Chapter 484: Discharged and Returning Home
Chapter 484: Chapter 484: Discharged and Returning Home
Zhiwei was awakened by Zhou Lin’s call at five in the morning when the sky lightened with the pale glow of dawn; Guo Cuihua and Cheng Zhiyin were still asleep.
She tiptoed to the corridor where the morning breeze was cool.
Zhou Lin’s voice was soft and deep, slowly transmitting from the phone, "Did I wake you?"
He was abroad on a business trip, incredibly busy, and finally found time to make a call.
"Still at the hospital?"
"Yeah." Zhiwei sighed, feeling inevitably a bit melancholic.
"I arranged for a caregiver to come, but you refused; you can’t handle staying up all night like this."
Zhou Lin originally wanted to arrange for a caregiver, but Zhiwei did not agree.
Guo Cuihua stayed by Cheng Shang’s side, doing everything herself, trying to compensate for the guilt in her heart.
She didn’t like having strangers around.
"It’s okay; my sister is here too. The three of us take turns sleeping," Zhiwei said.
At this time, her heart was actually somewhat heavy.
"Is he doing okay?" Zhou Lin asked.
"Not great. The doctor says he doesn’t want to live anymore."
The cure for a troubled heart is more heart, but Cheng Shang’s cure had died.
So he couldn’t live either.
Zhou Lin fell silent.
Only their breathing could be heard.
"I’ll come back as soon as possible," Zhou Lin instructed, "Take good care of yourself."
"Okay."
Zhiwei showed rare tenderness, "Get some rest as soon as you’re done with work."
Zhou Lin laughed, "Okay."
After hanging up, Zhiwei turned and saw Guo Cuihua.
In a short span of time, she had become even more haggard.
"Did I wake you?" Zhiwei asked.
Guo Cuihua shook her head, "Can’t sleep."
She had hardly slept all night. It wasn’t that she didn’t want to sleep, but that she couldn’t; closing her eyes brought too many things to mind.
"You have to hold on; maybe he’ll come around." Zhiwei could only offer comfort, but she knew clearly that it was just a consolation.
She felt a bit sad.
Guo Cuihua gripped her hand and whispered softly, "Actually, a person’s life isn’t very long. You encounter good things and many difficulties. If you take everything too seriously, life becomes very tiring."
She was advising Zhiwei.
"You and Zhou Lin have come this far, and he has changed a lot. If you think you can still make it work, then stay together properly," said Guo Cuihua with moist eyes.
Cheng Shang’s deeds were something she initially couldn’t accept, with every memory bringing excruciating pain.
But now that Cheng Shang was dying, she had let go again.
"Mom, I don’t know..." Zhiwei was very confused. Zhou Lin had indeed changed a lot; he became family-oriented, the ideal husband she had initially wanted.
She was, of course, happy about it.
But thinking about the past, deep down, she still found it difficult to get past that hurdle.
Waiting for Cheng Yang and Zhou Ruoki to return and get married was in reality just a buffering time Zhiwei gave herself.
She had thought it over, if she still couldn’t accept it by then, she would completely part ways.
"I know you’re scared he’ll revert to his old ways," Guo Cuihua understood her concerns. But in life, there are so many unpredictable things; no one can guarantee a trouble-free lifetime.
What’s important is that one has the ability to change.
Zhiwei now had that ability.
"Mom, Dad’s awake," Cheng Zhiyin’s anxious voice came.
Guo Cuihua and Zhiwei quickly returned.
Cheng Shang woke up, even unexpectedly found the strength to sit up, and upon seeing Guo Cuihua, weakly called out her name, "Cuihua."
He finally spoke.
Guo Cuihua hurried over, delighted, "Do you want some soup? I’ll warm it up for you."
"Okay," Cheng Shang agreed.
Overjoyed, Guo Cuihua took the insulated container and left.
Cheng Zhiyin received a call and followed out.
The ward was left with just Zhiwei. She sat down, tapping on her smartphone, without intending to speak.
She was merely keeping Cheng Shang company, in case of any emergency.
After a while, Cheng Shang called her name, "Zhiwei."
Zhiwei looked up, meeting Cheng Shang’s lifeless gaze, filled with regret.
The air fell silent for half a minute.
Cheng Shang took a weak breath, "Zhiwei, you owe Zhenzhen a life."
Again, those words.
But Zhiwei was remarkably calm, raising an eyebrow, "So what?"
She never felt that she owed Seo Zhenzhen anything.
Also, it was not her fault Zhenzhen died.
She had brought it on herself.
Cheng Shang gasped, "So you have to take care of Cuihua, you have to look after her in Zhenzhen’s stead."
Zhiwei’s normally calm mood began to surge at that point.
Anger.
Naturally, she would take care of Guo Cuihua in her old age.
Cheng Shang’s words made it seem as if Zhiwei’s kindness to Guo Cuihua was because of an obligation to Seo Zhenzhen.
"What I owe is to Mom," Zhiwei couldn’t help but retort, her tone icy, "I don’t owe you and Seo Zhenzhen."
"I am good to Mom because she has the grace of raising me, and it’s unrelated to anyone or anything else, especially you and Seo Zhenzhen."
"Zhiwei," Cheng Shang’s face turned unsightly.
Already gaunt features darkened further.
He had the look of a dying man.
Zhiwei laughed coldly, "Actually, I think you’re quite pointless. You know I’ll be good to her, yet you deliberately say such things. Do you want me to get angry and then neglect her?"
Cheng Shang’s breathing intensified.
He didn’t mean that; it was just in his subconscious, Zhiwei had always been selfish, which is why he spoke those words.
Zhiwei misinterpreted his intent.
But she had always been that kind of person.
The door to the ward opened, and Cheng Zhu Yin entered. She spoke in a gentle voice, "Zhiwei, can you check if Mom has warmed up the soup?"
Zhiwei responded with a hum and left.
As soon as the door closed, Cheng Zhiyin spoke, "Dad, why did you say that to Zhiwei?"
Cheng Shang felt uncomfortable, "I’m just worried about your mom."
"If you think Zhiwei owes Seo Zhenzhen, what about me? With the way Zhenzhen treated me, doesn’t she owe me?" Cheng Zhiyin’s tone was stern, "Being so partial to her, am I not your daughter?"
"Zhiyin, that’s not what I mean."
"Besides, she’s dead." Cheng Zhiyin snorted coldly, "You’ve done so much for a dead person, isn’t that enough? How much more do you want to torment people?"
It was the first time she spoke such harsh words to Cheng Shang.
Cheng Shang’s complexion went pale, even more unpleasant to look at.
"As for Mom, both Zhiwei and I will take good care of her, you don’t have to say anything."
Cheng Shang seemed to deflate, his entire demeanor collapsing.
"You all hate me."
"You all hate me."
Cheng Zhiyin’s eyes reddened as she turned her face away.
She felt her heart grow cold; Cheng Shang was in such a state, yet she still said such things.
But the living are equally important.
Guo Cuihua entered with the steaming soup; Cheng Shang had a few sips before insisting on being discharged to go home.
No amount of persuasion worked.
Guo Cuihua turned away crying, yet knew it was time to go home.
Ultimately, it was Cheng Zhiyin who took care of Cheng Shang’s discharge.
