Chapter 39: Mysterious Portal
Oh well, goodbye Gunnar... it was nice spending time and talking to you...
Sitting down, I leaned back against the wall, feeling a wave of sadness wash over me. It had been a while since I’d felt this way. Still, I couldn’t blame myself—there was nothing I could’ve done to save Gunnar anyway. After all, life doesn’t always go your way. That’s just how life is; I guess you can’t expect everything to be perfect.
I couldn’t help but sigh. How did my life end up like this? I was supposed to have a normal life—go to college, graduate, land a good job, and eventually get married. Seriously, these goddamn aliens turned my fucking life upside down. Jeez, if it weren’t for them, I’d be living a normal life by now, without all this chaos. Well, it’s too late to dwell on the past now, so I might as well focus on what I can do right now.
A week passed...
Up until now, I’m still stuck in this prison cell, unsure of when the aliens will come and take me away, but I know it could be any time now. Of course, I haven’t forgotten to do my daily quest exercises while waiting. Seriously, these damn aliens are truly unpredictable—it’s impossible to know what they’re planning to do with me or with the other superhumans.
Nevertheless, as I waited for my turn, I made sure to stay committed to my daily quest exercises. It wasn’t just a routine—it was my sole means of growing stronger while being trapped within these prison walls.
Every day, I had to push myself to the limit, knowing that this was the only opportunity I had to improve my strength in a place where freedom and hope seemed distant. It was crucial to make the most of it while I still had the chance, as I couldn’t afford to waste even a single moment in this ongoing grind.
"Raaaaarghh! Huuuuraaaahh! One, two! One, two! One, two!"
Push-ups! Sit-ups! Squats! High Jumps! Running!
...
...
After a few hours of nonstop working out, I decided to stop and take a quick break. My breath was heavy, like I’d just run a marathon.
"Huff! Huff! Huff!" I leaned against the wall, trying to catch my breath and wipe the sweat off my face. It felt good to stop for a second, but I knew I couldn’t rest for too long.
Suddenly:
BAAMM!!!
The loud crash of the door slamming open shattered my moment of rest. The same four alien prison guards barged into my cell with their heavy footsteps echoing off the walls. Their presence was a constant reminder that I was a prisoner, their cold eyes scanning me with disdain.
"Prisoner #119,322, your time is up! Get up and follow us now!" The alien guard’s voice was commanding, his tone as cold as the metal bars surrounding me. The words seemed to carry an edge of irritation, as if they couldn’t be bothered to deal with me any longer.
Although I didn’t like the fact that they were so bossy, I had no choice but to comply for now. Angering them would only make the situation even worse, so without further delay, I got up and obediently followed them. As for where they were taking me to, I had no idea, but I knew I’d find out eventually.
For about fifteen minutes, we kept walking, and that’s when it started to hit me just how massive this prison place really was. This colossal prison felt endless, packed with what had to be thousands of superhumans crammed into cells. It was hard to wrap my head around—so many people with incredible power and abilities, yet they were locked up and treated like mere slaves here.
As we passed by cell after cell, I caught glimpses of the other superhumans’ faces through the barred cells. Every pair of eyes told the same story—an unshakable fear, deeply ingrained and inescapable. It wasn’t just fear of the alien guards or the walls that caged them; it was the terror of knowing that this was their reality, with no sign of hope or escape. It was a sight I knew I would never forget.
Dammit, just where the hell are these alien guards planning to take me to?! I couldn’t shake the nervous feeling, knowing whatever it was, I knew it wasn’t going to be good.
Every turn, every step, felt like it was leading me further into danger. I desperately wanted to ask them where we were going, but I knew better. These alien guards had bad tempers, and I could already tell that they wouldn’t answer my questions kindly. If I asked, it would only make things worse, so I stayed silent.
Soon, we stepped into a massive, gleaming hall with an otherworldly design. At the center of this vast space stood a colossal, dazzling blue portal, crackling with intense electricity. Its size was immense, spanning at least 50 feet in both width and height.
It was no surprise, I wasn’t alone here. Rows of other superhumans were lining up, waiting for their turn to enter the gigantic portal. Though, to be fair, it wasn’t as if they had a choice—it was clear they were being forced to go in the portal, or else they risked being tortured or possibly even killed.
"Err... so what now?" I asked, my curiosity tinged with unease.
"You see those thousands of superhumans over there? Go join them in line. When it’s your turn, you’ll enter the portal. And just so you know, we’ll be keeping a very close eye on you, so don’t even think about running away. Got it? Alright! Now, get moving!"
"Y-Yes, sir!" I stammered, fear gripping me.
Ugh, dammit! Just what in the world is going on?! And where the hell is that portal leading everyone to?! Man, I don’t know what’s on the other side, but given how cruel these aliens are, I’m sure it’s going to be extremely dangerous and won’t end well for everyone.
