Chapter 268: Picking A Fight

After the debacle that was them looking through the past and uncovering all the mysteries, Nathan decided that it was time for him to see the woman of the hour.

"You’re really going to check on Raine right now?" Davin asked as he trailed behind the King. "I thought you’re gonna let her grieve in silence?"

Nathan promptly replied, "Plans change, Davin. This is something that shouldn’t be put off lest we actually forget to inform her in the first place." He then sighed, "It’s gonna happen one way or another. We might as well rip the band-aid off now."

"Fair enough," Davin shrugged. "Still, how do you think she’d take the news?"

The King merely hummed in response, "I don’t know. My memories of her are hazy at best and absolutely nill at worst. If anything, I could only hope that she wouldn’t do something drastic enough that it’d undermine both of our positions of leadership."

After all, the woman was still grieving. Who knows what she’ll do once she got their information. Would she fly off the rails and go berserk? Or would she just sink into herself and knock herself out of commission for even longer? It hurt to think of such scenarios, but he knew himself that he was simply being realistic.

"She’ll probably just be fine with it," Davin chuckled. "Raine’s pretty tough. She might not be at the moment, but anything that isn’t too life-threatening will probably be dusted off like it’s nothing."

"I could only hope that’s the case then," Nathan nodded. "We have more than enough problems to think about right now. The last thing we need is for another loose end to pop up and make our lives miserable."

Walking side by side, Nathan and Davin continued on their journey towards Raine’s private residence. They weren’t stopped by anyone, in virtue of their current status as the de facto ruler of the Moon Clan, but by the time they arrived at the Moon Clan Princess’s home, they were stopped by a very familiar figure.

"King Nathan?" Levi curiously asked, his body blocking the door to the residence. "What’re you doing here?"

"I’m here to see Raine," the King tersely responded. "Is she here?"

"Well, she’s still resting, you see," Levi vaguely replied. "Doesn’t want anyone disturbing her, is all."

Davin raised an eyebrow at the man’s answer, "I highly doubt that... You look like you’re hiding something."

"Huh? Why would I do such a thing?" Levi feigned innocence, his shoulders shrugging as he kept his body by the door. "It’s not like I’m trying to hide something or anything."

This time, it was Nathan that voiced his utter doubt about the situation. "You’re lying."

"No, I’m not," Levi denied, sweat now dripping all over his face. "Why would I lie?"

The King sighed at the pitiful display in front of him. "Look, we have some information pertaining to Raine’s past. It’s important that we relay it to her as soon as possible."

To their surprise, Levi actually looked pained as he kept his position, "W-well... I’m sorry, but the Princess isn’t taking any visitors right now."

Davin scoffed, "Okay, now that’s a blatant lie."

"Y-You misunderstand," Levi nervously stammered out. "She literally can’t take guests right now."

"Move," Nathan growled. "You’re testing my patience."

"I... I can’t, okay?" Levi pleaded. "It’s-"

Before the entire tense situation escalated, a faint ringing took the three out of their current focus. Nathan’s pocket vibrated, making him fish out his phone and answer the call.

"What is it?" the King growled.

"I-It’s Aspen, my King," the voice from the other line carefully whispered out. "We have a problem on our hands."

Hearing the gnawing dread in Aspen’s voice, Nathan’s back straightened at the slightest chance of a disaster waiting to happen. "What is it?"

"I...It’s Raine."

"What?" Nathan confusedly called out. "What’s she got to do with all this?"

"Well, she’s here..."

...

.....The air seemed to roar with tense electricity as the silence stretched out for who knows how long. By the sidelines, Davin and Levi could feel the air around them thicken as Nathan’s aura became heavier by the second.

"What do you mean, she’s there!" Nathan incredulously questioned. "She’s right here in the Moon Clan Territory!"

"M-My King, I’m telling you right now that she’s right here," Aspen urgently replied. "She’s picking a fight with everyone, and I’m doing my best to stop everything from coming to blows."

Nathan growled at what he was hearing. How could it be that the Princess was in two places at once? Unless... "Move."

"W-Wha-"

"Move!"

Not even bothering with pleasantries anymore, Nathan unceremoniously shoved Levi out of his way. With an annoyed look, the King stomped his way through Raine’s private residence, making a beeline for what she recalled to be Raine’s room.

Opening the door, the inevitable was finally revealed.

"There’s no one here."

Nathan grumbled in disbelief. He was expecting many things. Perhaps a grieving woman. Some sort of closure. Even an inevitable fight between him and whoever it might be that would take offense to his appearance. However, what he didn’t expect was absolutely nothing.

"No guards too..." This was bad... "Aspen?"

"Yes?"

"Keep the situation stable for as long as possible," Nathan commanded, his grip on his phone tightening with each passing syllable. "I’ll make my way there as soon as I can."

A brief pause lingered before Aspen finally responded, "Of course, My King."

Killing the phone call, Nathan clicked his tongue in utter annoyance. Cause of course Raine was going to try and possibly take revenge now of all time!

"So what’s the prognosis?" Davin asked, having caught up to his King in the duration of the phone call.

"Raine’s at the Convel Society," Nathan grumbled out. "She’s probably planning some sort of revenge on the people that killed her father."

"Which means Sasha’s up on the chopping block, right?" the vampire scoffed. "Why even care?"

Nathan rolled his eyes, "Because if Raine actually goes through with it, the war might just well be restarted."
