Chapter 267: The Curse
That night, Nathan and Davin finally arrived at the Moon Clan Territory. And almost immediately, the former went straight to Princess Ester’s residence to see Randall.
"Is he here?" he asked.
"He is," Ester informed him. I’ll send him down to the library."
"Thank you."
With a nod, Ester called for a helper to guide the two down to the library. As the two arrived, they waited for their man to arrive, and soon enough, Randall appeared. Unlike before, however, the man’s clothes were different now. Even the way he looked has changed somewhat.
"Oh, I guess Grandma did good with his makeover," Davin commented with a nod. It was him who suggested that she helped Randall go back to his old appearance as Lark Tai. Suffice to say, she did very well in that regard.
"Thank you, Grandson," Ester timidly commented from behind them.
Hiding his surprise at her sudden appearance, Davin kept his composure as she walked towards them. To be fair, he was honestly still adjusting to his newfound relationship with the grandmother he just met. The old lady was nice to him, and she would always approach him even if she just wanted a small chat. It was annoying at times, but the vampire knew that his grandmother just wanted to make up for all those years they lost together due to unfortunate circumstances.
It was nice. He had no hard feelings towards his grandmother, in all honesty. He truly understood her situation and why she had to do what she did back then. In the end, she had no choice but to fake his death and give him away to be alive somewhere away from her. But then...
Davin sighed at the thought. As soon as they met, the first thing his grandmother asked him about was how his life had been. And just as quickly, he lied so that she wouldn’t feel guilty about abandoning him. No one had to know about what he had been through except for Nathan and Kiran, and he fully intended to keep it that way with his grandmother. After all, what matters was the fact that they were reunited.
"I would’ve done more, but he’s still not talking to anyone. So I honestly don’t even know what’s wrong," Ester continued on with a sigh. "At the very least, he’s been obedient to everything I’ve asked him to do so far."
"Thank you, Princess Ester," Nathan commented with a smile.
"Please... I know it’s a bit awkward for now, but if possible, I’d like it if you addressed me as Aunty Ester," the older woman requested with a bashful smile.
"Sure, Aunty. Please feel free to address me as Nathan as well," Nathan replied with a reassuring smile.
Ester nodded at the kind gesture and she soon left knowing that the two men would need privacy with Randall.
"Please sit down, Mr. Lark," Nathan beckoned the man to sit in front of him, noticing how Lark just stood rooted in his place. "From now on, everyone here will address you as Lark Tai since it’s your real identity."
Merely giving them a nod, the man only looked at them with a blank expression as Nathan took it as his cue to continue.
"The Sun Clan will soon ask for your presence," the King added. "You must know that you’re always free to leave or stay within the clan whenever you want."
There was no response.
"Would you mind if I hold your hand, Prince Lark?" Nathan directly asked.
Without even flinching, Lark turned to him, meeting him in the eye before looking at Nathan’s open hand asking for his.
By the sidelines, Davin only observed. He didn’t know how to react to the awkwardness of the scene. Currently, Nathan looked like a fortuneteller that was asking for a client’s hand to read their fortunes. Oh, how he would’ve just loved to tease his uncle right now. But then, he knew how serious the situation currently was. He really shouldn’t interrupt.
As Lark put his hand into Nathan’s, Davin quickly grabbed the King’s other hand.
"Mr. Lark, please look at me?" Nathan asked.
At the King’s command, Lark raised his head to look Nathan in the eye. The King felt something like electricity shoot through his body, and the next thing he knew, he was already witnessing the past play out before his eyes.
Not wasting any time, he traveled into Lark’s past, witnessing firsthand how Lark and Ava loved each other to the point that they had to run away together so no one could separate them. They ended up living on an isolated island, thinking that no one could follow them or even know they were there.
Soon enough, Ava became pregnant and the two lived harmoniously for a good while. Unfortunately, it was then that something unexpected happened. Lark was hunting when he encountered a rogue werewolf. He tried his best, but the werewolf still managed to bite him. All the while, Ava unfortunately had to deliver alone while her love was still inside the forest.
"He became a werewolf... And a rogue one who still can’t control himself," Davin commented from the sidelines with Nathan.
The next thing they saw was that Lark was back in his human form. He was sprinting as fast as he could to look for Ava, but she was already by the shore when he saw them. Marcus was with his family, dragging them back with him just as he managed to find them.
"There’s still a missing piece here..." Nathan guessed to himself as he watched the scene unfold.
"I guess you need to touch the firstborn child and see what happens," Davin suggested. "I assume that baby with Ava was Raine. Ava probably gave birth while Lark was still in the forest. Someone snatched the first baby beforehand..."
"That was Mara," Nathan voiced aloud. "No wonder Marcus wasn’t aware that there was a twin..."
After which, a fight then happened where Ava had to put down her baby so she could stop the two from killing each other.
"Ava also loved Marcus. She didn’t want to see the man get hurt," Davin commented. "It’s most likely a brotherly kind of love though."
The scene developed, and Lark was now beaten up, with Ava now begging Marcus to stop. She tried striking a deal where she’ll come with him just so that he won’t kill her beloved. But just as it was about to be finalized, Lark suddenly transformed himself into a wolf-man hybrid and lunged towards Marcus. Unfortunately, Ava blocked the blow with her body, the hybrid unable to stop himself from moving forward.
"We should stop here," Nathan whispered, seeing the tears were running down from Lark’s eyes. The deed was done. He knew what the curse was now.
Removing his hand from the man, Nathanwhispered, "You can talk to us, but you chose not to. You are cursed to live life as an immortal, unable to remember yourself and the people you love and care for. Unable to love... Not without the woman dying on you..."
Davin’s face twitched at the revelation. "That sounds like hell..."
"He killed a fallen angel, Davin. Regardless of whether or not it’s an accident, it doesn’t matter anymore," Nathan sympathetically uttered.
"Will you tell Raine about all this?" Davin asked.
"Yes," Nathan nodded. "She deserves to know the ordeal her real father is currently facing, Davin. It’s not like it’s a choice that he made. I’m sure this man wants one thing and one thing only, and that’s to be with the people that he loves and cares for." The King then shrugged. "But then, I guess that would be impossible because he doesn’t even know who he is. There’s no point since he would simply not remember. He will only act on his duty, and that’s why he’s always following orders from Marcus. He thought that Marcus owned him after that incident. After all, Marcus was the only person that he saw after his curse took effect..."
