Chapter 50: Surprise Attack

We’re not sure what happened, but after completing the 3rd trial, food started appearing everywhere around this Blue Crystal Altar, as if it were meant for us to eat. I guess this must be the aliens’ way of rewarding us with a good meal after an intense battle. Either way, it’s dinner time.

After fighting all day, we were starving, so this was perfect for us. Sitting next to the Crystal Altar beneath the breathtaking night sky, we ate to our heart’s content. Knowing that we could die at any moment, we decided to enjoy our meal as much as we could—before it’s too late, before death catches up with us in the future... well, if we fail, that is.

After an entire day of slaying goblins, I leveled up significantly. And, of course, I didn’t hesitate to pour all my stat points into strength.

[Level: 135 >> 167]

[STR: 208 >> 240]

For the entire night, we chatted and laughed while enjoying our food.

MUNCH! MUNCH! MUNCH! NOM! NOM! NOM!

"Mmh! Delicious! Ah, this is the best!"

"Yummy! Damn, I can’t believe the aliens actually gave us such high-quality food!"

"Seriously, this is one of the best crispy potatoes I’ve ever had! I’m not sure what the aliens gave us, but this is definitely way better than any food I’ve eaten from my world for sure!"

Looking at the crispy potatoes these guys were eating, I couldn’t help but think that they were calling them something else. In my world, these would definitely be considered potato chips, but given that they’re not from Earth, I guess it makes sense they wouldn’t know that. Nevertheless, they looked exactly like the ones I had a long time ago when I was in the metal cargo container hiding from the aliens. Ah, now that I think about it, that brings back memories...

Yeah, you probably guessed it—they were eating food from Earth. But not all of it was from Earth. In fact, some of the stuff was something I’d never seen before. Most likely, they were foods from other worlds too that the aliens had stolen and brought here. Either way, whatever it was, it was delicious, so I couldn’t really complain.

...

After we finished our dinner, it was time to rest. Without wasting any time, we found a massive mansion on the west side of the city. The mansion looked brand new and well-maintained, as if no one had ever used it. Well, I guess that makes sense since there was no one else in this floating city other than just us.

Inside this luxurious mansion, there were many rooms, so we each found our own bedroom to rest and sleep for the night. We’re not sure when the 4th trial will appear, but for the time being, we have to rest first, refuel our energy, and prepare physically and mentally for the next upcoming trial.

In my room, inside the bathroom, sitting in the marble bathtub filled with hot water, I took my time to relax and wash myself. It had been such a long time since I’d taken a bath. You might be wondering how there’s hot water here. Well, there’s no magic or anything; I just heated the water using candles I found in the grand storage room. Surprisingly, there were plenty of candles available in this noble mansion.

Unfortunately, the water wasn’t quite the ideal temperature I had hoped for, but it was still warm enough to make it tolerable. It wasn’t perfect, but in the end, I suppose it was still better than nothing.

"Aaaahhh... nice and warm, so relaxing," I said, letting out a deep breath as I sank further into the bathtub, my muscles finally unwinding.

The soft flicker of candlelight danced across the marble walls, casting gentle shadows that added to the peaceful, almost ethereal atmosphere. It almost felt like a dream—being able to relax after everything we had been through. It wasn’t often I got moments like this, so I made sure to enjoy it every second.

After a long bath, I grabbed a towel nearby and dried myself off. Once I was done, I changed into fresh clothes and stepped out of the bathroom, ready to call it a night. When I approached my bed, I stopped, momentarily stunned. I didn’t expect it to be this massive—easily big enough for six people. Damn, what a gigantic bed...

"Aaahhh!" I yawned out loud. Damn, I’m so tired... Alright, time to sleep. Without wasting another second, I jumped onto the bed, closed my eyes, and just like that, I fell asleep like a pig.

The next morning...

We made our way back to the Blue Crystal Altar, the only place where our food spawned. Despite stuffing ourselves yesterday, we somehow were starving again. Without hesitation, we started eating our breakfast right away. The food was just as delicious and fresh as before, and there was no way we were letting any of it go to waste.

Since none of us knew when the next trial would kick off, so the plan was simple: eat as much as possible now and hope it’d keep us going later. It felt a little ridiculous, sitting around stuffing our faces like it was some kind of last meal, but better safe than sorry. Who knew what kind of madness we’d have to deal with next? For now, it was all about fueling up and taking things one step at a time.

MUNCH! MUNCH! MUNCH! NOM! NOM! NOM!

The whole vibe was pretty quiet, except for the loud noise of our eating—nobody was really in the mood to talk. We just focused on eating, as if it were the most important thing in the world. And honestly, maybe it was.

...

...

A few days had passed, and still no word on when the next—or fourth—trial would begin. The waiting time was starting to get really annoying.

"Ugh! This is so frustrating! Just when is the next trial going to start?!"

"Dammit, I just want to get this over with quickly so I can have some peace of mind! Fuck, why the hell hasn’t there been any news about the next trial yet?!"

"Seriously, I can’t believe the aliens are messing with us like this! I can’t even sleep peacefully without knowing when the next trial is starting! Man, fuck this shit!"

Everyone seemed pretty frustrated, and I could see why. Not knowing when the next trial would start was making all of us feel uneasy. It wasn’t just the waiting—it was the fact that we couldn’t prepare for whatever was coming. If we had even a hint of what to expect, we could at least do something to get ready. That would’ve taken some of the edge off and made things a little less stressful. But instead, we were stuck here, waiting around with nothing but questions and nerves.

Well, this sucks... we can’t stray too far from this altar. Because if we do, we risk missing the announcement for the 4th trial. The only way to know when it’s happening is by keeping an eye on the hologram board floating above this altar, and if we wander too far, we won’t be able to see it. Honestly, it’s kind of frustrating. Welp, I guess we’ll just have to be patient and wait it out for now. After all, there’s nothing else to do right now anyways.

...

...

Another few more days passed, and the waiting game was starting to really get on our nerves. Every morning, we’d head back to the Blue Crystal Altar, eat our fill, and then sit around, doing nothing but hoping that the next trial would finally get announced and start. But, of course, there was still no news. It felt like we were stuck in this endless loop, with no idea when the next trial would start.

One month later...

One day, in the dead of night, while we were lost in a deep sleep, the peaceful silence of the city was shattered. Around midnight, the loud, thunderous sounds of monsters crashing against the city gates echoed through the air, jolting us awake. It was clear we were under attack, and the calm of the night was replaced by the chaos of battle.

Fortunately, we slept near the Blue Crystal Altar this time.

ROAAARRR!!!

In the midst of the confusion, we instinctively looked up above at the Blue Crystal Altar. That’s when we saw it—the hologram board, glowing brightly for everyone to see. It flashed an announcement, cutting through the noise and chaos:

[Trial Four: Stage One – Defend the Blue Crystal Altar. Stage Two – Only one of you will be allowed to proceed to the final trial.]

Upon seeing the instructions on the hologram board, panic started to set in. W-Wait, what?! Only one of us gets to proceed to the final trial in stage two?! Huh?! What the hell does that even mean?!
