Chapter 201: Their ticket out

The shadowy figure stood in front of her, a casual aura enveloping the man as he seemingly came to defend her. Not that Raine needed defending. She had the situation under control.

"You... What are you doing here?!"

The newcomer simply flashed a smirk as he held Sasha’s hand at bay, his claws digging into her flesh as he silently took the woman down. Raine could only watch in awe from where she was still lying down, her current movements slowing down as she quickly assessed the threat level of this stranger.

"You!-"

The other mutant couldn’t even finish his sentence when the stranger suddenly kicked him in the shins. Falling down, the mutant was then bashed right behind his skill, completely knocking him down on the floor.

The sound of gunshots echoed throughout the silence, Raine dumbstruck at what just happened.

"You might want to wrap this up," the stranger casually reminded. "Reinforcements are coming."

Raine blinked at his words, before seemingly coming back to reality as she finished breaking the one mutant’s leg in half, leaving her poor victim to bleed on the floor as she stood up.

"Thanks," she cautiously thanked, dusting herself off as turned to thank her mystery savior.

Raine blinked. To her surprise, the shadowy figure that had saved her had somehow disappeared. Raising her empty pistol, she strained to find any sign or hair of the man, only to come up short of even finding a trail to associate with him.

"Who was that..." she whispered to herself, only to shake her head as she remembered her mission. "No, I need to pull this through."

Regaining her senses, Raine focused herself back on the task at hand. Her fight might already be over, but the attack was still in full swing in front of her.

"Levi, status."

"We’re not doing too hot here, Boss," Levi’s voice filtered through the static, the sound of gunshots almost drowning out his message. "We’re running out of ammunition, and these guys just won’t go down for some reason! Either that or they’re magically popping out from thin air."

Raine clicked her tongue, "Dylan, status. How’s the barrier?"

"We’re doing pretty decent here," Dylan cooly responded.

She found herself blinking. The two reports she just got were highly conflicting. "Nothing unusual to report?"

"Beyond being a bit low on ammo, nothing so far, Boss," Dylan dutifully responded.

Raine found herself contemplating the current situation. Something wasn’t right. They were taking down more mutants than they had accounted for. And with that shadowy figure somehow managing to get past the barrier...

"Dylan, check the barrier. Something is definitely wrong. These mutants just keep coming in..."

Raine bit her lip as she positioned herself behind a nearby table. Her team shouldn’t be running out of ammunition for just ten mutants. Added in with the fact that Decan somehow got away, there was bound to be-

"Boss!"

Dylan’s alarmed tone brought her out of her thoughts as she quickly replied, "Is there a problem?"

"There’s a breach," her second team lead urgently reported. "We don’t know where it is, but we can repair it if we can manage to find the-"

A loud bang from a nearby wall cut off Dylan’s transmission as Raine was caught off guard by the explosion.

"They’re here! Kill the intruders!"

Looking up, Raine could only curse her luck as she spotted a handful of mutants streaming into the room. From the slowly waning sounds of gunfire, she could only assume that her teams were already severely lacking in firepower to repel this much meat from pouncing on them.

"Boss! More contacts!"

"More enemies closing in!"

Raine winced as her comms exploded with activity, Levi and Dylan respectively reporting the obviously dire situation that they were currently in.

"She’s in here somewhere... Marcus’s daughter is here!"

With her pistol completely empty, Raine had no choice but to lay low as she found herself deep within enemy territory. Even with her strength, she was still no match for sheer numbers.

"Boss, please advise."

Raine hissed with alarm as she heard Dylan’s thinly veiled anxiety through the comms. Levi wasn’t sounding in, but she was sure that he was also just waiting for her to call out their next move.

They failed... They injured most officers inside but the main targets... like the King and Decan... She still had her stand-by fighters outside but she did not want to compromise. Just with Decan’s words a while ago, she started having doubts that she felt that attacking Convel Society like this was...

There was a deep sigh from her end as she made up her mind.

"Call it off," she shook her head. "Get out, now."

"Way ahead of you, Boss," Levi chimed in through the comms.

Raine almost let out a chuckle at Levi’s response. Leave it to him to let out some levity in such a stressful situation.

"Boss, Boris and Lyne are still fighting Danos," Dylan reported.

"Tell them to disengage," Raine growled. "We’re getting out. Now."

"We can’t-"

"There you are, little princess..."

"Shit-"

Raine couldn’t even finish her swear as she suddenly found herself flying back to the same wall from earlier. To her horror, however, her injuries finally began to take their toll on her. Her body refused to respond, leaving her kneeling on the floor as she looked up at the mutant before her.

"Well now. It seems to me that you have no way out," the mutant gloated above her. "And don’t think that your little party managed to get out too. I have them surrounded in that pesky barrier of yours."

Raine held her tongue as her eyes darted across her surroundings. She was looking for something, anything that could somehow turn the tide of battle.

"I’m calling your bluff," Raine confidently replied, letting out a bluff as she found something that could possibly get them out of their botched operation alive. "I’m running this attack alone."

She gripped her pistol tightly as she inched her way to their ticket out of this mess. If she could play her cards right, she might still be able to salvage this.
