Chapter 128: What’s wrong with suffering a bit? Aren’t we still alive?
Chapter 128: Chapter 128: What’s wrong with suffering a bit? Aren’t we still alive?
The truth was so simple; Cheng Zhiwei lowered her eyes, silently supporting Meng Qiancheng’s arm, limping with searing pain as she walked inside.
As for how to enter their private room and get He Lanzhi to tell the truth, Meng Qiancheng said he would take care of it.
In fact, no matter what Meng Qiancheng’s arrangements were, Cheng Zhiwei didn’t need them because just as she passed around the corner, she saw Zhou Lin, He Lanzhi, and Seo Zhenzhen in the corridor.
The fifth floor of the bar, with its VIP exclusive boxes, often served as He Lanzhi’s personal space.
Like now, when the day hadn’t yet fully darkened and there weren’t many customers; the fifth floor was even emptier, rendering the whole corridor desolate.
Zhou Lin lit a cigarette; tiny sparks flickered in the soft lighting. His black trench coat made his figure appear especially tall and straight as he leaned against the wall, appearing lazy and casual.
His gaze was downcast, his thoughts a mystery.
He Lanzhi stood opposite him, a dandified young master who even stood in a slouching, disheveled way. His ostentatious, pale-pink suit was more delicate than a woman’s, peach blossom eyes carrying a hint of amusement as he idly spun his slim phone on his fingertips.
Seo Zhenzhen sat in a wheelchair, wrapped in a cream-colored coat that was soft to the touch. Her hair, which was usually cut short to the ears, had grown out significantly, softly framing her cheeks.
Love and friendship shimmered in this moment.
Cheng Zhiwei stood in a corner; their glamorous appearances only highlighted her dishevelment, leaving nowhere to hide. If you were to describe this moment, they were the clouds in the sky, while she was an ant in the mud.
She didn’t approach; she just quietly watched from the corner, while Meng Qiancheng didn’t move forward either, standing beside her, glancing at Cheng Zhiwei’s face from time to time.
It was as if he was worried, yet also observing her expression.
He Lanzhi put away her phone, frowning unhappily, "The staff here are getting more and more useless. Knowing how important today is, they should’ve cleaned up early. It’s made Zhenzhen uncomfortable."
Seo Zhenzhen’s gentle laugh was soothing as she teased, "It’s okay, Lanzhi; they didn’t know we moved the time up today. According to your usual routine, you should still be amidst luxury and beauty at this time, shouldn’t you?"
He Lanzhi’s face stiffened imperceptibly, and she shifted her stance slightly, but quickly returned to her nonchalant tone, "I certainly wasn’t; Ah Lin, you must vouch for me."
Zhou Lin extinguished his cigarette, hands in his pockets, and unlike before, he didn’t play along with He Lanzhi’s teasing but continued to maintain his silence.
This was naturally unusual.
Seo Zhenzhen asked softly, "Ah Lin, what’s wrong?"
He Lanzhi’s smile faded somewhat, but for some reason, despite his penchant for joking, he wasn’t concerned about Zhou Lin at the moment and just stared at him.
Zhou Lin looked up at He Lanzhi unhurriedly, his tone indifferent, "Give me an explanation."
The words were vague, but He Lanzhi understood. She laughed lowly, "So, you’re ready to fall out with me over her?"
Who "she" was, Seo Zhenzhen realized immediately. She glanced at He Lanzhi before asking softly, "What’s the matter? What did you do to Zhiwei?"
He Lanzhi sneered disdainfully, "Zhenzhen, you better stay out of this."
His gaze coldly fixed on Zhou Lin, "Zhenzhen has loved you for so many years and even had an accident because of your betrayal. You should’ve been taking care of her for a lifetime, but what did you do? You married Cheng Zhiwei."
Those wounds were ripped open again, bleeding afresh, sparing no one.
Cheng Zhiwei thought with irony. So, in He Lanzhi’s eyes, Zhou Lin was also one of the culprits. And to think they were close brothers who grew up in the same pants.
She wondered what Zhou Lin was feeling now.
"Lanzhi," Seo Zhenzhen spoke with utmost gravity, "we agreed not to mention those things."
He Lanzhi snorted coldly, "Not mention it? How can we not? If we don’t, he’s about to become real husband and wife with Cheng Zhiwei."
Seo Zhenzhen was silent for a few seconds, then slowly said, "That’s Ah Lin’s own business."
Upon hearing such words, He Lanzhi couldn’t believe it, "Zhenzhen, do you know that he’s giving me the cold shoulder now because of Cheng Zhiwei?"
Seo Zhenzhen gently furrowed her brows, looking up at He Lanzhi, "What about her?"
He Lanzhi glared ferociously at Zhou Lin, her tone cold and merciless, "I don’t care what you think of Cheng Zhiwei, but this time, I must make her pay for hurting Zhenzhen."
Zhou Lin said coldly, "He Lanzhi, my affairs with her are none of your business, and stop dragging innocent people into this."
"Zhou Lin."
"Call Gao Wei now and tell him it’s all over."
Cheng Zhiwei heard the name Gao Wei and immediately bit her lip; Meng Qiancheng was right, this was indeed He Lanzhi pulling the strings behind the scenes.
But was Zhou Lin planning to gloss over everything with a single sentence?
That was unacceptable.
Her fine eyelashes trembling, she took out her phone and pressed record.
"You’re feeling sorry for her?" He Lanzhi laughed like a mad person; she had undone two buttons of the shirt beneath her pale-pink suit, looking wild and unruly.
Zhou Lin glared at her with annoyance, "I’ll say it again, He Lanzhi, this is between her and me; you don’t need to intervene, especially not by involving innocent people."
"She’s also a Cheng; how is she innocent?" He Lanzhi threw her arms open and spun around, "Back then, when Zhenzhen was in that state, they still couldn’t wait to push Cheng Zhiwei off on you. Adopted ones will never compare to one’s own flesh and blood. They’re not any better. So what if she suffers a bit? She isn’t dead, is she?"
Suffer a bit? Cheng Zhiwei’s eyes reddened; how malicious must He Lanzhi be to say such things?
"Lanzhi, what exactly have you done?" Seo Zhenzhen asked sternly, frowning at He Lanzhi.
He Lanzhi pursed her lips and pushed a foot against the wall, speaking nonchalantly, "Me? I knew that Cheng Zhiwei’s brother-in-law, Gao Wei, had a bad relationship with her sister, so I gave him something and asked him to do me a favor, that’s all."
"Sister Zhiyin?" Seo Zhenzhen froze, "You hurt Sister Zhiyin?"
"He Lanzhi, this is not a negotiation with you," Zhou Lin said, enduring his temper, as he did not want to fall out with He Lanzhi just yet.
Or rather, he had never thought about falling out with He Lanzhi over Cheng Zhiwei.
Once Zhou Lin truly turned frosty, He Lanzhi couldn’t stand it and, after a moment’s standoff, reluctantly agreed through gritted teeth, "Fine, fine, fine. You all are saints; just I’m the villain, right?"
"Delete the photos," Zhou Lin added another condition.
The finger He Lanzhi had laid upon the phone screen paused, and she muttered something under her breath. Under the combined pressure of Zhou Lin and Seo Zhenzhen, she could only say, "Fine, I get it."
Cheng Zhiwei leaned against the wall, her fingernail digging into the plaster, breaking off a piece, and she asked Meng Qiancheng, "Are you sure you’ve called the police and ensured my sister is protected?"
Meng Qiancheng nodded, "Yes."
