Chapter 391: Chapter 391: Nurturing Gratitude is Greater Than Giving Life
Zhou Lin said he was going to take a bath and really went into the bathroom to bathe.
Cheng Zhiwei didn’t remember that after their first marriage, this had always been her bedroom, and Zhou Lin hardly ever came back.
She thought this was Zhou Lin’s bedroom and so didn’t realize there was anything wrong with Zhou Lin coming here to bathe.
About five minutes later, Zhou Lin’s voice suddenly came from the bathroom: "Zhiwei?"
Cheng Zhiwei was about to take off her hearing aid when she heard him, paused, and after the sound of water stopped, asked him, "What’s up?"
"Bring me a set of pajamas," Zhou Lin’s voice was somewhat deep and also a bit strange. "I forgot to take it."
"I won’t take it," Cheng Zhiwei refused without a second thought.
The low laughter seeped through the door, muffled. "Then should I come out and get it myself?"
"As you wish."
Before the words fell, the bathroom door was opened.
Zhou Lin, with only a towel wrapped around his waist, sparkling droplets covering his body, his well-proportioned long legs, and broad chest brazenly assaulted Cheng Zhiwei’s eyes.
Cheng Zhiwei choked on her breath, coughing incessantly, her cheeks flushing with a mix of shame and annoyance, "Why aren’t you wearing any clothes?"
Zhou Lin spread his hands innocently, "I told you to bring me a set of pajamas, but you refused, so I had to come out myself."
Cheng Zhiwei: "...You did it on purpose?"
She turned her eyes away, even though they had three children, she was still unfamiliar with Zhou Lin’s body and couldn’t treat it straightforwardly and naturally.
"Hurry up and get dressed," she urged.
Zhou Lin, instead of getting dressed, walked to the bedside, leaned over with his arms braced, and touched her heated cheek with his finger, "Why is your face so red, did you catch a cold?"
He deliberately teased her.
Cheng Zhiwei’s hand hidden under the blanket clenched into a fist, her voice turned cold, "Are you done?"
Zhou Lin was far from done. His robust arm was bracing his body, pressing down increasingly closer, his nose almost touching Cheng Zhiwei’s.
Such proximity seemed to hint that the next second he would flip back the blanket and press up against her.
Cheng Zhiwei’s patience reached its limit, and she straightforwardly pushed him away.
Zhou Lin didn’t budge.
Instead, Cheng Zhiwei’s palm rested on Zhou Lin’s exposed chest skin.
Cool at first, but then it turned burning hot.
It was so hot that her fingers curled up, unsure whether to push him away or to withdraw her hand immediately.
Anger climbed up.
Her eyes shone brightly with rage, casting a brilliant light.
Zhou Lin’s Adam’s apple moved, and he couldn’t help but want to get closer.
They were legally husband and wife again, he had desires, and she had the obligation to fulfill a wife’s duties.
But if he did that, then he might never again enter this room, never lie in this bed again.
After several moments of inner conflict, Zhou Lin regained his senses, stood up, and calmly said, "I’ll go change."
After changing into pajamas, he naturally flipped back the blanket and lay down beside Cheng Zhiwei.
Cheng Zhiwei immediately said, "You’re going to sleep here?"
Zhou Lin lay flat, and said indifferently, "We’ve just remarried, if we sleep separately, what would my dad think if he found out?"
Invoking Zhou Chenyuan left Cheng Zhiwei without a response.
After all, she agreed to remarry Zhou Lin for the sake of the children.
Naturally, she shouldn’t offend Zhou Chenyuan too much.
Cheng Zhiwei decided to sleep on the edge of the bed, refusing to get close to Zhou Lin.
She was somewhat worried Zhou Lin would make a move, hence she stayed awake until late into the night, only relaxing when she was certain Zhou Lin beside her was only asleep.
She slept with trepidation.
What she didn’t know was that as soon as her breathing eased, Zhou Lin had gently moved closer, carefully wrapped an arm around her waist, and softly pressed his lips against her cheek.
Just like that, he stealthily held her.
The next morning when Cheng Zhiwei awoke, Zhou Lin was no longer in bed.
She found herself in the middle of the bed, not on the edge like last night, and was hugging a pillow.
Upon closer inspection, it seemed like someone had placed it in her arms.
But there was no evidence.
Cheng Zhiwei acted as if nothing had happened, got up, and washed up.
The three children were already up, all sitting at the dining table having breakfast, and Zhou Lin had taken care of each child.
Standing at the staircase, Cheng Zhiwei watched, not sure if it was an illusion, but a warm feeling washed over her.
Just then, her cell phone suddenly rang.
Seeing the caller ID, she was slightly stunned, then answered, "... Sister."
It was somewhat hard for her to speak.
Cheng Zhiyin’s voice came through the phone, "Zhiwei, dad wants to see you."
Cheng Zhiwei’s emotions fluctuated intensely, "See me?"
In an instant, she thought, could there be a reason to see Guo Cuihua?
"Yeah, come over now."
She agreed, "Alright."
After hanging up, Cheng Zhiwei said goodbye to Zhou Lin and left.
She went to the hospital.
Outside Guo Cuihua’s hospital room, she stood for a long time before finally gathering the courage to knock and enter.
Cheng Zhiyin was happy to see her.
Guo Cuihua had a complex expression but still nodded, "You’re here."
Cheng Zhiwei placed the flowers she brought on the table, inquiring about Guo Cuihua’s health.
"I’m not dying yet."
Her comment wasn’t directed at Cheng Zhiwei; rather, Cheng Zhiwei detected a sense of desolation.
Cheng Zhiwei’s heart was heavy.
Guo Cuihua had lost a lot of weight since she last saw her.
She opened her mouth, not knowing what to say for a moment.
Just then, Cheng Shang came in, carrying a food container, saw Cheng Zhiwei, and immediately frowned, then said, "Come out with me."
Guo Cuihua’s eyes reddened, and she said coldly, "Whatever you have to say, say it here, in front of me."
She had no affection for Cheng Shang.
Moreover, she actually cared for and wanted to protect Cheng Zhiwei deep down, knowing Cheng Shang would have nothing good to say alone with her, which is why she prevented them from leaving.
Cheng Shang felt guilty towards Guo Cuihua and spoke to her softly and gently, "I just want to talk to her about something, it’ll be quick."
Cheng Zhiwei took initiative, "I’ll go out first and come back later."
Not wanting Guo Cuihua to quarrel with Cheng Shang because of her, she voluntarily went out with Cheng Shang.
Outside the hospital room in the corridor, Cheng Shang’s face darkened, "Cheng Zhiwei, even though you’re not our own child, we still raised you, have you not even come to see her these days?"
Now he seemed concerned about Guo Cuihua.
Cheng Zhiwei’s countenance was expressionless as she calmly said, "I’ve been here, but she didn’t want to see me."
Continuing, she couldn’t help being sarcastic, "Isn’t this the outcome you wanted to see?"
She felt not a shred of guilt toward Cheng Shang.
The things of the past, she wasn’t clear about, and couldn’t decide for herself, so they weren’t her fault.
The fault was Cheng Shang’s.
Cheng Shang’s face turned red with anger: "What outcome did I want to see? No matter the grievance, the grace of upbringing is greater than the grace of birth, don’t you understand?"
"What exactly do you want to say?" Cheng Zhiwei heard the implication in Cheng Shang’s words.
He spoke so, only to pave the way for unreasonable demands that would follow.
