Chapter 202: I’ll keep you safe...

"A bluff, you say?" the mutant scoffed. "A cabal of men and women with empty guns... Sound familiar?"

She let out a scoff of her own as she slowly got into position, Sasha’s unmoving body getting closer to her arm’s length before finally pulling the trigger to her plan.

"Yes? And I guess you could say that I have a threat of my own."

Moving swiftly, Raine managed to snake her arms around Sasha’s neck, her empty pistol now aimed squarely at the mutant’s temple even as her aching body screamed at her to stop moving. According to Boris, that woman was of great importance so these mutants would surely not let anything bad happen to her.

"Put that gun down!"

"Or what?" Raine taunted. "You’ll kill me? Not before I blow this woman’s brains off, you aren’t."

Her breathing was getting ragged, her cracked ribs making it harder for her to breathe as she struggled to keep her bravado up. She just had to cut a deal with these people, to at least let her men go before she allowed herself to rest.

"You..."

"What? You’re growling at me now?" she mocked the mutant. "You werewolves truly are a product of your stereotype."

Her words had the desired effect of making them mad. Well, she didn’t actually want them to be mad enough to just go in and call her bluff, but it was more than enough for her needs to be heard.

"What do you want?"

"Negotiating, are we?" Raine tutted as she pressed the barrel of her pistol harder on Sasha’s temple. "How about you let my men go, and I won’t brain my hostage. Sound fair?"

Her vision was starting to swim. She was pretty sure that she had some internal bleeding in her lungs as she fought the urge to cough out blood. She couldn’t jeopardize her bargaining position, not when it would make it easier to call out her bluffs.

"Fine. We’ll let them leave," the mutant seethed as he grumbled to the other mutants. "Now, let her go."

Raine raised an eyebrow, "Not until I’m sure they’re all safe. I’m no amateur."

The mutant in front of her growled. Grabbing a phone from his pocket, he tapped on it a few times before showing her a picture of her men leaving the premises. She managed to account for Levi’s squad, but it was clear that Dylan’s team was missing a few key people in them.

"Happy?"

"There are people missing there," Raine pointed out, her breaths becoming more ragged as she spoke. "Two people, to be exact."

"Well, they’re not part of the deal," the mutant growled. "Let her go."

Raine almost chuckled, "And why should I? It’s your fault you let my men go that easily."

Well, that went better than expected. If she could manage to squeeze out more concessions out of these idiots, then maybe she wouldn’t have to resort to leaving herself to die in this place.

"We stuck to the deal!" the werewolf growled in anger. "Honor your word, human!"

"What is honor to a dead person, mutant?" Raine retorted, her arms weakening as she struggled to even hold up her unconscious hostage. "I won’t let myself die here. Now let my other two people go."

"Who?! You’re all that’s left!"

She blinked at his words. She was pretty sure that she never saw Lyne and Boris leave based on his picture. "And I’m saying that there’s still two more of my people here."

"Lies!"

Raine almost saw her vision fade as her pistol hand began to tremble. Where were Lyne and Boris? If she could just confirm that they were safe, then she could drop this charade and let herself collapse.

"I-I don’t think so..." she chuckled out, her tone weakening with each passing second. "Where are Lyne and Boris?"

"Boris?!"

The mutant’s outburst barely registered on Raine’s ears as she barely managed to hold on to her consciousness. She knew that there was no point in holding on anymore, but perhaps by buying enough time, the missing pair would manage to escape with their lives. She just had to play the sacrificial lamb, lying and bluffing her way through a deathtrap with nothing but her words and an empty gun.

"You know the man, right? Big? Scary? Hard to miss..." Raine whispered out, her voice starting to fail her. "H-He’ll probably be with... a very attractive woman too..."

This wasn’t good. She was starting to black out.

"Just let her go!"

"N-Never..."

Raine’s grip on her pistol finally slipped, her arm far too heavy for her to lift as she used Sasha’s body for support. She still had her arm around the mutant, so she still had a thin veneer of a threat to hang over her future captors’ heads if they tried anything funny.

"She’s fading. Can’t we just knock her out and be done with it?"

"No. She’s still dangerous even in that state."

Raine could only chuckle as she barely heard the mutant leader’s words. She was honestly flattered that they still thought that she was a threat when in reality, she could probably barely hold on to a cup of coffee at the moment. Still, it was more time on the clock for some sort of miracle to happen.

Oh dear... Now she was really starting to fade out of reality. She could barely see the vague shapes above her as she held on for dear life. Her fake arm lock was probably seen though already, and she now had no choice but to be taken away. She didn’t even know if she was the only one left. For all she knew Lyne and Boris were still there with her, somehow getting themselves captured for some rhyme or reason.

"Raine..."

Her ears perked at the vague sound of her name being uttered. It sounded... familiar... But it couldn’t be... Could it?

"I’ll keep you safe... Don’t worry..."

His words echoed through the fading void, and still they were somehow as clear as day. Were they even real?

"Tyrone..."

Her lips let off one last sound before Raine finally succumbed to her injuries. She had been captured, and she had no idea what was in store for her.
