Chapter 402: Chapter 409: It’s Yours

"Alright, my little madam, I’ll massage you. Your sister is busy, so stop calling her over." John Brown shot Sandra a glance and placed his hand on Sandra’s leg.

Gina Lopez had already walked out by this time. She saw John Brown’s hand resting on her younger sister’s leg and overheard what he said. Immediately, she glared at her sister and said, "Your brother-in-law works hard all day, can’t you stop bullying him?"

"Hehe, if I don’t bully him, it’s a wasted opportunity! He’s my brother-in-law, isn’t he? If he were someone else’s, I wouldn’t even have a chance."

The dynamic of a sister-in-law teasing the brother-in-law was almost a universal truth, so Sandra spoke with great confidence. Gina, feeling tenderhearted, said to John Brown, "You don’t have to pay her any attention."

John Brown truly couldn’t just ignore her in this situation, so he chuckled and said, "It’s not a big deal. Besides, I’m not exactly busy right now; I’m just sitting here watching TV. If Sandra wants a massage, I’ll give her one."

Sandra smugly added, "And I can keep an eye on my brother-in-law, make sure he doesn’t smoke. When he massages me, he never smokes. By helping him quit over time, you two can have a baby! Isn’t that a major contribution on my part?"

Gina’s eyes lit up, and she said excitedly, "That sounds great! Then let your brother-in-law give you an extra-long massage."

John Brown rolled his eyes and replied, "This is a pretty brutal way to quit smoking."

Sandra giggled and said, "Brother-in-law, just endure it. For my adorable little nephew, for my health, you must give me a proper massage."

Gina nodded repeatedly, saying, "Didn’t you just say that you need to quit smoking for our future child? Now’s the time to put in the effort."

Gina headed back to the bedroom, leaving Sandra chuckling into her hand while John Brown sulked. In what felt like a playful act of revenge, he lightly stroked Sandra’s leg.

After only two strokes, Sandra let out a sound much like a kitten, and her gaze toward John Brown instantly changed, her legs trembling slightly—she looked as if she was deeply moved.

John Brown jumped in surprise; he hadn’t expected Sandra to be so sensitive. Realizing the situation might escalate, he quickly changed his approach, no longer daring to get carried away.

"Brother-in-law, do it like you just did..." Sandra gazed at John Brown with watery eyes, her gaze filled with tender affection.

John Brown’s heart stirred; he almost followed her instructions but managed to hold himself back at the last moment, saying firmly, "Stop causing trouble."

Sandra noticed that John Brown genuinely seemed a bit upset, so she pouted and said, "Fine, do it however you want then."

John Brown kept his eyes fixed down, focusing intently, and dared not relax. The allure of Sandra, the little sister-in-law, was simply too overwhelming, and one slip-up could lead him into a dangerous and irreversible situation.

Though Sandra felt somewhat dissatisfied, seeing John Brown behaving like this, she obediently complied. Deep down, she truly adored her brother-in-law, and there was another reason she couldn’t share with anyone—a secret that made her irresistibly drawn to John Brown each time they interacted. Otherwise, as a self-respecting girl, how could she possibly act so intimately and unrestrained with any man?

"Sis, aren’t you done yet?" Before bed, the Lopez sisters were both in the bathroom, tidying up. Sandra frowned as she watched Gina change her sanitary pad, pouting.

"Almost done. I think it’ll be over by tomorrow. Why are you so concerned about this?" Gina gave her sister an odd look.

"Why does it keep happening to you? It’s so annoying." Sandra muttered under her breath.

"Why does me ’having it’ bother you? You get it too, don’t you?" Gina found Sandra’s comments unusual today.

"I’m not talking about this anymore; I’m going to bed." With that, Sandra dashed out of the bathroom, leaving Gina puzzled.

Gina hadn’t been to the factory lately. Since there wasn’t anything particularly pressing at the company today, she brought John Brown and a few colleagues to the construction site.

Before they left, Gina called Melody Yoody, who was waiting for them at the site.

Gina had always been professional and kept her work separate from personal matters. Although she knew of John Brown and Melody Yoody’s romantic history, she still laughed and talked with Melody as they discussed construction matters.

Once the work discussion was over, the customary meal followed. Besides Gina’s colleagues, there were also some local officials present, so John Brown and Melody had no private chances to talk.

After the meal, Gina and John Brown went to Melody Yoody’s office. There were some matters that didn’t need to be discussed publicly.

"Ugh..." Melody dry-heaved, interrupting their conversation.

Gina quickly said, "Mayor, if you’re not feeling well, let’s forget about today’s discussions; you should go to the hospital. We can talk another day."

Melody waved her hand dismissively, saying, "It’s okay; I’ll be fine in a bit."

"Mayor, I know you’re someone who prioritizes work above all else, but health is still the most important. You can’t go on like this. During the meal earlier, I noticed you barely ate or drank at all."

Unconsciously, Melody’s gaze drifted toward John Brown, making his heart leap with unease over a thought he didn’t want to entertain.

"Mayor, I wonder... if you might be..." John Brown thought about it, and Gina did too. However, asking this out loud would be too abrupt, leaving them both at a loss for words. Gina couldn’t help but glance at John Brown as she spoke, her heart pounding uncontrollably.

Melody took a deep breath and said, "Yes, I’m pregnant."

John Brown froze, staring blankly at Melody while Gina’s expression drastically changed. Stammering, she asked, "W-who is the father?"

Melody smiled faintly and replied, "Don’t worry; it’s not your husband."

Gina sighed in relief but quickly apologized, saying, "I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have thought that."

Melody chuckled softly and said, "It’s understandable that you’d think this way. After all, James and I had a history. Seeing each other now and still feeling lingering emotions isn’t unusual. If he weren’t your husband, perhaps I might’ve tried to pull him back to my side. But since you’re married now, I, Melody Yoody, wouldn’t go as far as to destroy your family."

Gina felt embarrassed after Melody’s straightforward statement.

"Alright, let’s move on to business." Melody shifted the conversation, clearly unwilling to dwell on this subject, and Gina found it inappropriate to probe further. Besides, she was genuinely thrilled—Melody being pregnant with someone else’s child meant she wouldn’t have further ties to John Brown.

A little after 2 PM, John Brown and Gina left the town office. Gina noticed that John Brown had remained silent, so she shot him a look and asked, "Feeling down?"

John Brown forced a smile and said, "Gina, I’m sorry. I do feel a bit uneasy."

"I understand. After all, Melody meant so much to you. Do you want to go ask her about it? Earlier, you didn’t get a chance to talk with her."

John Brown hesitated for a moment, then finally nodded, saying, "I’d like to meet with her."

"Alright!" Gina agreed readily. She appreciated that John Brown was upfront about his intentions; it was far better than sneaking off to see Melody.

"Then you drive home, and I’ll take a taxi back."

Gina agreed again without hesitation. Even as John Brown dropped her off, she wasn’t upset. This was just a small matter compared to the joy she felt about Melody being pregnant with someone else’s child.

Melody stood by her office window, her eyes red. Over the years, she had learned to be incredibly resilient. No matter how painful her heart, she refused to let her tears fall.

Her mind kept replaying the snapshots of her time with John Brown—from youthful silliness to sweet memories etched vividly in her soul. But the man who had captured her heart down to its deepest core, he was now someone else’s husband, and the father of the little life within her.

Melody was so absorbed in her thoughts that she didn’t notice someone entering her office until they wrapped their arms around her from behind. Startled, she instinctively struggled against them.

"Don’t move; you might upset the baby." A voice she couldn’t mistake for anyone else soothed her, and Melody’s body softened instantly.

But she quickly hardened her expression and said coldly, "Why did you come back?"

"I’m going to be a father, and I didn’t even know. How could I not come back to see you?" John Brown spoke in a voice full of tenderness as he embraced Melody.

"Don’t delude yourself. The child in my belly isn’t yours."

"That night we were drunk and together—how could this child not be mine?"

"Hah! Just because I was with you doesn’t mean I couldn’t have been with someone else. Any healthy man could make me pregnant, couldn’t they? It’s that simple."

John Brown gently stroked Melody’s belly and said, "Stop playing games with me. If you really had multiple partners, then how could you definitively say the child isn’t mine? At the very least, you wouldn’t be certain who the father is."

"I took a DNA test."

"The baby’s too small for that, and besides, you never took a sample of my DNA. What were you testing?"

"You... hmph! Well, it’s not yours anyway."

"Alright, alright, it’s not mine. If you say it’s not mine, then it’s not. Is that enough?"

John Brown’s indulgent tone melted Melody’s resistance once again. He had always comforted her this way during their younger days until her anger transformed into delight.

Melody turned around to face John Brown and said grimly, "You know it’s your child. What do you plan to do about it?"

John Brown’s expression froze instantly. A new, monumental dilemma loomed before him.
