Chapter 61: 61. Because unwilling to (express thanks)
Knowing that Fu Hengyi had awakened, Mu Liancheng and others swarmed into the room. Seeing this, Shen Qinglan quietly exited the hospital room, giving them space.
"Brother Fu, I’m sorry, this time it was all my fault." Houzi lowered his head and apologized.
The gentle expression had long disappeared from Fu Hengyi’s face, replaced by his usual seriousness, "What was the mistake?"
"I failed to properly survey the enemy situation, putting my teammates in danger."
Fu Hengyi looked at him steadily, "Since you know it’s a mistake, do you know what to do?"
Houzi: "I know, I’ll write a review when I return and ensure there won’t be a next time."
Indeed, it was his fault, and he was prepared to accept the punishment without complaints or regrets.
"Brother Fu, you can’t blame Houzi entirely," Mu Liancheng spoke up in his defense, "I was careless myself, which allowed us to fall into their trap; I am also responsible for this incident."
"No, Brother Mu, this has nothing to do with you," Houzi said urgently.
Fu Hengyi watched the two compete to take responsibility, silent for a long time before he finally spoke softly, "I have my own judgment on this matter. We have already found the person, but the protection duty is not yet over. You shouldn’t linger here too long; go back. I might take a leave for some time, and I’ll leave the rest of the matters in Liancheng’s hands."
"Yes."
People gradually left the hospital room, with Mu Liancheng lagging behind, reluctant to leave.
"Is there anything else?"
"Brother Fu, is she really your wife?" Mu Liancheng couldn’t hold back his curiosity.
It was clear who ’she’ referred to.
Fu Hengyi swept him with a faint glance, "Could she possibly be yours?"
Mu Liancheng stiffened, "Well, Brother Fu, your little sister-in-law is very pretty. You’re lucky."
Sensing the chill emanating from Fu Hengyi, Mu Liancheng said a word and slipped out of the hospital room.
But his curiosity only deepened. Looking at Brother Fu’s demeanor, it was really hard to guess his attitude towards the little sister-in-law, so, why exactly did these two get married?
When Shen Qinglan returned, Mu Liancheng and the others had already left; only Fu Hengyi remained in the hospital room. He seemed to be making a phone call, his face pale yet his voice firm. He quickly ended the call upon seeing her enter.
"I bought you some porridge, do you want it now?" Shen Qinglan lifted the bag in her hand, asking Fu Hengyi.
Fu Hengyi nodded; he was indeed hungry.
"Have you eaten yet?" Fu Hengyi asked.
"I’ve already eaten, and I also bought you a couple of change of clothes."
She had just gone out to buy their change of clothes, having come out in a hurry without bringing any, and after watching over Fu Hengyi for a whole day and night without a bath, even without being obsessed with cleanliness, Shen Qinglan felt somewhat uncomfortable.
Considering that Fu Hengyi had just had surgery, Shen Qinglan decided on pig liver porridge, not knowing where she bought it from, but the porridge tasted very good, and Fu Hengyi drank two bowls in one go.
Watching Fu Hengyi drink the porridge, Shen Qinglan took the change of clothes and entered the bathroom; this was a high-class hospital room with a shower in the bathroom.
When she re-emerged, she looked refreshed. She had just washed her hair, which was still dripping.
"Why don’t you dry your hair?" Fu Hengyi frowned.
Shen Qinglan held a towel and haphazardly wiped her hair. Fu Hengyi, rendered speechless, planned to help her but forgot about his injury. As he moved, he pulled at his wound, causing his expression to shift slightly.
Shen Qinglan hurried over and checked his wound, relieved to find no blood seeping out. "Just lie still and don’t move. I’ve already discussed this with Grandpa. In a couple of days, once your wound is a bit better, we’ll transfer back to Beijing."
Fu Hengyi had no objections and nodded to show he understood.
Suddenly, he thought of something and laughed, confusing Shen Qinglan.
"It’s ironic, I was just regretting how our marriage has meant I’m often away from home without much time to spend with you. Now, this injury might actually be a blessing. I can finally spend some quality time with you at home."
...
Listening to him, one might think he wasn’t injured but on vacation.
To prevent Fu Hengyi from moving again, Shen Qinglan dried her own hair.
Having just woken from a long unconsciousness, Fu Hengyi found himself unable to sleep. Looking for something else to do while recuperating, he motioned to Shen Qinglan, who was sitting on the sofa. "Come, keep me company and chat."
Shen Qinglan walked to his bedside and pulled up a chair to sit down.
"What shall we talk about?" she asked him.
Fu Hengyi paused, realizing he didn’t really have a specific topic in mind; he just wanted to talk to her.
"What have you been up to these days at home?" he started.
Shen Qinglan just stared at him silently.
He often called her to have brief chats, so how could he not know what she had been doing?
Fu Hengyi realized this as well, but without any trace of embarrassment, he took her hand and held it tenderly in his. "I just want to understand you a little better."
"Before I got the call, I was having dinner with Grandpa. I had planned to accompany Xiao Xuan to her audition’s next round, but now she’ll have to go by herself."
Shen Qinglan spoke, not pulling her hand away, letting him hold it even though she felt slightly uneasy.
Yu Xiaoxuan had participated in the actor selection event organized by Han Yi’s company, something Fu Hengyi had heard from Shen Qinglan before. "Have you thought about what you want to do after graduation?"
Shen Qinglan was taken aback; she hadn’t really considered it yet.
Reading her expression, Fu Hengyi gazed at her with a hint of exasperation but then abruptly remembered her martial skills. "Did Grandpa teach you those skills?"
The topic shifted quickly, and Shen Qinglan, with a faint sparkle in her eyes, nodded. "Yes, Grandpa says girls should know some self-defense."
"Grandpa’s right," Fu Hengyi agreed, shifting the conversation again. "Have you ever considered joining the military?"
The Shen Family had made a name for themselves on the battlefield. If Shen Qinglan was willing, with the Shen Family’s connections, her future would undoubtedly be smooth sailing—especially with him by her side.
Shen Qinglan shook her head firmly, "No, I won’t."
Her outright rejection surprised Fu Hengyi, prompting him to ask instinctively, "Why?"
Shen Qinglan’s gaze drifted past him towards the window, her demeanor melancholic. "Because I don’t want to."
In that moment, her aura chillingly contrasting with her earlier manner, though fleeting, Fu Hengyi was sure it wasn’t his imagination—she had a profound aversion to the military.
"You don’t like the military?" Fu Hengyi probed with an inquisitive look.
"No, it’s just too hard for me," Shen Qinglan said plainly, but Fu Hengyi sensed her evasiveness. Knowing she didn’t want to elaborate further, he chose not to press the issue.
