Chapter 60: I’m sorry for making you worry.

That day, Fu Hengyi fiercely pushed Mu Liancheng out of the way. The bullet that should have pierced into Mu Liancheng’s chest lodged itself in Fu Hengyi’s body. Although the criminals were all finally apprehended and the hostages were rescued, Fu Hengyi was still undergoing emergency treatment.
The bullet was too close to Fu Hengyi’s heart, and the local hospital simply didn’t have the capability to perform this surgery, so after stopping the bleeding, they sent Fu Hengyi overnight to the nearest hospital.
However, because precious time was wasted, even the experts could not guarantee the surgery would be successful. If the operation failed, then Fu Hengyi might...
After a group discussion, they decided to notify Fu Hengyi’s family. But the call wasn’t answered by Old Sir Fu; instead, it was a woman claiming to be Fu Hengyi’s wife, and that’s how they learned he was married.
Shen Qinglan received the call, found an excuse to leave the Fu Family residence, and hurried over. As the only grandson of the Fu Family, such an incident with Fu Hengyi would be a huge blow to Old Sir Fu; hence, to safeguard the old gentleman’s health, Shen Qinglan temporarily didn’t inform him.
She didn’t contemplate what to do if Fu Hengyi didn’t make it and Old Sir Fu couldn’t see his grandson one last time.
In Shen Qinglan’s eyes, someone like Fu Hengyi wouldn’t be easily defeated. This was her belief in him.
When Mu Liancheng and others at the hospital saw the newcomer, they were in disbelief because Shen Qinglan appeared too young. However, her first words quickly confirmed to them that she indeed was Fu Hengyi’s wife.
"How is Fu Hengyi?" Shen Qinglan asked, not even questioning who they were but instead accurately knowing their identities.
"Who are you?" Houzi asked.
"I’m Shen Qinglan, Fu Hengyi’s... wife."
"Brother Fu is still undergoing resuscitation. The doctor said the bullet is too close to the heart, and he missed the best time for rescue, so the surgery is highly risky. Brother Fu might..." Mu Liancheng spoke with a heavy voice, filled with sorrow.
"Why was he injured?" Shen Qinglan inquired.
Everyone remained silent until finally Mu Liancheng explained the situation to Shen Qinglan.
"Sister-in-law, I’m sorry," Mu Liancheng apologized once more. It was Shen Qinglan’s magnanimity not to blame him, but he felt that this apology was a debt he owed. If he hadn’t been careless and let his guard down, Fu Hengyi wouldn’t have been hurt.
"I’ve already said I won’t blame any of you. You don’t need to apologize to me again."
The corridor fell silent once more, with everyone silently staring at the door of the operating room.
Shen Qinglan leaned against the wall, her face serene, without a hint of panic, yet her slightly clenched fists betrayed her inner worry.
No one knew how long it took before the light of the operating room finally went out, and the door that had been closed for dozens of hours finally opened, with a doctor in a white coat emerging.
"Who are Fu Hengyi’s family members?"
Shen Qinglan stood up. "I am."
"The surgery was very successful, and he is out of life-threatening danger. However, the patient lost a lot of blood and is still in a coma. He will wake up in a couple of days."
With that sentence, everyone present breathed a collective sigh of relief, especially Mu Liancheng, whose eyes reddened, falling into tears on the spot after hearing the doctor’s words.
Fortunately, Fu Hengyi was okay; otherwise, he could never forgive himself for the rest of his life.
Among everyone present, Shen Qinglan was probably the calmest. From start to finish, her face showed no signs of panic or worry, causing those there to doubt if she truly was Fu Hengyi’s rightful wife.
But if someone who knew Shen Qinglan were present, they would know that she wasn’t unconcerned, but rather she just didn’t outwardly display it. She had gotten used to hiding her true emotions.
Fu Hengyi was wheeled out, and Shen Qinglan followed behind, entering the ward.
Fu Hengyi was placed in a deluxe ward, and he lay quietly on the bed, his eyes closed, his face devoid of color due to excessive blood loss.
A weak Fu Hengyi was something Shen Qinglan had never seen. She sat quietly by the bedside, watching him, seeing his steady breathing, and with the indicators on the medical equipment all normal, her heart gradually eased.
Only then did Shen Qinglan pick up her phone to call Old Sir Fu, explaining Fu Hengyi’s condition.
"Grandpa, I’m sorry for keeping this from you before," Shen Qinglan apologized. She knew she hadn’t handled this well but did not regret it.
Old Sir Fu was silent for a moment before speaking, "You’re not to blame for this, and how is Hengyi now?"
"The doctor said he’s out of danger and will wake in a couple of days. However, the bullet was too close to the heart. Although the surgery was successful, he is severely weakened and needs a period of recuperation to prevent any aftereffects."
"I understand," Old Sir Fu replied, sounding calmer than Shen Qinglan had imagined, "Once Hengyi wakes up, transfer him to Beijing. It’ll be easier for care."
"That’s what I thought too, Grandpa. Don’t worry. I’ll take good care of him."
"Good. Girl, take care of yourself too," Old Sir Fu reminded her.
Shen Qinglan looked at the group standing at the door of the ward. They seemed hesitant to enter. She spoke, "I’ve informed the family. Once he wakes, he’ll be transferred to Beijing. You all can go back for now; I’ll stay here."
Mu Liancheng gave Shen Qinglan a deep look. "Sister-in-law, I want to wait until Brother Fu wakes up before leaving."
"Me too."
"Same here," the others chimed in earnestly.
Until they saw Fu Hengyi awake with their own eyes, they couldn’t truly relax.
Shen Qinglan gave them a glance, "Do as you wish."
Fu Hengyi woke up a day later. When he opened his eyes, he saw Shen Qinglan resting with her eyes closed at the bedside. Yet, she seemed to be sleeping uneasily with her delicate brows tightly furrowed.
As Fu Hengyi was about to move, he realized his hand was clasped in Shen Qinglan’s. He paused, then a beautiful arc formed at the corner of his mouth.
Shen Qinglan suddenly opened her eyes, meeting Fu Hengyi’s gentle gaze. She was startled, then snapped to attention, "You’re awake. Are you feeling uncomfortable anywhere?"
Fu Hengyi gently shook his head. Seeing the evident dark circles under her eyes, he felt a wave of guilt, "I’m sorry for worrying you. This will never happen again."
This incident was beyond his expectations. At that moment, it was a reflexive action, and seeing Shen Qinglan now, he realized he was no longer alone. He had a wife, someone he wished to protect and cherish.
