Chapter 463: Chapter 472 Sarah Grandy

Charlotte’s smile vanished instantly, her eyes quickly reddening. She spoke softly and weakly: "Uncle, do you not like me anymore?"

James Brown was startled and hurriedly said, "How could I not? Charlotte, you’re so adorable. How could I not like you?"

"But you do those kinds of things with Sister Emma, so why won’t you do them with me? You just don’t like me. I don’t even have parents now, and if you don’t want me, then I’ll have no one to love me anymore... sob..."

James Brown, after these past two days, had gotten a bit sensitive because of Charlotte. Seeing she was about to cry, he quickly said, "Don’t cry, don’t cry. How could I not love you? It’s precisely because I love you so much that I don’t want you to get hurt."

"You’re lying. You always say that. You just don’t like me anymore. You think I’m a burden, and you don’t want to care about me anymore." Charlotte wiped away her tears as she spoke.

James Brown knew that Charlotte wasn’t pretending; this girl was just too sensitive now, especially with Emma Campbell here. He was always so casual with Emma, but when it came to Charlotte, he was constantly concerned about this and that, making her feel the difference in how he treated them both.

Emma Campbell propped herself up and said, "Charlotte, don’t cry. Big Brother Brown really does like you. Otherwise, why else would he have brought you back?"

"No, it’s not that he likes me. He just thinks I’m pitiful, a girl without parents. He doesn’t actually like me at all, sob..."

Emma shot James a look and said, "How is that possible? If Big Brother Brown didn’t like you, would he be able to sleep in the same bed with you? Only the people closest to you can do that."

James Brown gave Emma a wry smile, feeling it was really hard to coax Charlotte just by talking. He hooked his left arm around and pulled Charlotte close, his hand resting right on her chest. Charlotte’s sobbing stopped instantly—this trick really worked wonders.

He gently massaged twice and said, "So now, does this mean I like you?"

Charlotte’s face turned red at once, and she nodded over and over, just like a little pecking chick.

"Charlotte, it’s not that Uncle doesn’t like you. It’s just that I’ve been with Sister Emma for a longer time, so I’m used to being casual with her. My time with you has been shorter, so things can’t be the same yet."

"Then... hurry up." Charlotte twisted her body a little, her breath growing slightly quick. Though just a young girl, she understood the ways of men and women, but had no real experience. James Brown’s true caresses on her sensitive areas brought out a powerful reaction.

"Silly girl, these things take time. If I just devoured you so fast, then it wouldn’t be as special. Let me give you an example—when you were little, did you ever beg your parents for a toy?"

Charlotte nodded, though she clearly didn’t understand why James was bringing this up.

"Think about it. If you got it easily, you’d get bored with it in a couple of days. But if you had to work really hard for it, wouldn’t you treasure it so much more?"

Charlotte thought for a while, and her expression suddenly became absent-minded again. James Brown was sweating inside. Why did it always circle back to her parents when he spoke?

"I remember my favorite toy was a Barbie doll set. Back then, my family didn’t have much money and I really wanted one, but my parents just wouldn’t buy it. I begged for days, but they wouldn’t agree. They told me that if I placed in the top five on my finals, then they’d buy it for me. But back then, my grades weren’t great, I was always around the twenties. But for that Barbie, I studied really hard every day and stopped playing outside. I just wanted to get good grades and win the doll. Finally, when the finals came, I got second place in my class, and my parents bought me that Barbie. Looking back, it wasn’t the best toy, but it was my favorite."

Charlotte paused and added, "My family was poor then, but my parents really loved each other. There was never any fighting at home. But later, when we got richer, my dad went out looking for other women, and the house was never peaceful again..."

Seeing Charlotte sink back into sadness, James Brown sighed softly and said, "Charlotte, that’s why Uncle doesn’t want to take you that quickly. Uncle has to get you like a precious treasure, so he can love you forever."

Charlotte looked up at James and forced a little smile. "Uncle, stop teasing me. Am I supposed to wait for you to chase after me, then refuse you a bunch of times before finally agreeing? By then, you’ll be long gone—I’m not that dumb."

James Brown’s face flushed red. Even at this moment, this little girl was still so sharp.

"But I do understand what Uncle means now. Things that are too easy to get just aren’t cherished. Like my mom and dad—only after they were gone did I realize how important they were to me. Before, I just wanted to get away from them, to be far from them so I’d never have to listen to them nagging and fighting. Now I wish I could hear them quarrel by my ear, wish I could hear my mom rambling behind me—how happy would that be..."

Charlotte muttered under her breath, making both James Brown and Emma Campbell’s emotions weigh even heavier.

Charlotte buried her face in James Brown’s shoulder nook and weakly said, "Uncle, you’re the closest person I have now. My parents are gone and I couldn’t stop them, but if you ever left me too, I’d really have no one left in this world. I wouldn’t even want to live anymore."
