Chapter 49: Massive Dragon
Chapter 49: Massive Dragon
I couldn’t believe it. A freakin’ dragon—of all things—was swooping down on us. Its black scales gleamed in the sun, and those massive obsidian wings made the whole battlefield feel smaller as it landed with a deafening roar.
The dragon’s roar shook the air, and I felt the heat from its fiery breath even from this far away.
Damn, what the heck is this? A dragon and goblins teaming up against us? What kind of messed-up combo is that? Still, it’s kind of unique, I have to say—I don’t remember seeing dragons and goblins getting along with each other in most of the fantasy stories I’ve read.
ROAAARRR!!!
"Thorin!" I yelled, trying to make myself heard over the chaos. "We’ve got a dragon incoming!"
Thorin didn’t even flinch, still locked in battle with the Goblin Chief. "Don’t worry about the dragon, I’ll take care of it as soon as I’m done with this Goblin Chief!" he shouted back, his voice booming as his greatsword clashed against the giant goblin’s massive club. The ground shook with each strike, and I could tell he wasn’t about to back down.
CLANG!
Meanwhile, I noticed John doing something strange. He wasn’t paying any attention to the dragon. Instead, he was over the two dead Goblin Captains, and it looked like he was sucking something out of them with his hand, almost like a vacuum cleaner. Black smoke started pouring out of their mouths, swirling around him. At first, I couldn’t figure out what the hell was going on, but then it clicked.
Wait... is he using some kind of absorption skill?
And then it hit me. Don’t tell me it’s one of those skills that just keeps getting stronger by absorbing someone’s life force. The thought of it sent a chill down my spine. If that’s what he’s up to, we’re definitely in serious trouble in the future—especially if he ever decides to betray us or turn against us, and use us as sacrificial pawns for his personal power growth.
Goddamn dark mage! I can see why black magic is hated in so many stories—it’s because the idea of draining someone’s life force for personal gain is nothing short of pure evil and selfishness. Just thinking about it makes my blood boil. Using people as nothing more than fuel to feed your power? That crosses every line. Fuck, I don’t care what his plan is, but there’s no way in hell I’m letting this son of a bitch absorb my life force. Not now, not in the future, and definitely never.
After John absorbed the life force of the two Goblin Captains, I could instantly feel a shift in his aura. He had grown noticeably stronger, as though he had gained a massive surge of power in an instant. His gaze turned toward the dragon, and he swirled his tongue around his lips in satisfaction, eyeing it like a hunter spotting its next prey.
"Alright, leave the dragon to me! And don’t get in my way, or you might end up getting cursed by one of my spells!" Without wasting a second, John charged toward the dragon. His daggers, now engulfed in black flames, burned even hotter than before, fueled by the power he had just absorbed from the two Goblin Captains earlier.
Well, I’m glad that John has gotten stronger and could take on the dragon, though I’m pretty sure it wasn’t out of goodwill—he probably just wants to absorb the dragon for himself. Still, I can’t deny he’s been incredibly useful to the party and has definitely helped us this time.
Welp, I guess whether he’ll betray us or go against us in the future, only time will tell.
WHOOSH!
Suddenly, the dragon’s massive obsidian wings beat the air, sending gusts of wind that knocked me slightly off balance. For a moment, it looked like it was ready to attack John, who had his daggers raised, ready to strike. But then, in a move that caught everyone completely off guard, the dragon pulled back, a low growl vibrating through the ground beneath us.
Wait... what? It’s not attacking?
My heart started pounding. The dragon wasn’t interested in John at all. Instead, it turned its massive head and stared at the city. Its eyes—glowing like burning embers—locked onto something far beyond us. For a second, I thought it might be retreating, but no. The dragon gave one last powerful roar before launching itself into the air, sending a shockwave of force through the battlefield.
ROAR!!!
"Wait! What the hell?!" I said, watching as the dragon flapped its wings and got higher and higher.
John, not missing a beat, skidded to a stop, eyes narrowing as he watched the beast leave him behind. "Coward," he spat, but there was no denying that the dragon had its sights set on something else.
I turned toward the city, where the Blue Crystal Altar sat, glowing ominously in the distance. Hold on... fuck! That’s when it hit me—the dragon was heading straight to the altar to destroy it!
"Everyone!" I shouted, waving my arms in the chaos, "The dragon is going for the Blue Crystal Altar! We need to stop it now!"
Sensing the urgency, John muttered, "Tch! How annoying!" His frustration was clear. He gritted his teeth and tightened his grip on the daggers in his hands. "Leave it to me!" he declared, his voice sharp with determination. Without wasting another second, he took off, his legs propelling him toward the dragon at full speed.
Meanwhile, Thorin, having just defeated the Goblin Chief, wiped the blood off his greatsword. His eyes quickly scanned the scene, locking onto the altar where the dragon was about to wreak havoc. With a determined roar, he charged forward, his powerful strides shaking the ground beneath him. "John and I will handle the dragon!" he shouted as he sprinted. "You all stay here and focus on defending the gate—make sure no goblins get through!"
SPRINT!
Everyone nodded in unison. We all understood our roles without question. After John and Thorin left to deal with the dragon, another wave of 500 goblins showed up. This time, though, I wasn’t too worried. I’d gained so many levels from the earlier waves that taking on another wave didn’t feel like a challenge anymore. I guess as I got stronger, things just started to feel a lot easier.
Of course, I still had to manage my stamina, but thankfully, Sasha wasn’t just able to heal and buff us—she surprisingly could also restore our stamina. As expected from an S-Rank Healer. According to her, S-Rank Healers represented the pinnacle of support magic in her world. Phew, I couldn’t help but feel a bit relieved. Without someone as powerful as Sasha, this battle would’ve been far harder to manage.
...
...
I wasn’t sure how much time had passed—maybe a few hours, maybe more—but after a long day of fighting, we finally noticed the sun starting to sink below the horizon. That’s when it hit us: night was almost here.
"Keep going! We’re almost there!" Sasha urged.
By now, there were only about 30 or 40 goblin soldiers remaining. I figured this was probably the last wave before we could finally call it a day and get some rest.
Approximately 25 minutes later...
Finally, nighttime arrived, and by this point, all the monsters had been cleared out. There wasn’t a single one left.
...
...
In the center of this floating medieval city, we arrived at the Blue Crystal Altar. Above the altar, a massive holographic board appeared, displaying the following message for everyone to see:
[Congratulations! Trial Three Completed!]
[You’ve worked hard! Please rest for now and wait for the next trial to be announced.]
"Finally! Ugh, I’m so tired!"
"Nice work, everyone!"
"Phew! Glad we all made it."
It was clear everyone was worn out, but we were glad that the third trial was finally over.
Jeez, what an intense battle today. Those goblins were something else. Damn those green bastards—I hope I never have to see them again, ever!
