Chapter 208: Mate bond

Nathan let out a long breath to steady himself before entering the room.

"I’m coming in..." he informed the betas from his pack that he personally assigned to strictly secure Raine’s room. The betas slightly bowed their respect, and all left their post upon Nathan’s signal for them to go because he wanted his privacy with Raine.

Opening the door, Raine was still unconscious on her bed. One would think that she was in a coma, but according to their doctor, she was bound to wake up any minute now, and he wanted to be by her side the moment she opened her eyes.

Quietly, Nathan sat on the side of her bed. His eyes gleamed with love as he gently caressed her cheek, his gaze lovingly landing on her beautiful face. He then let out a sigh. As soon as her wounds were tended, he had personally cleaned her up and changed her outfit, cleaning up the blood that had soaked into her clothes from the fight.

Nathan closed his eyes, filled his lungs with air once, then stuffed it all out with a quiet grunt. He had been on the verge of losing himself the moment he saw a bloody Raine lying unmoving on the ground back then. If it had not been for Aspen, who had telepathically calmed him down by confirming that Raine was still alive and that Davin arrived in time to help her, then he would’ve probably already ripped apart all of the werewolves that had harmed her to pieces right then and there, regardless of the consequences afterwards.

Opening his eyes, he found himself checking the deep wounds she sustained from the battle. He frowned, noticing that not even a single scar was left on her skin. He blinked at the sleeping Raine, wondering what kind of human she was for her to be able to heal this fast. He was already aware that Raine was above any average human because of her extraordinary gifts. Still, he didn’t exactly know what she truly was. Not that it mattered to him, of course. Although, he was still curious enough to have some interest in knowing.

Nathan had already tasked Davin with investigating Raine’s origins. Hopefully, they’ll be able to find out more about it soon. Despite Raine’s disinterest in her own origin, a part of him still wanted to know more about the woman he loved.

"Ngh..."

His heart skipped a beat when he heard Raine stir. He had thought that he was ready enough for this, but there he still was; his lips quivering with nervous anticipation as he watched her slowly open her eyes. He had already prepped himself to be hated by her; to be scorned by what he knew would be construed as him ’betraying her’ as her initial reaction. He had a lot of explaining to do, but he somehow trusted that Raine would eventually understand, knowing her personality. However, despite all of his psyching himself up, he still couldn’t help but feel anxious at her reaction.

"...Tyrone?"

Raine whispered with a frown. She moved, trying to get up as Tyrone quickly held her and helped her rest her back on the headrest of the bed. After getting her bearings, she looked around, noting that she wasn’t where she expected herself to be. Looking at herself, she was currently wearing what seemed to be some random shirt that she quickly assumed to be from Tyrone.

Blinking, she once again looked at the man before her. Her eyes widened, finally noticing the crown perched atop his head. "You... You’re... You’re the King?"

Tyrone gulped. With trembling hands, he grabbed her hand and gently squeezed it as he whispered, "Can you please listen to my explanation first? I will tell you everything that you need to know. It’s a long story that I already told you before. But because of an incident caused by the power of the Voyager’s Watch..." He trailed off before gathering the courage to continue, "You... You lost some important fragments from your memories..."

Hearing his opening statement, Raine’s eyes narrowed as she gave Tyrone a stern look. But then she wanted to hear him out so she weakly whispered, "I’m listening... Tell me everything."

Tyrone let out a relieved sigh and didn’t waste any time as he began his narration. Raine was quiet for the entire time that he was talking. She didn’t interrupt him nor ask him any other questions. She simply listened to whatever he said, her intense gaze not even so much as straying away from him.

"It all started with the intention of deceiving you; keeping my enemies close, as the saying went..." Tyrone began. "I had wanted to keep it that way, but somehow, something inside me recognized that there was more to it. Somehow, I recognized your scent as belonging to that of my mate. To be frank, I honestly didn’t even believe in that kind of stuff before, so I didn’t acknowledge it the first time I felt the pull." He almost let out a chuckle, "I had thought that my hate and grudge for your father would be enough for me to suppress the strong feelings that I was starting to have towards you, but I’m wrong... Things just happened... Everything went to the wayside as my mind was consumed with only the thought of you. Heh... I guess I got so greedy that before I even realized it, it was already too late for me to stick to the plan and not let my emotions consume me."

Tyrone gave himself pause. He was getting more nervous the more he saw Raine not giving him any sort of reaction to his story. Giving it some time, he mentally prepared himself before continuing with his narration about Aire and the Voyager’s Watch, which included the change in their plans, as well as how he wasn’t truly aware of the fact that everything related to Aire in their memories would be wiped out. It was crucial that he explained how it wasn’t merely Aire’s existence that would be wiped like he had initially thought.

"By the time I found out about it... I was too late. You and your team were already attacking Convel Society..." Nathan regretfully concluded. If he happened to lose Raine because of that fight, Tyrone was willing to use the Voyager’s Watch in his hand to go back in time and save her, regardless of the ordeal he would face after.

A brief silence settled between them as Raine seemed to mull over what she just heard. After a few beats, Raine finally spoke, "Can I see the Voyager’s Watch?"

Hearing her soft and calm voice, Nathan quickly nodded and opened his palm, showing her the watch as it materialized into existence.

Seeing the object, Raine had a faint smile as she muttered, "To think that such a small object could hold such great power... It’s just sad that I can’t remember my supposed future daughter. I am curious how she looks. I’m sure she’s an adorable kid," She then looked at him, raising her hand to caress his cheek as she whispered, "You’ve been through a lot, Nathan."

He didn’t know why tears suddenly rolled down his cheeks as she spoke, but he still relished it all the same. She could finally call him by his real name, and it felt so good... It was like a piece of good and heartwarming music to his ears; comforting and invoking a strange sense of familiarity.

As Raine pulled him closer, he found himself burying his face into her chest. He then felt her gently stroking the back of his head as he spoke. "I thought I was going to lose you... I didn’t know what I would do if I lost you, and it just made me want to rush in there like a madman," Nathan confessed. "If something bad happened to you... I was already preparing myself to tear the whole society apart the moment I saw you lying on the ground covered in so much blood..."

"Well, I’m safe and sound now," Raine soothingly whispered. "I’m sorry I worried you."

Hearing her words, Nathan felt as if a heavy burden was lifted out from his chest. Raine never failed to amaze him. He was glad that she understood the situation well.

"Rest some more. We’ll continue talking later," Nathan gently murmured. "I need to leave for a while to attend to some important matters. But if you need me, you can just call me telepathically by thinking of me and calling me in your mind..." Nathan explained as he gently broke loose from the hug. Their eyes met, and Raine’s knitted brows already told him that she was confused.

Nathan gulped, his lips quivering as he met Raine’s intense gaze.

"I... I marked you..." Nathan whispered, almost coming out as a gasp as he bowed his head as low as he could manage it. "I had to... I’m sorry I did the Mate Bond without your consent."
