Chapter 316: Chapter 324 James Clark’s Thoughts

James Clark has been living quite the high life these days. Previously just a minor employee at the head office, he is now the general manager of a branch company, with total assets nearing one hundred million, and two to three hundred subordinates. Everyone in the company has to act according to his mood; as soon as his face darkens, there is no one who isn’t afraid.

The original general manager, Gina Lopez, only drove a Buick, but he has now switched to a BMW X5. For such a large company, a general manager has to drive a car of this caliber to match the position.

Money, power, status—James Clark seems to have it all at once. For a man, that is indeed very impressive. This is social status, what he has always pursued, and now he finally has it in his hands.

However, James Clark’s life is somewhat bittersweet. Although everyone outwardly shows him great respect as the CEO, flattering him, behind his back they all say he climbed to this position through a woman’s connections. A few times, he even overheard his employees discussing this, their disdainful and contemptuous expressions apparent.

This is James Clark’s Achilles’ heel, a thorn in his side. While it’s true, he climbed to this position through Mary Johnson, the fact that others say it that way is something he can’t stand.

What’s making James Clark increasingly uncomfortable is his current wife, Mary Johnson. This woman is simply a shrew. At home, her word is law—she bosses him around, and she’s just the same at the company. Her temper flares up whenever she says so, not giving him, the general manager, any face at all.

People are like this: when they have not yet obtained something, they will do everything possible to get it. But once they have what they wanted, their thoughts turn to the things they’ve lost. Lately, James Clark misses Sunny Nguyen terribly. He thinks of how Sunny used to be toward him and looks at how Mary is now, making him feel more and more how good Sunny was and how unbearable a woman Mary is.

If possible, James Clark really wants to get back together with Sunny and kick the annoying Mary out of his life.

When Sunny calls asking for the household registration booklet to transfer her hukou, it evokes James Clark’s memory of how happy they were when they initially settled their hukou together, making him miss Sunny even more.

Originally, James Clark was planning to meet with Sunny alone. This way, he could have a good talk with her. He wanted to tell Sunny that their separation was a reluctant decision, meant to lay a foundation for their future. He wished for Sunny’s forgiveness. He doesn’t believe Sunny could have forgotten him by now, considering how loving they were when they were together.

He had it all planned out: he would play along with Mary for now, and once he made enough money here, he would kick her out. Then he could get back together with Sunny. For now, Sunny could be his mistress. Since they had been married, Sunny probably wouldn’t say no to him.

James Clark had his plans neatly laid out, but just after he arranged to meet with Sunny, Mary came in. He didn’t even have time to delete the call history on his phone. Mary, not trusting James Clark at all, went through his phone upon arriving and saw Sunny’s number. She immediately questioned James Clark in a rage.

James Clark had no choice but to explain that Sunny would come to transfer her hukou tomorrow. Mary still didn’t believe him, suspecting that James Clark was still entangled with Sunny. After much persuasion, Mary finally let it go.

But what surprised and delighted James Clark was that Mary didn’t say they would wait at home for Sunny the next day. Instead, she had arranged to play mahjong with some ladies. Nevertheless, she kept warning James Clark not to chat too much with Sunny the next day and to get Sunny to transfer her hukou out quickly so they could be done with it.

The next morning, after Mary left, James Clark quickly took out the household registration booklet. Then, after thinking it over, he called Sunny, telling her to meet him at the D Café, where he would be waiting for her.

At that moment, Sunny and James Brown were coming out of the office. Receiving the call, Sunny frowned slightly and said, "I don’t know what James Clark is up to, changing the location like that."

Driving the car, James Brown said, "A café, that’s quite a romantic place..."

Hearing James Brown’s tone, Sunny chuckled and said, "What, are you jealous?"

"I’m very jealous. The café is a great place for romance, not for transferring hukou."

Sunny smiled but then sighed softly and said, "I don’t know what he’s up to, but after all, he and I were husband and wife for over a year. Thinking about his change, it still hurts my heart."

James Brown patted Sunny’s hand and said, "I can understand. That shows you’re a person of feeling and loyalty. But that guy really doesn’t know how to appreciate what he had. He deserves to miss out on such happiness."

Sunny clasped James Brown’s hand and said, "It’s all in the past. He and I can’t possibly be together again."

James Brown chuckled and said, "So I’m the lucky one, huh?"

"So you do know how to take advantage of situations, at least you’ve got some conscience left."

"Of course, I’m well aware. Sunny is such a great woman, and she’s got flavor in bed, any man would be obsessed with her."

"You big pervert, that’s all you ever think about."

Sunny Nguyen teased James Brown with a twist of his arm, and a smile also appeared on her face.

The car stopped at the entrance of the café. James Brown said to Sunny Nguyen, "Since we’ve chosen this place, I suppose that Mary Johnson is not around. I won’t go in then, you should have a good talk with him."

Sunny Nguyen looked at James Brown, and after a while nodded heavily and said, "There’s nothing much to talk about. I’ll just get the household register and come out." Then she pushed the door open and got out.

In the café, James Clark was dressed in a sharp suit, with a Swiss luxury watch worth hundreds of thousands on his wrist. With a decent physique and handsome features, he indeed looked like a successful man.

Seeing Sunny Nguyen walk in, James Clark quickly stood up and gestured with his hand to her.

Sunny walked over to James Clark with confidence and ease. James Clark hurriedly pulled out a chair for her, with a polite and gentlemanly manner, saying, "Sunny, I’ve been waiting for you for quite a while."

"Thank you!" Sunny sat down with poise. The past was like smoke. Now that she was doing well, she harbored no more hate towards James Clark and felt no need to face him with a cold countenance.

After James Clark sat down, he observed the Sunny Nguyen in front of him. Her cloud-like hair neatly arranged into a bun behind her head, her extremely delicate face with a touch of light makeup, a slender neck adorned with a thin platinum chain. The gold necklace he had bought her was nowhere to be seen. Dressed in a black professional suit, Sunny exuded vigor and energy.

When James Clark was dating Sunny, he too was captivated by her beauty, but after marriage, he stopped caring about such things. What he cared about was climbing the corporate ladder and standing out. Now that he and Sunny were divorced, and he’s with Mary Johnson, who’s like a fat pig, seeing Sunny again seemed to transport him back to the days of their romance. She looked so beautiful and enchanting that even his breathing quickened.

"Sunny, you look truly beautiful today." James Clark’s gaze burned with intensity as he looked at Sunny, his face showing a raptured smile, thinking that she dressed up so beautifully especially for him.

Sunny smiled faintly and said, "Thanks for the compliment. Did you bring the household register? I took the morning off to get things done, so I want to wrap it up quickly."

James Clark instantly felt a pang of disappointment. Sunny directly mentioned the household register, as if dousing him with a bucket of cold water. However, having this rare opportunity to be together with Sunny again, he still said with a smile, "I did bring it. But there’s no rush. I just dined with a friend from the police station the other day. With me accompanying you, we won’t need to queue. It will be taken care of quickly."

Sunny sensed James Clark’s eagerness today but still promptly refused, saying, "No need, I can handle it on my own. Just hand me the household register, and I’ll give it back to you once it’s done."

At that moment, the server brought two cups of coffee to their table. James Clark quickly said, "There’s no need to hurry. This is your favorite Blue Mountain coffee; I ordered it especially for you."

Sunny glanced at the coffee and said, "I’m sorry, but I’ve changed my habits. I rarely drink coffee now."

The corners of James Clark’s mouth twitched, then he said with acute distress, "Sunny, I know you hate me. You hate that I left you for Mary Johnson, but it wasn’t what I genuinely wanted. I was forced by her."

Sunny looked at James Clark and responded, "Really? But that has nothing to do with me anymore."

James Clark reached out to grab Sunny’s hand, but she had already placed her hands under the table, causing James Clark to grasp at thin air and, with a resigned look, he retreated his hand, saying, "Sunny, it has everything to do with you. You know, as a man, it’s my responsibility to allow us to live a good life. But I’ve made no progress in my career, and Mary Johnson has been dangling that over me, pressuring me to be with her. So I thought I’d use her as a stepping stone, to help me advance in my career, and then I’d leave her and get back with you. Everything I’ve done was for our future."

James Clark’s expression became more impassioned as he spoke. His eyes even appeared red, and tears seemed on the brink of spilling. His infatuated gaze at Sunny genuinely gave the impression of deep remorse and helplessness.
