Chapter 294: Chapter 287 Welcome to Hell

It can no longer be called a convoy, just a lone, battered car embarking on a tough journey again.

The vast majority of food and water had been abandoned because there was only one car left—they had to choose between giving up weapons or food.

Since losing food could be compensated by looting but losing weapons would lead to certain death, it was an easy choice to keep weapons over food.

Liu Deguang said the repaired engine could last a hundred kilometers, so it definitely would last a hundred kilometers. No one knew where their confidence in him came from, but they just trusted Liu Deguang, even though he was now unconscious.

After driving ten kilometers, the car stopped again.

The surroundings were open, with no elevation within ten kilometers that could threaten the car. Then, a heavy machine gun was set up around the car, Panxin and Li Jingang switched to large-caliber sniper rifles, and Li Yang used his medium-caliber sniper rifle.

Even if someone came now, they would not fall into a situation of being attacked from all sides.

The reason they stopped halfway was simple: Liu Deguang had to undergo surgery.

Traveling at night was also safer, because Spark Squad had vehicle-mounted thermal imagers and each person had thermal imagers and night-vision goggles. If they encountered enemies, they could detect them from a great distance, but during the day, Spark Squad could not take advantage of their field of vision.

Wang Ning performed surgery on Liu Deguang in the car while the others kept watch.

Time passed slowly, from dusk until the sky was completely dark.

They were fifty kilometers from Kandahar City and just over thirty kilometers from Kandahar Air Base, but no one knew the current situation of Kandahar Air Base. It might have been wiped out in an attack by the Serpent People or completely obliterated by the Afghans. Of course, Kandahar Air Base might also be safe and sound. Until they actually arrived, it was impossible to say for certain.

The main reason for heading to Kandahar Air Base was the agreement amongst Blue Star Alliance member countries to jointly resist the Serpent People, and discussing international agreements with the people at Kandahar Air Base should be more realistic than with the Afghans.

Thermal imaging did not have to wait for dark to be used, but it was indeed more effective after the ground temperature dropped at night, and the same was true for the low-light night-vision goggles. Now Gao Yuan and his team’s visibility was not affected at all, but the Afghans were plunged into darkness.

"Let’s move out, pay attention to conserving the battery life of the night vision equipment, as we can’t charge it conveniently now."

All kinds of electronic devices needed charging, and along their journey, anytime the car’s generator was running, the charging ports were never idle, as they were always charging various batteries. But now that three cars had been reduced to one, charging was naturally affected.

The car moved slowly, at a speed of only about twenty kilometers per hour, but even so, after driving for more than an hour in the dark, they saw lights in the distance.

The car stopped again because Kandahar Air Base was brightly lit, and the vehicle’s thermal imager could see the entire outline of the air base and scattered human-shaped heat sources outside the base.

After getting out of the car, they could even hear faint music.

Two light sounds, ’pop pop,’ emerged at an open space outside the base. Two red dots quickly flew into the sky, accompanied by a rapid decrease in heat and then the heat sources disappeared. Moments later, two dull explosions were heard inside the air base.

Kandahar Air Base obviously still existed, and it was equally obvious that the Afghans were still launching attacks on the base.

Gao Yuan didn’t see the mortar shells being fired into the sky; he jumped down from the back of the car and walked to the front, shouting, "What’s going on?"

Panxin pointed forward and then sighed, saying, "We’ve arrived."

Gao Yuan looked in the direction Panxin was pointing, then he exclaimed, "It’s huge."

A huge base, a long wall.

One of the wall’s machine guns suddenly opened fire, tracer bullets tracing beautiful red lines in the sky, landing precisely on the position from which mortar shells had been fired, and then rebounding one by one slowly into the air before disappearing.

Even without night-vision goggles, this scene could be seen clearly.

On the opposite side of the mortar launching site, a flare of light suddenly appeared, followed by a second and a third.

The flashes repeated, at first intermittent, then quickly becoming continuous.

The flashing lasted for over ten seconds, and then a series of explosions rang out across the air base.

Panxin sighed again and said, "Hmm, those are 107 mm rocket launchers."

Gao Yuan suddenly felt the scene before him was surreal.

The aliens had come, yet Earthlings were still waging war, and it was a heated one at that.

Gao Yuan thought for a moment and asked, "I’m just concerned about one thing, how do we get in? And at this distance, are we in danger?"

Panxin gave a wry smile and said, "Getting in is simple, just call out and ask someone to open the gate. Come on, let’s establish contact with the air base first."

"Wait a minute, how do you know their communication frequency?"

Panxin scratched his head and replied, "I just know it."

Gao Yuan was still not satisfied and curiously asked, "How do you know it?"

Panxin smiled and said, "These communication frequencies are definitely supposed to change, but there are always a few bands that are fixed or often used. It’s military secret, but for us, such a simple secret to crack doesn’t really count as a military secret. Besides, it takes only a second for our radios to establish contact with theirs."

After speaking, Panxin waved at Li Jingang, who quickly took the radio microphone inside the car and said in English, "Hello, does anyone copy? We are Shenzhou soldiers, according to the Blue Star Alliance agreement, we request entry to Kandahar Air Base. Over."

As soon as Li Jingang finished speaking, he heard a response in his earpiece. He quickly gave Panxin a thumbs up, indicating that he had received a response. After a moment, he told Panxin, "Contact established, they say they need to ask their commander."

Panxin was about to speak when Li Jingang gestured again to indicate that he was listening. After a moment, he said into the radio in English, "Roger, understood."

After that, Li Jingang stuck his head out of the car window and said to Panxin and Gao Yuan, "They replied, ’Welcome to Hell.’
