The Ultimate War Of The Apocalypse
Chapter 295 - 288: Doomsday Syndrome

Chapter 295: Chapter 288: Doomsday Syndrome

Kandahar Air Base was merely harassed, not surrounded, so as long as Kandahar Air Base did not fire, Gao Yuan and his team could enter smoothly.

The road by the entrance to the air base was full of potholes. When the car approached the entrance, it had to slow down considerably, slowly navigating around one bollard after another to enter the gates of the air base.

Gao Yuan and Xinghe, along with Li Yang and Song Qian, did not enter Kandahar Air Base with the vehicle, in case the base’s guards suddenly opened fire, which would leave everyone in the vehicle with no escape.

It’s wise not to harbor ill-intentions, but it’s even wiser to always be cautious; although they had communicated for quite some time beforehand, there was no telling what might happen next.

The vehicle did indeed enter safely, and soon after, Panxin spoke over the walkie-talkie, "You can come in now; we’re waiting for you at the entrance. Uh, the people here are really... welcoming. They are sending over a Foxhound Protected Patrol Vehicle to pick you up."

Gao Yuan looked at Li Yang, who paused before asking, "What’s the situation?"

Over the walkie-talkie, Panxin said, "They might just be genuinely friendly; they’re coming out."

As they spoke, a vehicle with headlights shining brightly—but with infrared illumination that was invisible to the naked eye without night vision gear—drove out.

Gao Yuan and his team were three kilometers away from the air base’s gate, but once the armored vehicle exited, it sped towards them like a streak of lightning.

Li Yang thought for a moment and then switched on the IR light on his helmet.

The IR light served as a beacon, and the armored vehicle drove straight towards it before swerving sharply to point its rear end at Gao Yuan and his companions.

A soldier, half his body sticking out from the roof hatch, stretched his arms wide open and bellowed at Gao Yuan and the others, "Welcome to Hell!"

The vehicle was a 4X4 wheeled armored transport, quite tall with a high chassis; ladders were available at the driver’s and co-driver’s spots for ingress and egress, while passengers would enter through the rear door.

The rear door opened from the inside, a soldier gestured with his hand, then motioned again more vigorously, shouting, "Get on! Get on!"

Li Yang was the first to board, followed by Gao Yuan and the others in single file. After Song Qian, the last one boarded, the soldier who opened the door shut it and then yelled, "Go, go!"

The hefty armored vehicle moved with surprising agility, as if it were given a hefty kick from behind, darting off at breakneck speed.

A soldier sitting near the rear door gave Gao Yuan and his companions a once-over, then suddenly said, "Happy to see you guys, really happy, happier than you can imagine! Tell me, what the hell has this world turned into!"

Gao Yuan struggled to understand; he was learning English but was still unable to communicate smoothly with an Englishman.

So Gao Yuan watched the loud, yelling machine gunner.

The gunner wore football shorts branded with the Manchester City logo, showing off a pair of hairy long legs, his feet adorned with flip-flops.

One foot propped up, he rubbed it against his other leg, then the machine gunner lowered his hand to scratch his butt before bending into the vehicle through the roof hatch.

He wore an olive green T-shirt with a bulletproof vest over it, and his helmet was askew on his head as his narrow, gaunt face leaned in close to Gao Yuan.

The outfit wasn’t the issue, but the temperature outside was only about seven or eight degrees—it was very cold.

"Hello there!"

Gao Yuan replied instinctively, "Hello."

The long-faced soldier sat down on a seat, glanced at Xinghe, and his eyes lit up as he said, "Hello, miss, my name is Harry, Harry Kane. Do you understand what I’m saying? How are you?"

Xinghe gave Harry a look and then responded with a smile in very fluent English, "I don’t understand what you are saying."

Harry Kane was obviously taken aback, and at that moment, Li Yang smiled and said, "Happy to meet you."

The soldier by the rear door immediately asked, "Tell me, what’s it like out there now? That’s all I care about!"

Li Yang thought for a moment, shook his head, and said, "Not good, very bad."

"How bad is it?"

Li Yang said gravely, "End of the world bad."

"Shit, I knew it... How did you get here then? You’re Shenzhou People, right? You came from Shenzhou, so if the world’s already gone to hell, how did you get here!"

Li Yang didn’t hesitate, "The attack came, to be precise, this world hasn’t ended, at least not completely."

At this point, the armored vehicle abruptly slowed again, then swerved left and right as it passed the roadblocks at the base entrance.

The vehicle came to a stop, the tailgate opened once more, and Panxin and the others stood outside, where about twenty people enthusiastically engaged in conversation with them.

It seemed they were receiving a very warm welcome indeed.

However, the soldiers didn’t quite look the part, with Gao Yuan spotting a female soldier sporting oversized rabbit ears on her head, her rifle slung over her shoulder as she opened her arms and embraced Li Jingang.

To put it simply, every person here didn’t quite fit the image of a soldier.

The only one who appeared somewhat normal was a man in an officer’s uniform, shouting loudly at the people around him, then he gestured with a wave of his hand and also climbed onto the armored vehicle Gao Yuan and the others were on.

"Every day, every moment, we might come under fire, so we better get moving quickly. Now we’re heading to the living area. Please follow me, gentlemen, we’ll have a good talk first, and then you can choose whether to revel or to rest."

After finishing, the officer suddenly burst into hysterical laughter, laughing for a full minute before wiping away the tears brought on by his laughter and saying, "A good rest, ha ha, what a funny joke."

Panxin and the others got back into the vehicle, while the major who was an officer looked at Gao Yuan and them with interest, his gaze landing eventually on the sniper rifle Li Yang was holding, and then his eyes settled on Xinghe.

"Welcome to Hell, we are just waiting to die here, and now you’ve arrived too. I am Major Cahill Ross from the Royal Air Force of England, I’d prefer you call me Major Ross, not Cahill, hahaha..."

After laughing wildly, Cahill suddenly composed himself and then seriously said, "A major in the air force without planes."

Having said it seriously, Cahill burst out laughing again and slapped his thigh, exclaiming, "A major in the air force without planes, hahaha, that joke is just too ridiculous..."

It seemed like everyone here was not quite right in the head, with the sole exception being the soldier sitting at the tailgate of the armored vehicle.

Li Yang exchanged a glance with Gao Yuan, his expression appeared normal, but Gao Yuan could read the worry in his eyes.

It was as if everyone here was a hysterical maniac.

The armored vehicle came to a stop again, the tailgate opened once more, and the soldier sitting at there jumped down, then loudly said, "Beware of shells, but don’t be too scared when you hear explosions, please be careful, ma’am."

Gao Yuan looked outside and saw that it was still quite bright, but the source of light was not from lamps but from burning piles of trash within empty oil drums.

Apart from the burning piles, one could see a semi-circular domed building not too far away, ablaze with light, and even the sounds of music and cheering could be heard.

"There is fire here, there is music and there are passionate people. If you wish to join the party, you are welcome," the soldier said with a shrug and smile.

"I am sure you’ll be very popular."

Gao Yuan figured he more or less understood, but just then, Cahill got off the vehicle, took a deep breath, and looking at the truck parked behind them, said, "Before you join the party, first meet our commander. We are very keen to know what the outside has become. You have wounded, and we have a medical room."

Li Yang couldn’t help asking, "What happened here?"

Cahill rubbed his forehead and replied, "Well, the Aliens came, then most of us turned into zombies, our planes couldn’t take off, we lost all contact with the outside world, we’ve been abandoned, stuck here unable to go anywhere. Damn Afghans attack us every day, every single day! And what’s worse, we’ve run out of beer, even the condoms are gone."

After saying that, Cahill shrugged and added, "But that’s nothing. What’s truly terrifying is that the highest-ranking survivor turned out to be an American madman who has become the commander of this base. Ha, this world is too crazy."

Just then, a woman emerged from the large tent where there was a raging party, passing by Gao Yuan and his group without much concern. However, upon seeing the soldier sitting at the tailgate, she waved and said, "Hey, Jonathan."

There were many female soldiers at Kandahar Air Base, so seeing one wasn’t surprising. But, this soldier was visibly pregnant.

Jonathan waved back, "Hey, you heading back?"

"Yeah, I think I partied too hard, the little fellow is kicking my belly, he’s expressing his discontent. Are you coming over tonight?" she asked.

Jonathan shrugged and replied, "Unfortunately, I’m pretty busy tonight."

The female soldier walked over slowly. She wasn’t drunk, probably because there was no alcohol to drink, but after giving Gao Yuan and the others a casual glance, she suddenly froze in shock. Then, with extreme astonishment she exclaimed, "Oh my God, who are these people? Are they outsiders? They’re new here, right? Oh, my God! My God!"

The female soldier turned and ran back to the party tent, her shouts filling the air as she sprinted despite her pregnant belly, making Gao Yuan fear she might trip and fall.

Cahill let out a low sigh and commented, "She was pretty before getting pregnant; not so much anymore. Alright, gentlemen, please follow me before you’re surrounded by a bunch of lunatics."
