Chapter 207: Battle for the throne
After talking with Lyne and Boris, Nathan left them in the safety of the well-guarded room overseen by his trusted men from his Blue Moon Pack, one of the five main packs that formed the Convel Society. Aspen, the current Alpha of the Blue Moon Pack, who was also his cousin, was currently outside waiting for him.
He approached him in a professional manner. "King Nathan..." he whispered with a sigh.
Nathan could read his facial expressions, already knowing that the man would want to talk to him telepathically for privacy reasons.
[We need to have a concrete plan. I fear that this sudden turn of events will cause chaos to form inside the society.] Aspen advised through their telepathic link. [You’re already well aware that a few of our members are already against you sitting on the throne, correct?]
"Oh please..." Davin complained, feeling rather left out at the silent conversation happening before him. "Can we go into a private room and discuss the matter where I can hear it?!"
"I’ll meet you two shortly then," Nathan nodded, taking Davin’s words into account. "Go ahead into the secret room. I’ll just check on Raine."
Leaving the two alone, he then quickly turned and walked towards his room. It was where he had Raine detained, and was arguably the most secure room in the compound at the moment.
Seeing their king leave, Davin simply shrugged as he led Aspen to make their way to the secret room.
"He just marked her, you know?" the vampire informed his current companion as they walked through the hallway.
"What?!" Aspen burst out.
Davin let out a sigh as he simply stated, "Love will be the death of your king, Aspen. He might even abdicate the throne soon just for her, seeing as he already dropped his revenge scheme just to get into her heart..." He let out an amused chuckle as he continued, "So you and your pack better brace yourselves. Get ready for the inevitable Battle for the Throne. In truth, I know that he would be relieved if you were to replace him instead of any other mook that would only become a puppet for Danos or Lucio to control."
Aspen let out a frustrated sigh at what he just heard. He could still recall how he had first met Nathan. His Aunty, Alpha Nisha of the Blue Moon Pack, would often meet with her siblings outside the Convel Society compound since she was still not on the best terms with her father, who was then the current King of the Convel Society. And that was after she eloped with Arthur as well, who then was the current King of Moon Clan, despite her father’s strong disapproval.
Growing up, Nathan would always be with his mother whenever the three siblings would plan to have a secret get-together. Aspen would meet him at one of those soirees, and he and Nathan would eventually become close. Soon enough, they would practically almost grow up together, and through those secret gatherings, they would build a relationship akin to that of actual siblings.
That was, until one night. During the last gathering that they had, Aspen accidentally overheard his mother and Aunty Nisha talking. It was there that he heard that the latter was currently handling all of King Arthur’s personal savings and properties on behalf of the Blue Moon Pack. He and Nathan were both twelve years old at the time, and he didn’t truly grasp the gravity of the situation. After that night, however, the next secret gathering only had Nathan in attendance. Aspen could only gasp as he saw him with blood dripping all over his body...
Ever since that incident, the Blue Moon Pack had hidden Nathan’s identity and protected him with all of their might from whatever threats that might come from outside of the Convel Society. Nathan had forged a new identity as Tyrone Lopez, and he would then use all of the resources his father left him to plan his revenge against the Moon Clan. Despite all of his efforts, however, he still lacked the human resources against the Moon Clan. As such, the Blue Moon Pack suggested that Nathan should have more power and that he could only do so by claiming the Convel Society’s throne since he had the rights for it. After all, he was born with an Alpha’s blood running through his veins, making him eligible to assert his claims.
Aspen knew that Nathan was initially reluctant, and had even suggested that he should do it instead so that the Blue Moon Pack could benefit from both of their skills. Unfortunately, Aspen wasn’t as powerful as Nathan. His cousin might be a hybrid, but he was still way stronger than the average mutant. It was a phenomenon none of them could explain, and in the end, Nathan had no choice but to do it out of reluctant duty. He had to challenge Decan to stake his claim for the Throne...
"Hey."
Aspen was interrupted from his reminiscing as he felt Davin’s hand squeezing his shoulder.
If he was being honest with himself, Davin would admit that he was also dying to get his revenge against the Moon Clan. The Vampire Prince had a long storied history of his own. But luckily, Nathan found him just in time before his own personal hell could completely consume him in his own rage.
"You’re zoning out. Are you still not confident?" Davin casually asked.
"No... I was just thinking that it’s too bad that Nathan will have to leave us soon," Aspen dishearteningly sighed. "He’s a good and just ruler. The Convel Society would surely have a bright future if someone like him ruled it."
Davin chuckled, "You do know that he’s also the rightful ruler of the Moon Clan, right?"
"And so are you," Aspen countered.
"Well, scratch that, because ruling is not my forte," Davin joked with a clenched jaw. "And besides, all I want is to get justice... justice that my family and I deserve..." He then, with his stoic expression, turned to Aspen and said, "So get ready to be the next King once my dear Uncle chooses to leave the Convel Society. Don’t worry. He’ll be wrapping things up properly before leaving, making sure there won’t be any hindrances blocking your way."
Aspen frowned at the vampire’s words, knowing full well that the man was deliberately teasing him with his poker face.
A few minutes of walking later, the two finally entered the library in Nathan’s private residence inside the Blue Moon Pack Territory. Walking inside, Aspen opened the secret door that would lead them to Nathan’s secret underground haven. Looking back, the three of them would often hold confidential meetings in this place, together with their sworn confidants.
Sure enough, Elder Decan was already inside the room by the time they arrived.
"She hit you badly," Davin teased as Decan walked towards his seat, a bit of a limp slowing the elder’s gait.
"Yeah, it’s Nathan’s fault... He should’ve inquired more about that freaking Voyager’s Watch and made a proper plan beforehand," Decan scoffed. He thought that everything had been delayed and that Nathan had already explained the plan to Raine... But then, the girl suddenly lost her memories of every one of vital importance as Tyrone summarized to him telepathically as soon as he rescued Raine. All because of the Voyager’s Watch. It was too unexpected, and such an upheaval had turned all of their plans upside down, unleashing total chaos to the entirety of their moonlit world.
Decan had been supporting Nathan ever since the man became King. Nathan had asked him for help in clearing their society from its rotten and poisonous members like Danos, and the elder truly wanted to help so long as it would benefit their society. They were already well past planning for most of the eventualities, but then the attack threw a wrench into their carefully crafted designs. He tried his best not to fight with Raine and her team, sensing something went astray and there could be an explanation to it. He knew Raine was Tyrone’s mate and not Marcus’ real daughter because Nathan disclosed to him and Aspen everything not long ago before the attack happened.
"I’m worried about my daughter," Decan whispered.
"And that’s why we should end Marcus while we still can. Nathan won’t block our efforts as long as Raine won’t be involved..." Davin knowingly stated. "Don’t worry too much. They won’t hurt your daughter."
"Still, let’s wait for him to talk to the woman first..." Aspen commented, erring on the side of caution as he spoke. "In the meantime, let’s discuss some of the important matters at hand like how we can make sure to bring down Danos and all of his allies. He won’t let this slide and Boris will definitely suffer in the process of all this since Moon Clan won’t care about his safety. Our King Nathan can’t act in impulse as well in helping Boris out of this. We have to ensure Boris’s safety..."
