Chapter 485: Chapter 485: There’s a Man in the House, Dependable

The atmosphere in the Cheng Family was very gloomy.

Cheng Shang, as if drained of the last bit of his strength by Cheng Zhiyin’s questioning, lay in bed, lapsing into unconsciousness more and more often.

And he stopped eating and drinking.

Guo Cuihua’s hair had turned half white, but she kept up her spirits to accompany him.

Cheng Zhiwei didn’t enter Cheng Shang’s room, merely helped with cooking and tidying up the house. Occasionally, when guests arrived, she pitched in with the hospitality.

After all, she and Cheng Shang were mutually antagonistic and she didn’t want to hear those nauseating things he said.

Quite a few relatives from the Cheng Family had come.

Originally, when Cheng Shang had insisted on adding Seo Zhenzhen’s name to the family genealogy and wanted to remove Cheng Zhiwei’s name, it caused quite a stir; the relatives knew something about that affair.

Seeing Cheng Zhiwei here, quite a few were secretly astonished.

Of course, there were also those who didn’t care.

The bedroom door was half open, and a relative from God-knows-where was speaking to a somewhat lucid Cheng Shang.

"When you pass away, leaving Cuihua and Zhiyin alone, there won’t be a man in the house. Who knows how others will bully them afterward."

Cheng Shang was too weak to speak.

The person continued: "Although Zhiyin can’t have children, she has a job and it’s easy for her to find someone. I have a relative, divorced last year, also has a kid. If Zhiyin marries him, she won’t have to worry about child issues."

Cheng Zhiwei, listening from outside, sneered coldly and sent a message asking Zhou Lin where he was.

Guo Cuihua’s voice rang out, "We can manage our own family affairs without the great-aunt’s concern."

The woman called great-aunt wasn’t the least bit embarrassed about being caught, but said instead, "Cuihua, you really ought to persuade Zhiyin. It won’t do to be without a man in the house."

Guo Cuihua was clearly angry, "This is our family’s matter."

The great-aunt was immediately displeased, "What’s this ’your family, our family?’ It’s all the Cheng Family. You might not like an old woman’s blunt talk, but Zhiyin’s prospects aren’t good. She should take advantage of her youth to find someone now or else no one will want her when she gets older."

The more she spoke, the more outrageous it got.

Guo Cuihua stood up, "Great-aunt, even if Zhiyin remains unmarried, we can support her for a lifetime."

"What will you do when you die later, leaving her alone? How do you expect her to live?"

"There’s also Zhiwei."

"Cheng Zhiwei, oh, I was just about to mention her. She isn’t even your own flesh and blood. Why did you call her here? She’s not planning to take part of your family’s inheritance, is she?" said the great-aunt contemptuously. "And her three children have nothing to do with the Cheng Family. Don’t get things mixed up."

"Great-aunt, Zhiwei is my daughter, always has been," Guo Cuihua said tersely. "If you keep on talking like this, please leave."

Now the great-aunt was angry, "You really don’t know what’s good for you."

She stormed out of the bedroom and glared at Cheng Zhiwei as she passed her by, looking very disdainful.

Cheng Zhiwei touched her nose and followed leisurely behind her, watching as she found Cheng Zhiyin busy in the kitchen.

It was the same monologue, the authority of an elder intact, leaving Zhiyin too angry to speak out.

She could only treat it as the irritating buzzing of a mosquito.

But the great-aunt was relentless, about to call someone over on the phone right then and there.

Cheng Zhiyin’s expression turned sour, "Great-grandaunt, please don’t make a mess here."

"I’m doing this for your own good."

How is this for her own good?

Her father wasn’t even dead yet, and these relatives one after another brought up the house’s lack of men and future oppression as if eager to shove their own unmarriageable men at her.

She fully understood what they were implying.

"Sister, let me clean up," said Cheng Zhiwei as she entered, with a dazzling smile.

Cheng Zhiyin quickly replied, "No need, you go rest."

"I’ll do it. You go answer the door, someone’s arrived."

Before she had finished speaking, the doorbell rang.

Cheng Zhiyin had to open the door.

As soon as she did, she was tightly hugged.

The great-aunt following behind Cheng Zhiyin wanted to advise further, but all her words got stuffed back in her throat as she was shocked by the scene.

Cheng Zhiwei, with a smile squinting her eyes, stood next to her, "This man is handsomer than your divorced, child-carrying man, isn’t he? He’s rich and, importantly, single."

Stung by the remark, the great-aunt felt a loss of face and said angrily, "Having a boyfriend and not saying, it’s a waste of my concern."

Then she muttered, "What normal man would want someone like her, it’s probably just for fun."

Cheng Zhiwei deliberately shouted, "Huo Xuan, if you don’t come soon, my sister is going to be a happy mother!"

She bluntly recounted the situation, her laugh deep, "Those in the know are just here to visit, and those who are not might think it’s some kind of matchmaking event today."

The comment wasn’t pleasant to hear, and several relatives exchanged guilty and embarrassed glances.

Huo Xuan said tenderly, "Sorry, I’m late."

"It’s okay," Cheng Zhiyin shook her head. She hadn’t wanted Huo Xuan to come, but at that moment, she was glad he had.

Zhou Lin pulled Cheng Zhiwei to his side and pinched her face, "You’ve lost weight."

Cheng Zhiwei stopped him from being handsy, "Have you finished your work?"

"Mm." Zhou Lin then touched her hair and discussed quietly, "I brought a few people over to help. Talk to mom about it, see if she agrees."

Earlier at the hospital, Guo Cuihua had refused their offer to hire a caretaker. Now back at home, things were in disarray, and both Cheng Zhiwei and Cheng Zhiyin were finding it tough.

That’s why Zhou Lin brought people over.

Cheng Zhiwei was about to respond when Zhou Lin added, "I’ll go talk to her. It’s a good chance to go see."

"Mm."

Zhou Lin and Huo Xuan went to see Cheng Shang.

Guo Cuihua looked at them with complex emotions, but what she felt most was relief; their presence signified her own stance.

So when Zhou Lin suggested getting help, she agreed.

On one hand, it allowed Cheng Zhiwei and Cheng Zhiyin to rest, and on the other, she wanted those scheming relatives to see that their family had men they could count on.

The men were downstairs; after Zhou Lin made a call, they came up.

Together, the three of them were in charge of the kitchen and cleaning.

Not only was the food delicious, they also thoughtfully arranged snacks and fruit for the visitors.

Everything was orderly.

No relative spoke again of finding a man for Cheng Zhiyin.

Even the tone of conversations in the house quieted down significantly.

At last, there was peace.

Cheng Shang held on for five more days and passed away in the morning.

The funeral was very low-key, attended only by Cheng Family relatives; as he had wished, his ashes were buried next to Seo Zhenzhen.

He owed this daughter a lifetime’s worth of guilt; only like this could he rest easy.

Guo Cuihua sold the house and moved to Yucheng.

Cheng Zhiyin also moved back to take better care of her.

Approaching the New Year, Cheng Yang and Zhou Ruoki came home.

The two kids, not seen for months, had grown noticeably taller, and possessed a self-discipline and sensibility not seen in their peers.

Their personalities hadn’t changed much, though. Cheng Yang was still careless, while Zhou Ruoki spoke little, but had visibly brightened up a lot.
