up, he replied, "Alright, follow me."
With a nod, Luna followed him to the balcony. Davin then signaled her to sit opposite of him, and she did.
"My father is actually looking for a man that he could trust me with," Luna began. "A marriage of convenience, he says, and he’s considering you to be that man. However, Aunt Ester just told us that it wasn’t for her to decide. Uhm... I know this is too sudden, but do you think you can marry me?"
Davin fluttered his eyes ever so slowly, controlling himself to not laugh at seeing the serious and intense look the Sun Clan Princess was currently giving him.
"You’re eighteen, right?" Davin questioned. "Do you even know how old I am?"
Luna shook her head.
"I am thirty-three, darling, almost twice your age..." Davin revealed with a seductive smile. "And who knows how many more long years I have to live since I’m already immortal. A few more decades? Centuries? I’m not human, you see, but a vampire... Are you aware of that fact?"
To his surprise, Luna’s lips stretched wide. That caught Davin off-guard.
"I know. That’s why my father chose you in the first place," Luna smiled. "You’re honestly at the top of his list when it comes to husband candidates."
Davin’s eyebrows creased. "And why is that?"
"Simple. It’s because you’re powerful," Luna said with her sweetest smile.
’How pretty,’ Davin thought as her dimples appeared whenever she would smile or stretch those lips. Still, she was smiling, but those eyes of hers really bothered him. Did it just twinkle? But it quickly disappeared, showing another lack of vibrance. ’Intriguing...’
"Hmm... So you want to use me in the power struggles within Sun Clan?" he directly asked with raised eyebrows.
Luna smiled once more as she shook her head. "No. It’s just to make sure that I’ll remain in the world of the living while my father is still breathing. Many will try to end my life, and I’m currently powerless against them," she scoffed.
"Right now, I don’t even know who my enemies are. No one could be trusted inside our Clan according to my father, and I don’t want to break his heart in his last days by him pitying me. So please marry me till I get strong enough on my own to handle my own Clan."
"Wow, you really want me as your shield, huh..." Davin chuckled. "Hmm... It depends on what I will get in return, Princess Luna. You see, my services aren’t free. How about you come up with a list of things you can offer me and come back once you have it? Let’s see if it will convince me enough to marry you."
Davin taunted her with a devious grin. He was rather amused, seeing how the Sun Clan princess looked unintimidated by him despite his demands.
"I have no need to list them," Luna plainly stated. "Just tell me what you want for you to agree on this marriage. I will do everything in my power to see them done. No ifs... No buts..."

Note: Davin will have a separate book entitled "His Immortal Heart". It will be published at PATREON first for those who wanted to read it in advance. Then the book will join another available NovelFire contest that would fit the theme. Thank you...
