The Ultimate War Of The Apocalypse -
Chapter 336 - 329: Luring the Monster
Chapter 336: Chapter 329: Luring the Monster
About a hundred or so zombies gathered at the crossroads of a village on the outskirts of Zabole.
Scattered on the ground were some white bones, unidentifiable as to which animal they belonged, and Gao Yuan had no wish to examine them closely.
During reconnaissance, there would always be a crowd gathered, and of course, Gao Yuan was one of them.
"Those zombies don’t seem to be in good shape, without sustenance for a long time, zombies also experience a severe decline in physical capability,"
Gao Yuan could be called a zombie expert, though this title was neither self-proclaimed nor given by others, but so far, no one had studied zombies more than him.
"Fly the drone lower and pass directly above those zombies’ heads."
When Gao Yuan spoke, it had to be translated by Li Yang before Harry Kane would maneuver the drone to circle around and fly close over the zombies’ heads.
The buzzing sound of the engine caught the attention of the zombies; at least half of them lifted their heads upon hearing the noise, but they did not follow the drone.
As the drone ascended again, Gao Yuan nodded and said, "These zombies are sluggish; if they were in their normal state, they would have at least followed the drone for a while. Alright, continue the reconnaissance further ahead."
The drone circled in the air and continued flying toward Zabole.
"What should we do?"
Li Yang asked, to which Gao Yuan replied without hesitation, "Check the road conditions. If we can go around, we will; if we can’t, we still have to. But with just this many zombies, we could just roll right over them. However, we must absolutely not open fire, definitely not."
There weren’t many highways near Zabole, and the few that existed all passed through the city. If passing through the city center of Zabole was necessary, it would certainly be a significant challenge.
In terms of experience with large-scale zombie encounters, no one was more seasoned than the members of the Spark Squad, and within the Spark Squad, no one was more experienced than Gao Yuan.
When the drone sent back images of Zabole’s city center, Gao Yuan gave it one glance and immediately said in a low voice, "It’s over. There are zombies everywhere. The number of zombies seen is not very numerous, and they are quite scattered, but this further indicates that no cleanup has occurred. If we enter the city, we’ll be facing attacks from thousands, perhaps tens of thousands of zombies. Notify Andrew to slow down."
The Americans were all quite nervous because they had never seen such a large-scale situation before. Although there were many zombies in Kandahar’s city center, rendering it a no-go zone, the air force base was still a long way from the city. Moreover, when they left, the convoy had avoided Kandahar’s city center by a wide margin, so these people had never seen so many zombies at once.
After Li Jingang, nicknamed King Kong, communicated with the main convoy via the vehicle-mounted radio, he shouted inside the vehicle, "The colonel is asking what to do."
"All he knows is to ask what to do, what to do. What else can we do? Obviously, it’s up to us to find a solution,"
Gao Yuan expressed his helplessness with a complaint and then beckoned with his hand, "Come, spread out the map; let’s first examine the surrounding environment and terrain."
It was easy enough with a few armored vehicles; they could make their way regardless of the roads, circling around Zabole even through fields. However, the numerous trucks in the large convoy, especially the fully loaded oil tankers, simply couldn’t manage to drive through the rough farmland. Without these oil tankers, the whole convoy wouldn’t be able to travel much farther.
Gao Yuan merely glanced at the large map before immediately saying, "It’s manageable. Prepare two armored vehicles, head to the north side of Zabole, and fire a few rounds to draw the zombies out. Alternate firing."
Gao Yuan, who mentioned playing games, raised his head and said, "You’ve all played online games before, right? Alternating the MT to pull aggro, don’t let the monsters focus all the aggro on one person—understand?"
Li Yang nodded his head, but Li Jingang and Panxin looked bewildered before Li Jingang whispered, "Joined the army too early, never got the chance to play, don’t know what you’re talking about."
Li Yang whispered back, "If we’re gonna use cannons, we’ll have to use those two Stryker Armored Vehicles—our vehicles don’t have cannons."
After considering it for a moment, Gao Yuan said, "I don’t really trust leaving it to them, so how about this? Let’s switch vehicles. It’s better if we take care of this ourselves. Notify Andrew to be ready to lead the main convoy to speed through the roads on the outskirts of the city at any time. After they’ve passed, we’ll go off-road and catch up with them from the side."
Slapping his hand down on the map, Gao Yuan said, "Let’s get ready. Fill up the armored vehicles with fuel, and... Harry, scout out the essential route to see if it’s clear. It would be troublesome if we find the road blocked when it’s go-time."
This time Li Yang and Panxin exchanged glances, then Panxin spread his hands and said, "Don’t look at me. Just do it."
Li Yang still had to act as a translator, explaining Gao Yuan’s intentions to the Americans. They couldn’t start moving yet; they had to wait for Harry to scout with the drone, and for Andrew’s large convoy to arrive. Plus, to ensure there were no issues with fuel, they had to fill all the vehicles."
Their vehicles’ own fuel was running low, so they no doubt had to wait for the main force to arrive.
By the time everything was ready, two hours had already passed.
The routes had all been thoroughly scouted. The most critical task, being the bait, still fell on Gao Yuan. Once the armored vehicles were refueled, Gao Yuan didn’t bother explaining too much to Andrew and directly led the two Stryker Armored Vehicles northward.
There are several models of the Stryker, including armored personnel carriers and infantry fighting vehicles, but of course, the ones Gao Yuan and his team chose were the dedicated armored combat vehicles.
Gao Yuan had to carefully estimate the distance, assessing the range of the cannon and explosion sounds. After all, luring zombies was a high-risk, high-difficulty task, not something just anyone could casually do.
Moreover, Gao Yuan was only relying on experience to judge the distance, not a complete data chain. If he got too close, or if they moved too slowly and got surrounded by zombies, the consequences would be unknown to everyone.
"Okay, that’s about right, stop here."
Gao Yuan looked through binoculars from the top of the vehicle. They were now about five kilometers from Zabole’s city center, which should be sufficiently remote and allowed enough time to get away.
"Spread the two armored vehicles at least a kilometer apart, then wait for my command to fire. Once the zombies start chasing, it’s essential to follow commands," he continued.
Panxin and Li Jingang would command one vehicle, and Gao Yuan and Li Yang would take another. Once the distance was right and the time ripe, Gao Yuan shouted, "Notify Andrew to get ready—now, let’s fire a shot into the city."
A few seconds later, the 105mm rifled cannon went off with a thunderous boom, firing a shot into Zabole. After a brief pause, they faintly heard a weak explosion sound.
They still needed to verify how effective it was at attracting zombies. Gao Yuan leaned out of the vehicle, peering through his binoculars towards the city, but before he could spot any zombies, he heard Liu Chunxiao’s urgent voice over the radio, "Zombies have started moving—a lot of them, my God. The city’s zombies are all in disarray."
Gao Yuan let out a breath and said, "Alright, start firing towards the north side of the city, slowly draw them towards us. It would be so much better if we had a larger drone with a sound system—no planes available, unfortunately."
