Chapter 315: Chapter 323: A Woman’s Heart
The beautiful wind chime hung in front of James Brown’s office window. As the breeze passed by, the seashells collided with each other, producing wave after wave of pleasant jingling. There was no rhythm, and many times the sounds were chaotic, but to James Brown, this was enchanting music, a love song.
James Brown was well aware that Sarah had feelings for him, but he never imagined that her affection would be so persistent, so intense. And Sarah’s love never came with demands for anything in return; she silently gave and adored him without seeking anything back.
Looking at the wind chime, Robert Brown let out a soft sigh. Sarah was not lacking in any way; in fact, she was exceptionally good. Among all the girls he knew, aside from Emma Campbell, Sarah was definitely most suited to be a wife. But now, he didn’t even dare to give Emma a sure promise, let alone drag Sarah into this too.
"Big Brother Brown, you shouldn’t overthink it. I just enjoy doing this. Doing this makes me happy."
After giving James Brown the wind chime, Sarah said this before she left his office: This adorable girl, once in love, gave her whole heart, not even expecting anything in return.
There was a knock at the door. James Brown said, "Come in," and turned around as Sunny Nguyen pushed the door open and entered. The sound of the wind chimes immediately caught her attention. She walked straight to the window and said with a chuckle, "You know, James, it’s a bit girly for a grown man to have a wind chime in his office, isn’t it?"
In front of Sunny, James Brown had always been unburdened. Shaking his head with a sigh, he said, "Sarah gave it to me, she made it herself. Those shells are quite hard. To make the holes for the threads, her hands are all covered with pricks from the needle."
Sunny looked again at the wind chime. Suddenly, it seemed to be much more extraordinary. She turned to James Brown and remarked, "That is certainly an act of affection from the girl. The gift may be light, but the sentiment behind it is deeply felt."
James Brown lit a cigarette and said, "Exactly, and that’s why I feel uneasy now. I cannot be with her, and all her tender feelings for me—if I end up hurting her..."
Sunny sat beside James Brown, smiling slightly, "You still don’t understand a girl’s heart. When a girl falls in love, she often does so without looking back. And that kind of love is a form of happiness, even if she doesn’t get anything in return. When she recalls it later in life, it becomes the most significant color in her palette. Sure, being upfront with her will save a lot of trouble, but you will shatter a girl’s fantasies and expectations about love."
James Brown looked at Sunny and said, "You’re so clear about this; can you give me a suggestion?"
"A suggestion, huh... Just go with the flow. You don’t have to actively avoid Sarah, nor do you need to express anything special. Just keep it as it was before. That way, you won’t hurt her, nor make her too sad if you end up not being together in the end. And of course, there’s another point—what if one day you end up together?"
"Your idea is as good as no idea at all, but it seems like the only thing I can do right now. Anyway, what did you want to see me for?"
Sunny glared at James Brown, "Why? Can’t I come to see you if I don’t have any particular business? Or are you afraid I’m going to cling to you?"
"How could that be? Sunny, even if you cling to me for a lifetime, I’d gladly accept it."
"Nice words. If a man’s words were always to be trusted, pigs might climb trees."
After exchanging a few jokes, Sunny suddenly fell silent. James Brown patted her hand and said, "What’s the matter? Is there something you can’t talk about with me?"
Sunny gave a forced smile, "If it were anything else, I would have eagerly sought you out. However... this is about my ex-husband."
"About your ex-husband?" James Brown looked at Sunny, waiting for her to continue.
"Here’s the thing, my ex-husband and I registered our household together when we got married, but we never separated it when we divorced. I’ve been too busy to deal with it until recently. Now that I finally have a little time, I plan to move my household registration and not have any ties with him anymore. I also want to settle in YODC City, but I can’t do the paperwork without the household registration book."
James Brown’s face broke into a smile, "Is that all? I’ll get it for you. If he doesn’t give it to us, I’ll beat him until he hands it over."
"Oh, you. One minute you look so serious, as if you’d be angry if I wanted to get back with my ex-husband. Now that you know it’s about this, you’re happy again."
James Brown’s face flushed red and he said, "I did have that kind of feeling, to be honest."
"You men, you wish I would not bother you, yet you can’t stand to see me with someone else. Typical male chauvinism."
James Brown let out a dry laugh. What Sunny said was precisely how he felt just now.
Sunny rolled her eyes at James Brown and said, "Fine, I’m not thinking of remarrying anyway, so you luck out. What I need you for is to show some presence, so that his current girlfriend won’t start nagging me again. It’s really annoying to deal with."
James Brown chuckled and said, "No problem, when do you want to go?"
"How about tomorrow? I’ve made an arrangement with him. I’ll go to his place to get the household registration book. Now he and that woman are living in YODC City, so there’s no need to go all the way to City Center."
James Clark, Sunny Nguyen’s ex-husband, and that fatso Mary Johnson have already taken over JYPP Region Company. Naturally, they would need to live in YODC City now.
Every time he thought of those two people, James Brown felt disgusted. A man who could stoop to being with such a shrew for money and power was utterly disgraceful. And that Mary Johnson, being overweight wasn’t the issue, but she had to put on airs and act all flirty like a hussy, sometimes even behaving with the coquettish gestures of a young girl; that was truly revolting.
"No problem, I’ll go with you tomorrow and make sure they give you the registration book without a fuss. And if that doesn’t satisfy you, we can destroy their company afterward and see how they cry."
Sunny Nguyen snorted with laughter and said, "Is it that serious? Now I just don’t want to have anything to do with them anymore. If we destroy their company, it would seem like I can’t get over James Clark. And you should know, JYPP Region Company was built up by Gina herself; if we were to take it down, how would Gina feel inside?"
James Brown thought about it and realized it was true; with Gina Lopez’s personality, she indeed cared deeply about the company. Destroying JYPP Region would definitely not get her approval. He chuckled softly and said, "Just talking, you and I don’t have that kind of power. To say we could destroy someone’s company like that."
"Oh really? It seems someone here is the president of that company. If he moved tens of millions to do some mischief, surely there wouldn’t be a problem."
James Brown thought to himself, even if he didn’t touch the company’s money, the amount Lucy Campbell left him was more than enough to take down JYPP Region Company. But thinking of the money, why hadn’t he thought to return it to her during the past few days they spent together? He must not let Lucy think he had pocketed the money.
But then another thought struck him. Lucy Campbell wouldn’t care about the money at all. She had said before that it was for him to use for non-company expenses if needed. Returning it to Lucy would seem like he wasn’t being a good friend.
Sunny Nguyen pushed James Brown and laughed, saying, "Hey, Mr. Big President, what are you daydreaming about? Don’t just take advantage of me. You should reward me later, maybe get me a sports car worth millions of dollars to enjoy."
James Brown laughed heartily and replied, "No problem, not just a sports car, even a plane would do."
"A plane... More like you’d be good at ’flying solo’."
"You know it too, huh? Want to help me ’fly’ one out?" James Brown wrapped his arm around Sunny Nguyen’s shoulder.
Sunny Nguyen pinched James Brown’s crotch and said, "I’m afraid I might tire you out to death. Just save your energy for now, after we get the job done tomorrow, I’ll reward you properly."
James Brown’s eyes lit up, "That’s a promise you’re making, and if you don’t satisfy me, I won’t let you off the hook."
"I could satisfy you? You beast, strong as an ox, you wear me out till I’m half dead every time."
"Haha, a man has to be strong to make a woman submit."
"Submit your big head, ghost." Sunny Nguyen gave James Brown a sultry look and then turned to leave.
After some playful banter with Sunny Nguyen, James Brown was in high spirits. The times he spent with Sunny were always his most relaxed, without any burden on his mind, just endless joy.
Perhaps that was exactly what he found so enchanting about Sunny Nguyen.
Sitting down at his desk, James Brown lit a cigarette and thought about tomorrow’s task of getting the household registration book from James Clark. Clark might still have feelings for Sunny and therefore might not trouble her too much, but that wife Mary Johnson would definitely take the opportunity to thoroughly humiliate Sunny.
This left James Brown truly baffled about a woman’s heart. She stole someone else’s husband, yet she was still relentless and spiteful toward Sunny, as if there was some deep-seated animosity between them.
James Brown really didn’t understand women. Mary Johnson’s hatred for Sunny stemmed from knowing that she couldn’t compare to Sunny in any aspect except her wealth. Even though James Clark was now her husband, she knew her place in his heart was nowhere near Sunny’s.
Which is why she wanted to humiliate Sunny, to embarrass her in front of Clark; only then could she find some consolation in her heart.
James Brown needed to prepare to prevent Sunny from facing any embarrassment, and deal with that adulterous couple decisively. Now that Sunny was his, he would not allow anyone else to bully her.
