Chapter 195: Awake
At the Moon Clan Territory
Janus straightened his back after seeing the report on how efficient the Glawackus powder offshoot compound was for mutants. Excitedly, he called Raine and informed her about his progress.
"It’s ready. You can pick it up anytime you want," Janus said with a dream smile at the thought of seeing Raine once more.
"I’m sorry, Janus. What did I request for you to do again?" Raine asked from the other line.
"About the memory loss powder. Don’t you remember? You asked me to make something that’s also effective on mutants," Janus explained with a frown.
"Oh, I indeed needed that. There’s an emergency right now, but I’ll have Lyne quickly get that powder from you," Raine neutrally relayed. "As expected though, you’re really a genius, Janus. Thank you for your hard work," she praised.
A smile almost stretched towards Janus’s ears upon hearing the simple compliment from the woman he had longed to love and adore.
"Thank you. I will hand this to Lyne then. Please use it carefully. It can be used only once, Raine, and another batch won’t be ready till after ten years since the flower needed to add in the powder only blooms every ten years. And that’s on top of the fact that it’s extremely rare to find," Janus reminded.
"Noted. Thank you again," Raine thanked him again before eventually ending the call.
"Why would the princess need this kind of powder anyway?" Janus wondered with knitted brows. He didn’t dare ask the Princess since he would just often follow her instructions wholeheartedly, knowing that it would please Raine.
Standing up from his seat, he grabbed a bottle of wine from his cabinet. He basically lived inside the King’s holding area, personally looking over him. His room was adjacent to where the man’s capsule was. Looking around, he let out a long frustrated sigh as he consoled himself with the fact that his efforts would eventually be compensated handsomely by having Raine as his wife.
Comfortably sitting on the couch, Janus drank the wine he poured into his glass. He grabbed his mobile phone and began tapping and scrolling on the photos of Raine he had sneakily captured during the events she attended with him. She looked so perfect from every angle, his future wife whom he couldn’t wait to get married to.
While he was busy ogling his would-be wife’s pictures, he was interrupted by the sound of Lyne’s arrival. Casually, he handed the bottle full of powder to Lyne and asked, "Do you know who the princess plans on using it?"
She had a half-smile as she answered, "I’m not sure as well, Doctor Janus, but she will definitely put it to good use."
"Today is the attack on the Convel Society, correct? Please make sure our Princess is unscathed, yes?" Janus smiled before he pulled something out from behind him. "Also, wait... I personally made these for her. Can you tell her to wear these? This outfit has the best shield, protecting her vital organs from any sort of damage. I’m sorry that I’m only able to finish just one of these, but I’ll make sure that our team can manufacture more for the rest of the squad members. You see, I just finished the hundred-percent safety test of this sample last night," he explained.
"That’s so nice of you, Doc. I’ll definitely give this to Princess Raine and relay your concern for her," Lyne nodded. "Thank you so much for the hard work. Without you, our team probably wouldn’t have been able to keep up in putting down mutants."
Janus smiled as he watched Lyne leave. Walking back to his comfortable couch, he poured himself another glass of wine. He hated how he was incapable of fighting... He did try, but it was simply not for him and his weak body. And because of his weakness, all he could do was watch Raine from afar and be confined inside his laboratory for most of his life. He could only hope that Raine and her Moonlight Squad would succeed in their attack in bringing down the Convel Society once and for all.
He was in a deep stupor when he heard a sudden alarm from the capsule where the king was recovering. Moving fast, he rushed to the King’s capsule. He then instructed everyone to leave the room, no one questioning his orders as they filtered out that instant.
Janus was sweating hard as he read the vitals on the monitor. He gulped and murmured, "What is this? He’ll be waking up any minute now..."
He scratched his head, thinking if he should inform Raine about it or not. But then, King Marcus’s last words rang in his ears. It was his instruction to not tell anybody about his awakening, including his own daughter. King Marcus wanted everyone to think that he was still asleep, allowing him to observe how things had turned out during the time that he was in a coma. He wanted to see everything for himself first, and only then would he announce his return to everyone.
Janus managed to refrain from biting his nails as he stared at his phone. At this rate, he needed to follow King Marcus’s words above all. He might have a lot of authority, but the King still held the final say regarding his arranged marriage with Raine. As such, he should obey him, especially now that he could sense a threat in the form of Raine’s bodyguard, Tyrone. He had known Raine since childhood, and the Raine he knew would never disobey her Father no matter what. As such, all Janus had to do was to kiss King Marcus’s ass and he’ll be right as golden!
"I’m sorry, Raine..." Janus whispered to the wind as he stared at the capsule where the King was resting. He almost lost his breath when King Marcus’s eyes suddenly opened.
"He’s awake..." Janus helplessly whispered as he pushed the button to release all the tubes connected to the king, draining the liquid compound inside the capsule.
He then opened the capsule and greeted, "Welcome back, King Marcus."
The man stared at him for some time before a smirk appeared on his face as he whispered, "Thank you, Janus. It’s nice to be back..."
