Chapter 367: Chapter 374: To Quit or Not to Quit
When James Brown got home, Gina Lopez hadn’t gone to bed yet. With concern, she said, "I feel so bad for making you travel such a distance so late at night, I’m really sorry." On the way there, Gina Lopez had already called James Brown and he mentioned that it’s not easy to buy that medicine at this hour. So when James Brown arrived home late, he didn’t worry about it.
"When my wife commands, how dare I not obey?" James Brown said with a chuckle as he poured Gina Lopez a glass of water and had her take the birth control pill. There was absolutely no need to mention the danger Helen Wilson had encountered to Gina Lopez.
Having taken the pill, Gina Lopez felt a sense of relief and said, "Let’s hurry and get some sleep then."
After washing his face, James Brown went straight to bed. Gina Lopez snuggled up to him in his arms voluntarily. After being intimate for two consecutive days, Gina Lopez naturally acted less reserved in front of James Brown, becoming more open and close to him.
That night, James Brown and Gina Lopez did not do anything else but cuddle in their sleep.
James Brown killed William Power because he felt that William Power was trouble and a potential danger. He wasn’t afraid of these people, but Gina Lopez and Emily Lopez, as well as Emma Campbell, were afraid, and Helen Wilson was an easy target for them. Therefore, James Brown straightforwardly eliminated him and his henchmen.
If it were an ordinary person, killing someone would definitely cause a lot of psychological pressure, or at the very least, fear of being implicated and legally responsible.
However, James Brown felt none of this burden. During his time with Hawk Squad carrying out missions, he had killed more people than he could remember, just like when he protected Linda Campbell, single-handedly taking down dozens of enemies. So, for him, killing a few people was all too commonplace.
Even though he was now a civilian and retired from Hawk Squad, he still retained some special privileges from Hawk Squad. It’s just that he usually didn’t like to use them. Moreover, if he wanted to, he could rejoin Hawk Squad anytime he wished. Ordinary rules and frameworks simply did not apply to him.
Even though the trouble with William Power had been resolved, the sudden arrival of Christopher Taylor here still caused James Brown some concern. The man had not directly troubled him the day before, but James Brown didn’t believe Christopher Taylor was scared of him. Those from big families couldn’t easily swallow their pride; they’d learned to be patient. A person who’s learned patience, backed by a powerful family, can be very frightening and troublesome indeed.
So when James Brown got up in the morning, he first dropped Gina Lopez off at her company and then took Emily Lopez to her workplace.
"Hehe, now you’re really starting to act like a true brother-in-law to me," Emily Lopez teased James Brown with a giggle, leaning on the back of his seat after Gina Lopez got off.
James Brown laughed, "How does taking you to work make me a true brother-in-law?"
Emily Lopez twirled a lock of James Brown’s hair lightly with her finger and said, "It’s not about whether or not you take me to work. It’s that you’ve obviously started to care about me more than before. A fake brother-in-law wouldn’t bother with me."
James Brown felt both gratified and a bit awkward about Emily Lopez’s affectionate attitude and said, "Sandra, let me tell you something. Don’t go out with others recently, I’ll try to pick you up from work when I can. If I don’t have time, you should go straight home."
"Are you worried about that Christopher Taylor?" Emily Lopez’s hand playfully flicked James Brown’s head at that moment.
James Brown waved his hand, swatting away Emily Lopez’s hand, "Stop messing around, I’m serious. Christopher Taylor has indeed become more cunning. I’m not afraid of him, but it would be quite easy for him to cross you."
"Don’t worry, I’m not that easily fooled. I won’t go out with them. Besides, now that my brother-in-law is staying with my sister and me every day, I can’t wait to go home. Why would I want to run out?"
James Brown suddenly found himself feeling awkward again, not knowing how to respond. Emily Lopez’s words always seemed to have an alluring undertone. Yet, strangely, Emily Lopez fully supported his marriage with Gina Lopez and seemed very excited about it. He really didn’t know what his sister-in-law was thinking.
Luckily, they had arrived at Emily Lopez’s workplace. James Brown hurriedly said, "Alright, hurry up to work now, and remember what I said. Also, don’t run outside during the day."
"Got it, my good brother-in-law," Emily Lopez laughed, opened the car door, and ran into the building like a happy little bird.
James Brown shook his head. Turning into a true husband with Gina Lopez made him and Gina happy, but to his surprise, it was Emily Lopez, the little sister-in-law, who seemed the happiest about it. It was quite incomprehensible.
Back at the company, David Clark, the chubby guy, rushed into James Brown’s office, excitedly saying, "Manager Johnson, are we going to recruit again?"
James Brown nodded and said, "Yes, you can go check out the job market today."
David Clark blinked, "Then why don’t we hire that beauty?"
James Brown couldn’t help but smile; this chubby guy still hadn’t forgotten Lucy Campbell. He laughed, "I don’t even know how to contact her now, how can we hire her? Besides, it’s been a long time, do you know if she has found a job already?"
David Clark looked at James Brown in disbelief, "No way, there should be a record when our company recruits people. We should have her phone number."
James Brown snorted, "She came to the company for an interview in an irregular manner, so no phone number was left."
David Clark suddenly looked depressed and said, "Manager Johnson, how could you do this? She’s the goddess of my heart, how could you not even keep her number? Even if you don’t want her, you should leave something for us to dream about."
James Brown glared at him, "Are you here to work? Or to pick up girls?"
David Clark immediately shrank back, intimidated. Normally, James Brown didn’t put on airs, and he got along quite well with him, so he spoke very informally. But when James Brown really glared, David Clark couldn’t help but be afraid, and with a nervous laugh, he said, "Haven’t I always been diligent at my job?"
James Brown glared at him again, "Then go recruit people now."
Just after David Clark left, James Brown unexpectedly received a call from Lucy Campbell, which made him feel amused. If chubby David Clark knew this, he would probably be turning blue with envy.
"Miss Johnson, what made you think to call me today?"
"Why are you calling me Miss Johnson again? Didn’t we agree that you would call me Lucy?" Lucy Campbell didn’t get straight to the point but corrected James Brown on the form of address first.
"Hehe, I forgot, Lucy, you’re not busy today?"
"It’s pretty busy, but I was thinking it’s been so long since I went back. I wasn’t sure if you had run out of cigarettes. If you had, I could have someone send you some."
"This... better not for now, I’m planning to quit smoking for a while."
"Quitting smoking? Why?" Lucy Campbell was a bit surprised.
"Well... I’m planning to have kids."
"Having kids? You got married?" Lucy Campbell suddenly exclaimed in shock.
"Yeah, with Gina." James Brown didn’t hide it; after all, Lucy Campbell is the chairman of the company, and both Gina Lopez and he worked for Lucy Campbell; there was no need to conceal it.
"How did you two get married so quickly?" Lucy Campbell asked with an inexplicable tone.
"Hehe, it’s actually quite unexpected. When you come back, you can ask Gina about it. Getting married, we wanted to have a child soon, and smoking is not good for the child, so I decided to quit."
Lucy Campbell fell silent for a moment, and then laughed, "Then I really should congratulate you. Hehe, I’ll come over in a few days to celebrate properly for you two."
"You don’t have to go to all that trouble. We didn’t have any wedding ceremony, just registered our marriage."
"Oh, that’s low-key of you. I was just about to scold you for not inviting me to your wedding banquet."
"We’ll invite you when we have it in the future, but for now, let’s keep it low-key."
"Mm, okay, then I’ll hang up first, I’ll give Gina a call."
At noon, James Brown went to Gina Lopez’s office. Being newlyweds, indeed, James Brown’s mindset had changed, as he had never taken the initiative to see Gina Lopez before.
After closing the door, Gina Lopez and James Brown sat on the sofa, with Gina Lopez immediately expressing some complaints: "Why did you tell Mr. Smith about our marriage, and even that we’re planning to have children?"
James Brown took out a cigarette but then put it back, saying, "What’s there to hide about it? I feel it’s not right to keep it from her."
"It’s one thing to mention the marriage, but why did you say we’re planning to have kids? I’m not ready to have children right now."
"You don’t want to?" James Brown stared at Gina Lopez in astonishment.
Gina Lopez grabbed James Brown’s hand, apologizing, "Honey, listen to me, it’s not that I don’t like children, or that I’m afraid of pregnancy, but think about it, Mr. Smith entrusted the company to me, and it’s just starting. If I get pregnant, it’ll definitely affect my work, and when it’s time to give birth, I’ll need to take a long leave. The company can’t function without me right now."
"This...it’s not because Lucy is making this demand, right?" James Brown frowned slightly.
"Mr. Smith didn’t say that at all. She even encourages me. She said she’d rather slow down the company’s progress than affect my childbirth. She trusts me so much, how could I let her down? So I need to wait until the company is on the right track before I can have a child."
James Brown lit a cigarette, saying, "Then it looks like I don’t have to quit smoking for the time being."
Gina Lopez quickly snatched the cigarette from James Brown, saying, "Well, quitting is good too, keeps you healthy."
James Brown snatched the cigarette back, saying, "I know quitting is good for health, but if it weren’t for our child, I’m not quitting. It’s my only hobby; don’t take it away from me."
This time Gina Lopez didn’t snatch it back. After all, James Brown really didn’t have any particularly bad habits. He wasn’t that into drinking or clubbing, so she shouldn’t be too critical. Besides, she didn’t dislike the faint smell of tobacco on him now.
"Alright then, you can smoke, but I’m setting the rule: not too much per day."
"Got it. This is the premium Panda brand that Lucy brought back. Our Great Man Jones lived over ninety years smoking these."
"You always have your reasons. Look, Mr. Smith is so good to us, how could we not help her? So about having kids, you mustn’t hold any grudges."
It was just that James Brown felt quite pressured because Lucy Campbell was too good to him.
