Chapter 462: Chapter 471: A Girl’s Show-off
John Brown came back from grocery shopping, and Sarah Grandy immediately burst out laughing, while Little Grace’s face turned bright red in an instant. When the two girls were together, they naturally acted without restraint, but the topic they had just discussed involved John Brown, a grown man. So upon seeing him, Little Grace couldn’t help but blush.
John had no idea what kind of topic the two girls had been discussing earlier and asked with a smile, "What were you talking about? You both seem so happy."
"Uncle, Little Grace and I just made a bet! We..." Sarah started to exclaim excitedly but didn’t finish her sentence before Little Grace hurriedly interrupted, saying, "We were just joking around." Then, she pulled Sarah off to the side.
"Little Grace, what’s going on? Are you admitting defeat already?"
"I..." Little Grace straightened her back, initially wanting to say something defiant. However, after glancing at John, her courage vanished instantly. She pouted and said, "Fine, I admit I lost."
"Haha... then hurry up and bark like a dog." Sarah teased gleefully, shaking her head with pride.
"I’ll do it, but you can’t tell anyone about our bet!"
"Alright, I promise," Sarah replied cheerfully, though it was apparent she wasn’t being entirely sincere.
Under Sarah’s urging, Little Grace reluctantly imitated a dog’s bark three times. Her voice was so crisp that, even when mimicking a dog, it sounded lovely. John wasn’t interested in the bet between the two girls. As long as Sarah felt happy and joyful instead of sad, that was worth more than anything.
It was getting late, so John started cooking dinner, and soon, the aroma wafted out of the kitchen. Little Grace wasn’t expecting much from John’s cooking, but smelling the fragrance, she exclaimed in surprise, "Sarah, your uncle’s cooking smells amazing!"
Sarah, upon hearing this, became even more smug and said, "Of course! My uncle’s cooking skills are top-notch. Even a five-star restaurant wouldn’t compare. Once you’ve tasted it, I guarantee you’ll keep coming back here for dinner."
Little Grace pursed her lips and replied, "You’re exaggerating. If your uncle is really that good at cooking, wouldn’t he already be working as a chef at a five-star hotel? Those chefs are amazing, you know, earning thousands of dollars a month."
"Pfft, you think my uncle would settle for that? A five-star hotel is nothing special—it’s just providing service to others. My uncle cooks only for people he likes; it’s not for just anyone to enjoy."
Little Grace rolled her eyes and said sarcastically, "Oh, sure! Your uncle only cooks for you. Are you satisfied now?"
"You’ll find out soon enough about his skills when you taste the food. Just don’t blame me if you bite your tongue."
Little Grace wasn’t convinced about John’s culinary expertise. Her mother was a Smith Family Member, and her father, though not from a notable family, had achieved considerable success in politics and had significant influence in YODC City. They were used to living an upscale lifestyle, so Little Grace considered herself well versed in delicacies.
However, when John finished cooking and invited the two girls to eat, Little Grace took a few bites and—despite her reluctance to admit it—had to silently acknowledge the impressive taste. The dishes were simple home-cooked meals, but to achieve such flavor was truly remarkable.
"Sarah, are you not traveling anywhere this holiday?" Little Grace asked while eating, her words muffled by the food in her mouth.
"In a while, I’m planning a trip with my uncle. Are you thinking of coming over every day for meals? Let me tell you, my uncle is very busy; he doesn’t have time to cook for you every day," Sarah quipped.
Little Grace swallowed her food and reached her chopsticks for another big bite before responding, "I’m just worried you’ll feel lonely and thought I’d hang out with you."
"Come off it! You’re just embarrassed to admit you want free meals." Sarah laughed heartily. That her uncle could impress her friend so much made her flush with pride. "Alright, I’ll give you some face. Come hang out every day, but let me warn you—no dinner for you. By then, you’ll just be taking up space."
"Got it. I’m not as shameless as you!"
After dinner, John didn’t expect Sarah to help clean up and began tidying up the dishes himself in the kitchen. Meanwhile, Sarah and Little Grace ran off to the bedroom.
Little Grace flopped onto the bed, rubbing her rounded stomach and said, "I’m stuffed. Honestly, having an uncle like yours isn’t bad at all. I’m jealous."
Sarah also lay back, smirking in satisfaction and said, "See? My uncle’s great in so many ways. The more I’m around him, the more I like him. I’d do anything for him and be happy about it."
"Anything? Even sacrificing yourself? By the way, what do you guys wear when you sleep at night?" Little Grace turned over and grinned mischievously at Sarah. Girls their age were often curious about such things.
Sarah tilted her chin up and replied, "What do you think?"
"I think you must wear clothes. Sleeping next to a man without clothes would be so awkward."
"What’s awkward about it? You’re so naive." Sarah scoffed and continued, "Sleeping next to a man while fully clothed would actually feel weird. You don’t understand—the feeling of hugging my uncle, touching his strong body—it’s a real treat."
"You’re shameless." Little Grace rolled her eyes. She checked the door to make sure it was closed, then lowered her voice and said, "Sarah, are you seriously planning to do that with your uncle? He’s so much older than you, and you haven’t graduated from college yet. By the time you graduate, he’ll be over thirty. Can you really see yourself marrying him?"
"So what? If it’s not meant to be, it’s not meant to be. As long as being with him makes me happy now, why worry?"
Little Grace hesitated and said, "Sarah, you really need to think this through. A girl’s first time is irreversible. Your uncle may be great as a companion, but giving him everything might not be worth it."
"Pfft, what do you know? I’m the one taking advantage here. Do you know how many women adore him? CEOs, flight attendants, police officers—each one stunning. If I don’t act quickly, I’ll lose my chance."
Little Grace didn’t quite believe Sarah’s claim, thinking it was just infatuation. If she knew Sarah’s cousin, Melody Yoody, also had a relationship with John and was even carrying his child, her thoughts would certainly shift.
"Want some fruit?" John appeared at the doorway, smiling at them both.
Sarah immediately sat up and called to John, "Uncle, come here for a second."
John walked over and asked, "What’s the matter?"
Sarah knelt on the bed and suddenly wrapped her arms around John’s neck. With a playful "smack," she kissed him on the cheek and said, "Uncle, I just wanted to kiss you."
John was thoroughly embarrassed. Doing this in front of another girl made him quite uneasy, and he urged, "Don’t be silly."
Sarah didn’t let go of his neck and giggled, "Uncle, I just like you, okay? Kiss me back, or I won’t let you leave."
John felt speechless. There was no doubt Sarah was showing off in front of Little Grace. But Little Grace was Melody Yoody’s cousin. If he ever ended up with Melody Yoody, meeting Little Grace again would be downright awkward. Showing affection toward Sarah now seemed like unneeded trouble.
"Uncle, kiss me, okay?" Sarah rocked back and forth, her chest brushing against John’s as she put on a pouty face.
John couldn’t bear to see Sarah upset and gave her a quick kiss on the cheek, saying, "Alright, now go have fun with your friend."
"I knew Uncle was the best! Tonight, I’ll take good care of you." Sarah giggled, finally letting go of John’s neck. But before sitting down, she cheekily reached out a hand and touched John between his legs.
John broke into a sweat, while Little Grace stared at them in disbelief, clearly witnessing Sarah’s actions.
John knew this would definitely become a major headache later, but he had no choice. He shot Sarah a helpless look and turned to leave.
"You saw that, didn’t you? I touched him," Sarah bragged to Little Grace with a triumphant grin.
Little Grace nodded repeatedly, amazed by Sarah’s boldness. Her curiosity bubbled over, and she wondered how Sarah would feel if she really did end up doing "that" with John.
Having Little Grace around to banter kept Sarah in good spirits. Even when her thoughts occasionally drifted, Little Grace quickly found a way to engage her in conversation and distract her. John had to admit that Little Grace’s attentiveness was commendable—deliberately keeping Sarah occupied so she wouldn’t dwell on her late parents. Her knack for reading the room was exceptional, and her subtle efforts to divert Sarah’s attention were evident.
Sarah was lucky to have a friend like Little Grace. True friendships were rare, and finding someone to cherish for a lifetime was even harder.
By three o’clock, Little Grace decided to leave. Sarah escorted her out, agreeing to meet again tomorrow.
As soon as Little Grace left, Sarah’s mood quickly deflated. She and John didn’t have much to say to each other, and Sarah wasn’t as chatty and upbeat as she used to be around him.
Fortunately, Emma Campbell returned shortly afterward. Emma wasn’t particularly talkative either, but since both were girls and had John as a shared topic of conversation, they managed to find things to talk about. Sarah’s mood improved significantly.
Sarah had brought her laptop over this time, and John had also bought one for Emma. He used to have a laptop himself but rarely used it.
During times of sorrow, the evenings were often the hardest. To distract Sarah from thoughts of her parents, John suggested the three of them play computer games together.
After a while, Emma went to the living room to read, while John and Sarah continued playing until past ten, at which point they each took turns showering and prepared to rest.
