Chapter 453: Chapter 460: Still Said It
Sarah Utah was startled by Gina Lopez’s excited reaction and took a step back, stammering, "Mr. Lopez, I..."
"You... You must have seen James. Quick, tell me, where is he now?" Gina Lopez stood up abruptly, walked quickly around the table, and tightly grabbed Sarah’s arm.
"Mr. Lopez... I... I..." Sarah was so anxious that her eyes were beginning to water. John Brown had strictly told her never to let Gina know if she saw him, but seeing how worried Gina was about James left Sarah in a very difficult position.
"Sarah, you have to tell me. What exactly is he doing? I’m really worried." Gina held Sarah’s arm, her face filled with urgency.
Sarah’s face twisted in distress as she said, "Big Brother Brown... he told me not to say anything."
"So you really did see him!" Gina almost shouted in excitement, took a deep breath, then softened her expression into a warm smile. Guiding Sarah to the sofa, she held her hand and said, "Sarah, do you honestly not want me to be with James?"
Sarah shook her head frantically. "No, no, that’s not it. I really hope Big Brother Brown is with you."
"Then that’s set. We’re currently in the middle of a quarrel, and I want to resolve it so he can come home, but he’s avoiding me. If we can’t face each other, how can we fix our problems, right? You see how worried I am; I’m not trying to pick a fight with him. I just want to confront issues together and help him. That’s what a husband and wife should do."
Hearing Gina’s heartfelt appeal, Sarah bit her lip and said hesitantly, "Last night, Big Brother... called me to bail him out."
"Bail him out? What happened?" Gina was taken aback.
"He..." Sarah couldn’t help but find the situation amusing and blushed. "He went to a bathhouse with four friends, and then the police detained them."
Gina’s face turned dark. "He went soliciting?"
"No, no, everyone there was rounded up. Big Brother just got a massage. I have a relative in the Public Security Bureau who confirmed this for me."
"Oh, oh..." Gina felt a wave of relief. With so many close female friends around him, the idea of James seeking out women was unbearable to her.
"Wait, you said he brought four people? Are they from our company?"
"No, I didn’t recognize any of them. They kept calling Big Brother their boss. He said they were his old comrades." Recalling how those four men called her "sister-in-law," Sarah’s face warmed with a sweet smile.
Gina, preoccupied with her tangled thoughts, didn’t notice Sarah’s smile. She frowned, saying, "James’s comrades? He’s never mentioned them before."
"Well, that’s what he told me. Those four seemed really strong and capable, like actual soldiers."
"That must be it. Wait, you said James went out for a sauna last night. When did he get back?"
"When I picked them up, it was already past eleven o’clock."
Gina squinted her eyes, and a smile slowly spread across her face. If James spent last night with his comrades, it meant he hadn’t been with Emily Berns. This proved that Emily’s claims were baseless. At most, James might have met with her briefly, but he certainly hadn’t stayed with her.
"Mr. Lopez... What’s going on?" Sarah was puzzled by the smile on Gina’s face and asked cautiously.
"Nothing. Thank you, Sarah. You’ve helped me a lot this time."
"Oh? I didn’t really do anything."
Gina patted Sarah on the shoulder and smiled. "You’ve untied a knot in my heart. What could be more important than that?"
Though Sarah still didn’t entirely understand, she sensed that Gina wouldn’t be angry with Big Brother anymore. Feeling a bit more relieved, she decided it was worth being scolded by James; letting Gina know had been the right call.
After Sarah left, Gina immediately called Melody Yoody to share the details. Melody, hearing the story, was equally delighted.
Gina then dialed Lucy Campbell’s number.
"Lucy, yesterday James was out with four of his comrades. I still don’t really know what James used to do in the military. Could it have been something special?"
Lucy responded quickly, "Are you sure?"
"Sarah saw him yesterday with four men. James said they were his old comrades. Typically, he doesn’t hang out with male friends here in YODC City, so they must be important, right?"
"If they’re James’s comrades, they’re probably involved in something special. James’s unit was very unique, and their work required secrecy. That’s why he’s probably unreachable for the next couple of days with his phone off."
"Oh, I see. So, could it be dangerous?"
"Haha, definitely not. You’ve seen me with so many bodyguards, but if James is around, I don’t bring any. If he can protect others, what could possibly happen to himself?"
"Then I won’t worry too much. I just wonder when he’ll finish this mission."
"It shouldn’t take too long. My guess would be about a week, no more than half a month tops." Lucy reasoned that if this were government work, it wouldn’t involve bringing his comrades into town. So, whatever James was dealing with, it wasn’t from the government. Based on James’s abilities, she estimated the task wouldn’t take more than two weeks.
After a brief pause, Lucy added, "Gina, during this time, it’s best if you don’t go looking for James. You could add to his troubles and unintentionally create unnecessary dangers."
Gina quickly agreed, "I understand. I definitely won’t look for James. Even if I see him, I’ll pretend not to recognize him."
She had learned this lesson the hard way. When James had helped Helen Wilson on a case last time, her one phone call to him had resulted in a heap of avoidable chaos and danger. Realizing that James might be on a secret mission again, she vowed not to disrupt him this time.
After hanging up, Gina found herself reflecting on her enigmatic husband. What exactly had James done in the past, and what kind of man was he? It seemed he wasn’t as ordinary as he appeared. His life was shrouded in mystery. As his wife, she had never deeply understood his true nature—it felt like a significant failure on her part.
There was something irresistibly captivating about a man with an air of mystery. Gina’s curiosity about James grew even stronger. Any lingering fear of his past had been replaced by a determination to learn more. When he came back, she resolved to ask him everything about his past—especially about those other women who had appeared in his life. She couldn’t bear to deal with another Emily Berns-type situation, much less the possibility of someone "bringing her James’s child." Just the thought was enough to give her a headache.
That evening, she didn’t pick up Emily Lopez because she arrived home late. As she opened the door, Emily, full of excitement, appeared at the entrance. However, one glance behind her sister and Emily’s cheerful expression turned into disappointment. Quietly, she turned and sat on the sofa in the living room.
Gina, now in a much better mood, walked over and sat beside her sister. "What’s with that face? Are you telling me your brother-in-law is more important to you than your own sister?"
Emily hugged her knees, pouting, and said softly, "I just feel like something’s missing when he’s not here."
Gina knocked Emily lightly on the head, laughing. "He’s my husband. Why are you acting like this?"
"Is he still your husband, though? I thought you kicked him out." Emily rolled her eyes at her sister.
"Who said he left? He’s just gone to handle some things. He’ll be back soon. Don’t worry, I’ll make sure your brother-in-law comes home."
"Really?" Emily threw her arms around Gina’s shoulders in excitement.
"Of course. Why would I lie to you? Wait... why are you so thrilled?" Gina looked at Emily curiously, sensing she might be overly excited.
Emily giggled. "I just like him, okay? I like him. If you don’t want him, I’ll make him my husband."
Gina dismissed her sister’s nonsense, pushing her away. "Oh, get out of here. You’ve got the thickest skin I’ve ever seen."
Emily laughed heartily. "Brother-in-law’s coming back! That’s amazing. Sis, you’re not mad at him anymore?"
"Of course I’m mad. I’m mad that he doesn’t tell me about his past. I only find out when things blow up. Doesn’t he consider me his wife? Shouldn’t I be mad? Shouldn’t I blame him?"
Emily nodded vigorously. "Exactly! We have to get all the details about his past. Keeping secrets from you? That’s unfaithful! I’ll help you. Oh, when is Brother-in-law coming back?"
"Within two weeks."
"That long?" Emily immediately pouted again.
"What can we do? Your brother-in-law’s off handling something important. He can’t just rush back. Behave yourself in the meantime, or no one will help you out."
"Got it." Emily giggled, her heart content knowing James wouldn’t be leaving their family. Nothing made her happier.
