Chapter 335: 328

Armored vehicles could hardly be described as comfortable, and if they were to travel on well-maintained roads, that might have been somewhat bearable. But on rugged terrain, it made no difference whether it was a wheeled armored vehicle or not.

The weather had become very hot.

If it hadn’t been for the air conditioning in the crew compartment, life would have been quite unbearable. Gao Yuan and his team had set out in early spring, but now, as far as the temperature was concerned, it already felt like high summer.

"We’ve crossed the border!"

Leaning out, hand on the machine gun, Li Jingang, who really just wanted some air, peered down from the gun turret into the crew compartment and shouted to everyone inside, "We’ve long passed the border! We’re now in Persia territory, I just saw a road sign, Zabole is ahead in Persia!"

In two and a half days, experiencing three small-scale attacks—which could hardly be considered attacks, rather, they were merely three incidents involving gunfire—Gao Yuan and his team had already crossed the Afghan border and arrived within Persia.

The crossing of the national border was silent and undisturbed, without encountering any resistance, to the extent that Gao Yuan always thought they hadn’t crossed the border yet.

Should they stop?

There wasn’t a soul in sight, so what would be the point of stopping, to ask the air for permission to cross the border?

As long as there was no one to stop them, they could just keep moving forward.

The armored vehicle finally came to a halt again, and Panxin said over the intercom, "Vanguard calling base, if you receive, please respond, over."

Panxin was calling Andrew, so although Gao Yuan and his team could hear the voice from the intercom, no one interjected.

The voice of Andrew was crackling. This was because the distance was growing larger; now the lead force, opening the route ahead, was about thirty kilometers away from the main convoy in the rear.

"Base received, over."

"Vanguard has crossed the border and reached Zabole. Halting the advance for now, will continue after reconnaissance, over."

"Understood, you’re moving too fast, over."

Gao Yuan could hear the whole conversation, but it was conducted in English, which he could not understand.

This foreign language was indeed a source of frustration for Gao Yuan, who felt that learning English was nowhere near as simple as learning kung fu, or rather, that English was much harder to learn than kung fu.

The natural conditions were equally harsh, but the most apparent sign of having crossed the border was the sudden appearance of farmland along the roads.

The farmland had been abandoned, yet the difference between it and the desert was clear. Simple irrigation systems were scattered throughout the fields, the foundation for cultivation under the same climate and geological conditions.

But now, the fields were overrun with nothing but weeds.

The fact that the farmlands remained uncultivated meant that there were no people around, at least not enough living people.

The five armored vehicles spread out in a wedge formation, with a machine gunner left on each of the two Foxhounds, while the Stryker Armored Vehicle was unnecessary to man in such a way, as it was equipped with an unmanned turret.

"Hurry to the restroom and don’t stray too far, Harry, scout with the drone!"

The one issuing commands was Panxin, and naturally, Gao Yuan and the others were accustomed to following his combat orders. The Americans in the two armored vehicles were not too keen, but they had no choice.

If they were to make a fuss with Gao Yuan and the rest here, Gao Yuan would actually welcome it. Having a falling out was unlikely, but Gao Yuan wouldn’t mind hitting the road light.

This wasn’t borne out of spite, but Gao Yuan just hadn’t established a strong enough friendship with the people from Kandahar Air Base—well, except for the others, that is.

Apart from Gao Yuan, the two injured, and Xinghe, an alien, everyone else had formed a bond of camaraderie with the numerous female soldiers at Kandahar Air Base that wasn’t purely platonic, so they cherished this tainted friendship greatly.

After relieving themselves, they took a walk around. Seeing that the unmanned turrets on the Stryker vehicles had made a few rounds and the large vehicle-mounted thermal imagers on the armored vehicles didn’t detect any potential targets, they could basically stop worrying about an ambush attack.

At least within the range of rifles and rocket launchers, there was no need to fear a sudden attack.

Moreover, once they were in Persia, they were unlikely to be as apprehensive as in Afghan, because there is a significant difference between a country that had enjoyed over twenty years of peace and one that had been at war for decades, especially in the mindset of the populace.

From Gao Yuan’s experience, larger cities were almost certainly infested with zombies, while rural areas or wilderness were where normal human activities could possibly be found.

If the military hadn’t organized and carried out operations to clear the zombies from the cities, there was no need to say more—the zombies would definitely still be there.

And that remained the case even after more than half a year.

Zabole was a key border town in Persia. If no signs of live humans were found here, then it was certain they wouldn’t need to deal with Persia’s border troops. But whether that was a good or bad thing was hard to tell right now.

The drone was flown out, but reaching the actual reconnaissance area would take some time.

To speed up the process, Harry launched a fixed-wing scout drone. If all went well, within half an hour Gao Yuan and the others should know the general situation around Zabole and decide whether they could drive straight out, take a detour, or if necessary, carve a bloody path through the zombies. It all depended on various conditions.

Ashraf, clutching his rifle, walked into a field overgrown with wild grass. He bent down, plucked a handful of grass, then sighed with regret.

Watching Ashraf’s actions, Gao Yuan shook his head and whispered to Li Yang beside him, "Grain, oh grain, it seems that even in Persia, the food problem won’t be easy to solve."

Li Yang whispered back, "Yeah, agricultural activities have all stopped. Now with so many people gone, the stockpiled grain can last a little while longer, but if we can’t resume agricultural production, in the future..."

"In the future, mankind will have to fight for every bite to eat."

Not every country has food reserves, much less sufficient food reserves, especially in Africa. And the places Gao Yuan and his group were heading to were known for their poverty, where food crises were the norm.

Gao Yuan felt very worried. Seeing him constantly sigh, Li Yang said, "You’re worrying again. Things have come to this, what’s the use of worrying?"

Gao Yuan wiped his face and said, "I know worrying is pointless, but if I didn’t worry, I wouldn’t be myself. I’m always in a state of anxiety. It’s been like this since before the Serpent People came, and now it’s actually much better."

Li Yang remained silent. Gao Yuan turned around and whispered, "On our way here, not a single place we passed was a high-yield grain area. But if we get the chance, we need to stock up more on food. By the way, I haven’t had a real full meal in a long time."

Just then, Harry Kane called out loudly, "Zombie traces found, a large congregation of zombies on our path. Hey everyone, looks like there have been many zombie hunts here before."
