Chapter 97: Chapter 97: He just had a tinge of regret and wanted to make amends.

Zhou Lin’s chest rose and fell as he narrowed his eyes, a hint of anger in his voice, "Do you really see me as so vile that I would harm a pregnant woman?"

"Otherwise, isn’t that exactly what you’re threatening me with to make me obey?" Cheng Zhiwei proactively opened the car door and got in, "I will obey."

She had always been obedient, but in her rage, she sometimes couldn’t control her temper and would snap at Zhou Lin.

Zhou Lin had intended to take her to Zhang Yuanheng for a check-up, and now, without the need for him to say much more, she obediently sat in the car, though a hint of anger was hidden in his heart.

When had he ever said he would do something to Cheng Zhiyin?

He drove off with a cold face.

The results of Cheng Zhiwei’s check-up by Zhang Yuanheng were the same as before; insomnia caused by too much stress. Medication was only an aid, the key was to self-regulate emotions and maintain a good mood.

When Zhou Lin heard the words "too much pressure" again, his feelings were subtly different from last time.

In his eyes, what pressure could Cheng Zhiwei have? She grew up as the cherished daughter of the Cheng Family in the first half of her life and was now the Young Madam of the Zhou Family, without a care in the world. What pressure could she have?

But now, he clearly understood that the pressure came from him.

It was as if he had an epiphany about the things she had done for him; it felt as though all of Cheng Zhiwei’s actions were no longer just her ploys and schemes.

Zhou Lin was acutely aware of the shift in his emotions and fell into a long silence because of it.

"I’ll explain to Wang Mei how to use these medications. Just take them back for her," said Zhang Yuanheng as he handed over the medicines. Cheng Zhiwei reached out to take them, but Zhou Lin was quicker, taking the medications with a not-so-friendly tone.

"Let’s go."

Cheng Zhiwei couldn’t be bothered with him and turned around to leave.

Soon after, Guo Cuihua called to ask if Cheng Zhiwei would like to come over for a meal, as she had prepared many dishes.

Cheng Zhiwei agreed immediately and asked Zhou Lin to drop her off by the roadside.

Zhou Lin turned the car around, his voice cold, "Aren’t you going to eat at Mom’s place?"

Cheng Zhiwei subconsciously frowned, "You’re coming too?"

"Can’t I come?" Zhou Lin retorted. Cheng Zhiwei’s phone volume was high and he had heard everything, including that Guo Cuihua had also invited Meng Qiancheng over for dinner.

Was Cheng Zhiwei’s strong reaction to not wanting him to go because Meng Qiancheng would be there?

Hmph, he was determined to go.

Cheng Zhiwei was speechless, looking ahead and asking coldly, "Zhou Lin, what exactly do you want to do? Yesterday, I was slapped by Bai Zhuzhu too. Do you think that wasn’t enough? Today you have to keep reminding me to obey at every moment, otherwise my friends and family will all suffer because of you."

A loud screeching of brakes filled the air, and Cheng Zhiwei’s body was flung forward by inertia, only to be yanked back by the seat belt, slamming her back into the seat.

Zhou Lin gripped the steering wheel with a formidable strength, his knuckles prominent, "Cheng Zhiwei, must you misinterpret my good intentions?"

All he had was... a slight regret and wished to make amends.

Did she really have to think he had an ulterior motive?

"Good intentions?" Cheng Zhiwei scoffed, "I cannot afford ’Young President Zhou’s’ good intentions."

As she said this, she tried to open the car door.

But Zhou Lin had locked the doors and had no intention of letting her out.

"Meng Qiancheng is not a good person." Zhou Lin almost angrily repeated what he had said before, "I just had him go through the police station, without having him actually jailed."

Cheng Zhiwei took a deep breath, pressing down the frustration in her chest. She couldn’t argue; she could not afford to offend Zhou Lin.

For a moment, the car was filled with nothing but the heavy breathing of the two people inside.

"Cheng Zhiwei, I know you don’t trust me, but you should at least trust your own throat," Zhou Lin found it rare to reason with Cheng Zhiwei in such a calm and even-tempered manner.

He was still bringing up this issue, and Cheng Zhiwei couldn’t help it, she clenched her fists tightly, "Haven’t you investigated it? It was Bai Zhuzhu who poisoned my throat and prevented it from healing, what does it have to do with Brother Qiancheng? Now, are you still trying to absolve Bai Zhuzhu of her crimes?"

"Cheng Zhiwei, be rational," Zhou Lin felt suffocated, the feeling was indescribable, it was like having a solid argument but hitting nothing but cotton, it was truly frustrating.

Cheng Zhiwei was adamant in her belief in Meng Qiancheng.

"I am being rational," Cheng Zhiwei sighed with a faint hint of tiredness, "Zhou Lin, if you want to condemn or slice me up, just say it outright, there’s no need for this pretense."

From Xu Tian to Meng Qiancheng, and then her mother, she was truly scared.

The bluish-gray smoke spread throughout the car as Zhou Lin lit a cigarette, silently watching the road ahead, "Meng Qiancheng is abroad and is my uncle’s primary physician—I don’t trust him."

Zhou Lin’s uncle, Zhou Chenyan, was a name that Cheng Zhiwei had only heard but never met in person. He was said to have mental issues and had been staying abroad for treatment.

"He’s just a doctor. Because he refused to take responsibility for Bai Zhuzhu, you are targeting him," Cheng Zhiwei said sarcastically, "Really, do whatever you want, I can’t stop you, but you don’t need to find such high-sounding excuses."

A plume of smoke which Zhou Lin inhaled coursed into his lungs, making him choke.

"Zhuzhu’s condition is unstable at the moment, she must stay outside for now," he explained briefly, "But the responsibility she should bear won’t be lessened."

"What, is she still causing a scene with her suicide attempts?" Cheng Zhiwei sneered, "She didn’t die, did she?"

Her tone was somewhat harsh and malicious.

Zhou Lin frowned, "She didn’t do it on purpose."

"It has nothing to do with me," Cheng Zhiwei countered coldly.

After finishing his cigarette, Zhou Lin restarted the car and headed in the direction of the Cheng family’s place.

When Guo Cuihua heard the doorbell ring, she opened the door cheerfully. Momentarily stunned upon seeing Zhou Lin, she quickly said, "Ah Lin is here too, come in."

Meng Qiancheng paused while arranging utensils upon seeing Zhou Lin, then went to the kitchen to fetch another set of utensils.

But the smile on his face was somewhat cold, like a plaster that couldn’t be removed.

Guo Cuihua pulled Cheng Zhiwei aside and quietly asked, "What’s going on with you two?"

Cheng Zhiwei rolled her eyes, explaining how Zhou Lin found out she was reciting scripture for him, and after a pause, she added, "Maybe it’s guilt."

Of course, Cheng Zhiwei didn’t believe Zhou Lin would soften so easily—it was likely some larger scheme was being concealed.

But there was no need to tell Guo Cuihua that.

"So, are you two planning to reconcile?" Guo Cuihua asked, remembering that Cheng Zhiwei said she still liked Zhou Lin and wasn’t willing to divorce.

Cheng Zhiwei shook her head, "No."

The four of them sat at the dining table, the atmosphere heavy.

Meng Qiancheng served Cheng Zhiwei a chicken leg, saying warmly, "You look pale, eat more."

Cheng Zhiwei nodded and began to gnaw on the chicken leg.

Zhou Lin’s face turned sour in an instance, he still remembered the time when he served Cheng Zhiwei a chicken leg—she barely took a bite before throwing up violently.

She had claimed she didn’t have an appetite. Look now, isn’t she eating heartily?
