Chapter 51: Fourth Trial Began
The announcement hit us like a ton of bricks. "Only one of us will proceed to the final trial...?" I repeated quietly to myself, trying to wrap my head around it. I turned to look at my teammates. They were staring at the hologram board, their faces a mix of confusion and shock—probably thinking the same thing as me: What the hell does that even mean?
"Wait, we have to fight each other?!" Sylvara, the mage said, her voice full of disbelief.
"Who knows?! It doesn’t make sense at all!" Cain, the archer said, running a hand through his hair in frustration. "We’ve been through all of this together, and now they’re telling us only one of us gets to make it to the end?!"
"You gotta be fucking kidding me, right?! This can’t be real!" Thorin snapped, finally losing his cool. For the first time, he didn’t act calm, even though he was the party leader.
While everyone else was caught in a state of panic, clearly frustrated and unhappy with the current situation, John seemed oddly calm. He was smirking to himself, almost as if he were enjoying the chaos around us. I could tell because I was keeping a close eye on him, paying attention to every little movement he made. There was something about his expression that gave it away—he wasn’t bothered by the situation at all.
In fact, I just knew John was definitely going to find a way to use this moment to his advantage. There was no doubt about it—he would certainly find a way to get rid of all of us, one by one, and absorb our power for his own personal power growth. Dammit! I never thought it would happen this soon!
However, now wasn’t the time to think about John, so I pushed those thoughts aside for now. After all, we had a bigger problem to deal with right now. The altar needed defending, and the monsters weren’t about to give us a break anytime soon. I scanned the area quickly, taking in the expressions of the others. We all seemed to be thinking the same thing — survival comes first.
"Alright, let’s get through this wave of monsters first," Thorin said, trying to sound more confident than before. "Then we’ll figure out what the hell the aliens are up to with this whole thing about only one person being able to advance to the final trial. No point in stressing about it now—let’s just survive and worry about the rest later."
Suddenly, the ground shook as more goblins came charging toward us. This time, something definitely felt off. The goblins weren’t normal—their eyes were glowing bright red, as if they had lost control of their sanity and slipped into berserk or rage mode. I wasn’t sure what was happening, but there was no doubt—the goblins this time appeared far stronger than the ones we fought during the third trial.
ROAAARRR!!!
Just like that, the massive war kicked off, and we fought with everything we had to defend the Blue Crystal Altar. The situation was far from easy, as we were completely surrounded from all sides—Goblins, Goblin Captains, Goblin Chiefs, and even the Goblin King closing in from every direction. The sheer number of enemies made the battle feel never-ending and overwhelming, pushing us to the edge of exhaustion.
Tension filled every moment as we struggled to hold our ground and maintain our positions. Yet, despite the odds stacked against us, we couldn’t afford to give up after coming this far. If we wanted any chance of survival, we had to keep pushing forward, fighting with every ounce of determination and courage, until we secured victory—or perished trying.
...
...
CLANG!
The battle raged on, and we continued to fight with everything we had, but no matter how hard we pushed, it wasn’t enough. The goblins pressed on with unrelenting ferocity, their red-glowing eyes shining with an eerie, otherworldly light that suggested they were not acting on their own.
It felt as though some kind of dark force had seized control of them, driving them into a frenzied, unstoppable state of rage. Each wave of goblins surged forward with greater intensity than the last, their aggression reaching new heights, while our defenses began to crumble under the relentless onslaught.
"We can’t hold them off forever!" Thorin shouted. "Goddammit! I can’t believe this is really how it ends for us!"
"Seriously! I can’t believe we’re about to die like this, especially after making it this far! Man, fuck this!"
"Son of a bitch! Damn those alien bastards! Messing with our lives like we’re nothing to them! Argh, I can’t accept this!"
As I observed John, I noticed him secretly smirking again—serious and calculating. It was as if he secretly wished for all of us to die so he could absorb our power later. In other words, he had no intention of killing us himself; rather, he was using the goblins to do it for him. But doesn’t he realize that if the Blue Crystal Altar is destroyed, we will all fail the trial together? Or maybe his plan is to let us die first, then eliminate all the goblins and claim victory for himself?
Well, I don’t know what John’s plan is, but whether or not he’s using the goblins to get rid of us or intends to personally kill us all himself, it doesn’t really matter right now. After all, at the end of the day, the rules of this 4th trial are clear: only one of us can proceed to the final trial. In other words, sooner or later, we’re all going to have to fight each other anyway.
...
...
Roughly forty-five minutes had passed since the 4th trial began, and we were still barely holding on, defending the altar.
"Agh, I can’t take this shit anymore!"
"Fuck it! You know what, let’s just give up, guys! There’s no point in continuing with this bullshit anymore!"
"I agree! I’d rather die now than keep suffering like this!"
I sighed. I could tell that everyone was slowly reaching their limit. Even Sasha looked pale, as though she might faint at any moment. Of course, so am I too.
Suddenly, I noticed John lift his right hand up high. In that moment, black flames began to pour out from his outstretched palm, crackling ominously. My eyes widened as the eerie glow illuminated his face, casting long, dark shadows. Then the next thing I knew, all the dead goblins we had fought and slain earlier began to rise from the ground, their lifeless eyes now glowing with a sinister, malevolent blue light. I stood there, rooted in shock, my mind struggling to comprehend what I was witnessing.
What the fuck?! Are you kidding me?! I thought he was a mage and an assassin, but now he’s a goddamn necromancer too?! That’s literally three classes?! How’s that even possible?! My heart was racing as I watched him take control of the risen goblins, their movements eerily synchronized under his command.
The sheer scope of what was happening sent a chill down my spine. I couldn’t fathom how one person could possess so many classes—so many dangerous abilities. No way. I can’t believe I’ll eventually have to fight this guy...
Holy shit. The more I think about it, the more I realize how scary John is. I already knew he was strong before, but now this? Fuck, I didn’t expect this at all. Dammit, I’m so fucked this time. I’m probably going to have to die multiple times before I can even come close to beating this damn monster. Seriously, and who knows what else he’s hiding... for all we know, he might even have more than three classes.
Welp, I don’t know what the future holds for me, but one thing I do know for sure is that this will likely be the most challenging enemy I’ll ever face in my life. And it’s going to be a fight to the death too since only one of us is allowed to advance to the final trial.
Guess this is where things get intense.
Well, in any case, let’s see what happens!
