Chapter 60: Game Over Again

The portal shimmered with an otherworldly hue, its edges crackling with raw energy. Both John and I stared at it, his anger momentarily replaced with unease. For once, it seemed like he wasn’t in control, and I’ll admit, that gave me a small amount of satisfaction.

Moments later, the same alien soldier from before stepped out of the portal, and John immediately reverted back to his human form, trying his best to hide his vampire identity. I’m not sure why he bothered hiding it, though, because it didn’t matter whether he was a human or a vampire—neither of these two races stood a chance against this alien soldier anyway. After all, the power gap between us and the aliens was simply too massive to begin with.

After stepping out of the portal, the alien soldier glanced around the torture room, feeling a twinge of admiration for what he saw.

Meanwhile, I could see John trembling in fear, his body shaking as if the very presence of the alien soldier was enough to strip him of his composure. I couldn’t say I was any different—fear and nervousness were settling in my chest, making it hard to breathe. As much as I tried to mask it, the sight of the alien soldier, so imposing and intimidating, sent a chill through me. It was as if every instinct screamed at me to run.

"I see..." The alien soldier leaned forward, his eyes narrowing. "So, you didn’t kill your teammates right away after all. Instead, you tortured them slowly until they died. Interesting." He stroked his chin, clearly intrigued by John’s actions.

John, visibly terrified, shifted uncomfortably and asked, "T-That’s not against the rules, right? I mean, it’s not like I had much of a choice anyway. The final trial only allows one person to advance, so, eventually... I would’ve had to kill them all, right?"

The alien stared at John, sending a chill down John’s spine. "Haha. You’re good, so don’t worry. What you do isn’t our concern anyway. But I have to admit, I’m very surprised. Out of all the superhumans we’ve met over these thousand years, you’re probably the most wicked one among them all."

"Well... I’m not exactly sure what you mean by that, but I guess I’ll take it as a compliment," John replied, feeling slightly embarrassed.

I glanced at John, and my first thought was, Is this guy out of his mind? Seriously, the more I think about it, the more I realize this bastard is truly sick in the head. I can’t believe he’s actually happy just because the alien called him the most wicked superhuman they’ve ever met. Yeah, this is too much—it’s like he’s proud of being evil or something, which is just crazy.

"Alright, enough with the chit-chat," the alien said. "The reason I’m here today is to let you know that we’ve successfully fixed the 5th trial. In other words, there’s no need for you to stay here in this floating city any longer. To proceed to the final trial, just head to the Blue Crystal Altar. There should be a portal ready right now for you to use, so you can proceed to the final trial right away."

"I see. Thank you for telling me that," John said respectfully.

"Alright, I’ll be on my way now," the alien replied, turning around and preparing to leave. But just before stepping into the portal, he paused and said, "Ah, one more thing. You have 24 hours remaining before the portal closes, so you’d better hurry and advance to the final trial. If you miss it, well... let’s just say it won’t end well for you."

With that, the alien let out a sinister laugh and stepped through the portal, leaving us behind alone once again.

After the alien left, John turned to face me, a slow smirk spreading across his face. His voice was cold and calculated as he spoke. "24 hours, huh? Well, that’s more than enough time for me to enjoy torturing you until I’m completely satisfied." A droplet of saliva formed at the corner of his mouth as he seemed to enjoy the thought of it.

I swallowed hard, panic creeping in. "W-Wait! I’ll tell you anything you want to know! So just ask me anything about vampires!" I blurted out, desperate to avoid what was coming.

Even though I knew someone like John wouldn’t keep his word, I figured it was still worth a shot. After all, if I could somehow gain his favor, maybe he might go easy on torturing me. Of course, there were no guarantees, but at this point, I had nothing to lose. All I could do was try my luck one last time and hope for the best.

"Haha! Now we’re talking! Very well, tell me then. Depending on your answers, if I’m satisfied, I might grant you a quick death. Of course, if you don’t meet my expectations, you’ll suffer even more. So, consider this advice: choose your words wisely." John said, his excitement clear, as if this were all just a little game to him.

Without further delay, John began asking me questions, and I gladly shared everything I knew about vampires.

...

...

After we chatted for a few hours, John finally seemed satisfied and said, "Alright! You know what? I’m fucking happy right now! To think you know so much about vampires—I’m genuinely impressed!" He grinned. Then, his tone shifted slightly. "Well, as part of our deal, I’ll grant you an easier death. But don’t celebrate just yet; it’s still going to hurt a lot."

He paused before continuing, "That said, you’re incredibly lucky this time. Normally, I never keep my word or promises. But when it comes to vampire stuff or topics, it’s different. Well, let’s just call it a matter of pride. In other words," he added, "I’m only going easy on you because of my pride as a vampire."

At first, I thought John was lying, but when I saw his expression, I could tell he was definitely sincere about it. In an instant, a wave of relief washed over me, and I felt a sense of happiness—things had turned out better than I had expected.

Without wasting any time, as soon as we finished talking, John started torturing me. Originally, he planned to torture me for the next 24 hours, but thanks to his good mood, it was cut down to just a few hours. Well, I’m not sure what to say at this point, but I’m certainly glad that I made the right call talking to him about the vampire stuff.

...

...

A few hours later...

"Aaaaaaaaaaaaaarghhhh!!!" I screamed in agony, but this would be the last time I had to endure it.

"Well done! We’re done here—now it’s time to end your life and put you out of your misery," John said, sounding extremely satisfied. "Alright, before I kill you, do you have any last words or anything you want to say?"

I replied, "No, I’m good... I just want to sleep right now and never wake up..."

"Alright then! Goodbye! It was nice talking to you about vampires, though. Now, rest in peace, my friend!" John said, his voice dripping with satisfaction.

My friend, my ass! I’m not your friend, you idiot! And fuck you, asshole! Ugh... Finally... I thought to myself, relieved that this damn nightmare was finally over.

Just like that, John ended my life by sucking my blood dry and absorbing all my life force.

Ding!

[Game over! You have died!]
